I definitely had a black & white striped team - don't know if it was officially a Grimsby one though.

There are some available if you search google and eBay. Beware that some of the new ones are just celluloid card versions though.

I got bought a set from way back a few Christmases ago now. Black and White/Black/Red but with an inaccurate green GK strip although it is possible that was from another set. If I remember I’ll have a look what team code it was later on.

I altered a couple of mine as well. I had one who I stuck black wool to his head and called him Bo " Dread" Lox. I had another who's head I cut off and called him Ed Missing. All my players had names that were a play on words including B,A. Stard  Tommy Wat. My mates thought I was mental , which I probably was at the time. All good fun.

I am an avid collector of the 60's and 70's hand painted Subbuteo teams (called heavyweight teams). (if anyone has any to sell PM me ...quick plug)

in this range the following teams were sold as Grimsby Town

http://www.celticdream.it/largeimages/8.jpg
team reference 8 is black and white stripes with black collar/cuffs, black shorts and black socks with white tops (also Newcastle and Notts Co)

http://www.celticdream.it/largeimages/38.jpg
ref 38 is black and white stripes with black collar/cuffs, red shorts and red socks (though Town never played in this strip. Closest was early 60's when Town wore White shirts with black collar with red shorts and socks)

I have the ref 8 version but have never owned  an original  ref 38

http://www.celticdream.it/largeimages/287.jpg
ref 287 . with white socks from 1987

From the late 70's teams were machine painted (called lightweight teams)and Town appeared as the follows:

ref 366 . Between 1982 & 1986 This team featured the red collar and cuffs and white socks (based on the adidas kit of the time)

These were all listed as Grimsby Town in the catalogues.

Link to teams http://www.peter-upton.co.uk/subhw1.htm

as you can see there were other  various black and white stripe teams produced that could also have been used Town as well.

Since the 90's there have been various incarnations of Subbuteo.

Did it fulfil your Christmas wish?

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.

Cracking game. I had the floodlights version. Then I made a cardboard stadium using shoe boxes. I even  glued sheets of paper on with load of circles representing the crowd. Before anyone asks, I was a kid at the time!

Bottesford Mariner.

Grimsby Town have played in Black and White stripes with red shorts.
I believe this happened towards the end of one season, for the rest of the season probably in the late fifties prior to the white top with red shorts.
This is a fact because I was there on those occasions.

I never knew that mate. Interesting. I always thought it was one of Subbuteo's anomolies /mistakes (of which there are several back in the early days)  .

If it wasn't just for a one off game I wonder if there are any photos from that time??

would be worth updating http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Grimsby_Town/Grimsby_Town.htm

I remember my brothers set when I was very young, I'm 70, and the figures were stamped out of celluloid sheet - not the 3D figures of later years. The actually name ,Subbuteo, has a very interesting history. The guy who invented it wanted to call it The Hobby , but this name was protected by a patent. He was a keen bird watcher and the Latin name for the falcon the Hobby is Falco Subbuteo so he opted to call his new invention Subbuteo.
