Is it me or is he a lot better than we’re giving him credit for? He’s been absolutely brilliant lately, his link up play is an absolute class above this level, his skill set means we can play one striker, and he’s chipping in with a good amount of goals. As a lone striker playing up top I think he’s not far from the best we’re had since being back in the EFL.

Got to BP from work at half time so didn't see the first half.
Thought the second half was his best 45 in a Town shirt.
Great finish

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

I think he’s ideal for the way we play, really seems to have bought into it and is getting the goals now aswell, really good for the young lads developing round him aswell as he always seems to be able to do something with the ball anytime they give it to him

OP sums it up perfectly for me, his all round game is brilliant for this level. He’s got better as time has gone on and he’s got fitter - you can certainly tell he’s played most of his career a division or two above League Two.

He may not do it this season, but he’s capable of 20+ goals in a half decent side.

He’s been supurb after gaining full match sharpness, and his recent goals have given him a huge boost of confidence. He’s a real all round striker, great link up play, decent in the air, looks to be a good finisher and absolutely works his socks for the team.

Isn’t his contract up in the summer? If so we should be speaking to his agent now.

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

With the system we play now, he knows sooner or later we'll get the ball back from defence, breakaway and suddenly he's got 2/3/4 players up with him so he's not really playing a lone striker role in the route 1 sense but his awareness of where to be when we do break is invaluable and he makes goals for others as well as himself

He will be even better if we get a decent centre forward to help him, he's not ideally suited to the 1 up front role, just watch his goals for puff and you will see he likes the ball played to feet ,particularly down the side.
Don't think it took many of us too much more than 20-30 minutes of watching him to realise we had a class act

A few weeks ago my lad laid a bet with me for £20 Wes wouldn't get 10 goals this season, on current form I reckon that will be in my greasy palm pretty soon

I like Wes he's hard working has decent craft and can finish, he backs himself and has proved he can finish. Great attitude and work rate, a really good signing at this level. I also like the military salute goal celebration and all being well we'll see it a few more times yet.

He does seem to get some very unfair treatment from the officials. Now he is fully fit, he is showing his worth. On the highlights you can see how he holds the defender off for Clifton to arrive with the header for the goal.

Yeah he’s great. He doesn’t have any outstanding attributes in my opinion other than scoring goals (which is a skill in itself I guess).

We often leave a big gap between him and the midfield but you never see him moan or shirk having to make a run in to the channel or chase down a defender.

Like I said he’s just one of these centre forwards that gets goals. The way he took his today when he shaped and left the ground like he did I kind of wondered what he was doing. I was glad to eat my words though. Same as last week, in that split second I thought he should take a touch but instead he pulled off a really controlled finish back past the keeper in to the corner.

The first goal was his for the taking too, only an outrageous pull on him stopped it, as the highlights show.

Not easy leading the line on your own like he often has. He's not a huge target man but he's strong, he's no whippet but he's quick enough and his touch and hold up play is good as well. Huge part of our recent upturn.

I said on here a couple of months ago that we might have to expect him being quiet for periods of games before finding something from nothing. Today he had a battle with their centre halves which wouldn’t look out of place on either undercard of the two fight nights this evening. His two latest goals have shown his striking instinct - anticipating a rebound for his second against Swindon and getting his foot on a dropping ball and striking it low today. He’s been a brilliant signing.

He as a great ability to score goals with his back to the goal in the box. He seems to be able to turn and get a shot off in the blink of an eye. Not a bad skill to have. Any loose ball in the box near him you can put money on him to get a foot there first.

He is a very intelligent player. His off the ball movement, positioning and anticipation is of top quality. The best example of this is his goal V Tranmere. They way he anticipates the cross coming in as he drops back from the defender and moves into space leaves him prefect for the "header" into the goal.
And with his goal V Swindon, his reaction to follow up Embleton's shot to score is something we've been missing a while now.

I was saying way back when we signed him that we had made a good signing and he would get us goals. Unfortunately has wasnt match fit and also had that stupid sending off which set him back. Now he's fit and playing in a settled team structure where the players all know each other and patterns of play are being worked on where players are more settled into their roles and he knows how to play with them and vice versa.
I was disappointed he'd only signed for one year as i knew he'd be a key player by the end of the seasoon and we;d have a problem getting another Wes if he left. Hope the love we have for him will keep hhim here

This is th thing that struck me about him. Slow start but it's taken a while for the team to click but now we're seeing the benefits of his reading of the game. A latter day Gary Jones.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,

Just wish that Macca would stop kicking it up high in the air to him and hit it flatter. He can control it with his chest. He has really good close control and this would be playing to his advantage instead of high balls playing into a centre half's hands.

I love it when Thomas has the ball at his feet, he twists and turns to create space but hardly ever loses possession.

He's our best player IMHO at the moment.

Talking about the amount of abuse Wes gets, he drunk that defender off so much he had to resort to a nasty physical assault by that tosser right near the dugout.

The soft of shite ref and linesman totally ignored that and booked both him and Wes, clearly, the defender should have been sent off.

The defender was also lashing out at Thomas when Clifton bundled the ball over the line for his goal.

Thomas's CV suggested he would be fine  for L2 when he signed. Whilst not prolific he has by far the best scoring record of any of existing strikers and mainly at a higher level.

It took a while for him to find his form but you have to remember we signed him pretty late in the summer as a free agent. I think it was a couple of games after the season began. He clearly looks after himself and was maybe training over the summer but he wasnt playing matches. This put him a bit behind the others and I think his lack of sharpness early on was down to that.

Certainly over the last dozen games or so he has got better and better with each game. Yesterday he was great. Worked hard, chased down, looked sharp and his hold up play at times was a class above this level. Fully deserved his goal and would have been MOM but when your centre half scores 2 and keeps a clean sheet i suppose hard not to give it to them.

Probably got 2 good years left so i think he will not attract a div 1 club. If he keeps showing his worth im sure MJ will do his best to keep him and if we get another decent striker or one of our yyoungsters can step up we could move up this league next season. More experience for our youngsters will see them stronger and fitter and able to play in L2
