Obvs we want a prem team away but if we could draw a winnable team in round 3 then who knows we could draw a money spinner in round 4 , , , sorry I’m getting carried away!
Anyone in round 3 will do!! Expect Gillingham or flipping Walsall

I think this is our 10th time in an FA Cup draw involving the big boys since we last played a top flight team; Leeds all the way back in 98.
With 64 teams in the third round draw, there’s roughly a 1 in 3 chance of drawing a Premier League team meaning that by the law of probability we should have had three by now. We’re long overdue.
Having said that, it’s really about a handful of clubs - Bournemouth away isn’t likely to be much of a money spinner. I’d be chuffed to bits with any of the following away from home:
Manchester United Manchester City Arsenal Liverpool Spurs West Ham Newcastle Everton Chelsea
Gillingham away it is then...

Now that is a quality idea. Mariachi at Barnet, cheeky draw , put them to the sword at a rocking b.p. With a plum draw in round 4 to follow. If Carlsberg did FA cup runs.........

Man Utd away. If we beat them, we could all sing "sacked in the morning" to José.
There is no easy draw, everyone below us has had to overcome some big hurdles to get here. We aren't going to win the competition so I want the draw that benefits the bank balance the most.

My grandad had some brilliant stories and photographs of him and my grandmother at Old Trafford for the Wolves game. Neither, sadly, are still with us.

We're not going to win the FA Cup so we might as well go out with a bang at somewhere big (ideally Wembley but OT will do).

An old friend of mine who up to a couple of years was a season ticket holder in the Upper went to both semis. He often tells the story about the train journey home after the 1939 semi when our goalkeeper, George Moulson, was stretchered off. Apparently a rumour circulated that he had died after the match and as a result, the Town fans packed into the carriages, held a minutes silence as a mark of respect.

| Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong Update: I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly |

In my life time, 65 years, I have seen Town play every team except one, Man Utd. We last played them in the 46 - 47 season.
Surly law of averages means we must play them soon!

For pure financial reasons then the longer we are in the competition then the greater the financial reward will be. Therefore IMO it would be good if we can draw a team at BP who are beatable . We pocket £135,000 (?) and then get a top Premiersh*t club away.

Woking at home. Then if we win the next easiest team left at home. As a fan rather than a shareholder, I am more excited about seeing Town go on a cup run than the balance sheet.
Just like Southgate I would like an easy route to progress please! Getting beat away at Man U would be fun for a bit but would rather keep the cup running going as doesn't seem much danger of us going up or down this season so it's a bit of excitement.

If we don't get one of the big Prem clubs, an away tie at Hull or one of the Sheffield clubs would be decent wouldn't it.

Hull away be ace!
Yep, I'd love us to get Hull away. Have only played them once competitively in my life and loads of my best mates are Hull fans (grew up in Barton).

If we draw Man Utd they would be really up for the game as we have beaten them more times than they have beaten Town. With a win, Man Utd would be LEVEL with us on games won. AND we would still hold the highest attendance at Old Trafford. https://www.11v11.com/teams/manchester-united/tab/opposingTeams/opposition/Grimsby%20Town/Actually, I might have that wrong. It might be Man Utd who have beaten us one more time than we have beaten them. We will have to beat them to level the record. Even more incentive for us then.

From a football perspective, it would be great to get a 'winnable' game but failing that an away tie at a non- London (or further south) Prem club where we could take a good away crowd for a great day out and a finance boost for the January window.

In my life time, 65 years, I have seen Town play every team except one, Man Utd. We last played them in the 46 - 47 season.
Surly law of averages means we must play them soon!
Absolutely - this fixture is long overdue - if we we draw them this time - we'll probably play them twice more in the next 10 years to average it out.

With 63 potential opponents, these are the rough percentages ( not worked out on a calculator)
Championship (24 clubs): 38% (Leeds, Hull, Sheff Wed, or Sheff United)
Premiership (20 clubs): 32%
Assuming home teams with their replays:
Division 1: (13 teams): 20% (Barnsley, Rotherham or Sunderland)
Division 2: (3 teams): 5% (Lincoln, Oldham or Newport - assuming they beat Wrexham at home in the replay). NL: (3 teams): 5% (Woking, Barnet and Southport - assuming that they beat Tranmere in their replay at home).
....................
Chance of top 6 Prem team: 10%

With our luck we'll get those giants of the premiership, Bournemouth away, a long distance to travel, not much money to make, their ground only holds just under 10k, and we would lose. Just realised the draw is on at the same time as Coronation Street, have to send the missis to Tesco.

Shiite journey but we should make a few quid. We have a pretty appalling record at selhurst park.seem to remember going year after year in our championship days and getting dikked each and every time
Anyway, it's better than having to go nails worth!

Been there 3 times allows rubbish but will still be going UTM 👍
|
| In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions. Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them. GOD |

Great draw. We could have had Woking!
In 2000 we beat Palace 1-0 at their place. I think Bradley Allen scored. But two seasons later we lost 5-0 there and remember Clinton Morrison scoring a stunning header from a corner.
This time it will raise some much needed money and up the profile of the club.

You never know, they play a much weakened side thinking it's only a lower league 2 club.
We scrape a draw go back to BP and it's chosen for telly ££££

Is Shakespeare’s pub still open at Victoria ? Been there a few times when Town was heading to south London

Well they say they have 2000 away seats.... I would have thought we'd fill them?
I think it's more than that. There's a rule about some percentage of the stadium that must be made available for FA cup matches, and it's something like 15%. I doubt they'll sell out, so we could probably get a good allocation

Hull, Oxford, Forest, Town, Leeds, Oldham, Birmingham all drawn away in London. Can't see the Met policing them all at 3pm on a Saturday!
Leeds,Hull & Forest probably moved at least.

Could have been worse but still disappointing. Won't be on TV, won't be going, we'll be out and another year passes in a lifetime of not getting Man. U. (Chances running out!)

Don’t know why people are moaning, there were about 40 less glamorous ties to be had there.
Palace have a fiercely loyal home support who will probably fill the ground so we’ll get a lovely pay day as well.
Yes I’d have loved a top 10 side closer to home, but this is the next best thing.

Doubtful. Possibly 3700 (15%) or maybe more. Depends on police and safety committee etc. Premiership sides have received the above for cup ties.

You get from King's Cross to Selhurst Park via London Bridge, where there's a brilliant German bar if you like a decent beer. Well worth a visit as from memory there's not too much for away fans immediately outside Selhust:

Shiite journey but we should make a few quid. We have a pretty appalling record at selhurst park.seem to remember going year after year in our championship days and getting dikked each and every time
Anyway, it's better than having to go nails worth!
You haven't been that many times then I have seen us win at Selhurst Park :- 03/04/82 3-0 11/05/85 2-0 08/11/86 3-0 I do agree about it being a crap draw, the biggest attendance will be less than 26,000 and it's a crap hole to get to especially by car.

Gy-Kings Cross. King's Cross to Victoria. Victoria Rail Station to Selhurst Rail Station.
You can go from Kings Cross across the road to St Panceras to get a train to Selhurst via East Croydon.. No need to cross London to Victoria.

Lots of positives to take from that draw. Somewhere in the region of £150k-200k in gate receipts and our players must be absolutely buzzing. I think by fa rules they would need to give us 3800 if we request them (15% of capacity). Can see 2000-2500 going.

Crystal Palace's last home game (on Saturday) against Burnley had over 25,000 there and they had not won at home this season. So there is a very good chance it will sell out if Palace supporters are as loyal as that. And that will be about 26,000 at the game. Quite a reasonable chunk of money for Town whatever happens. And a chance of winning or drawing. Should be a great day.

I think we will sell 3,800 if that's what is on offer,
If 13,000 went to Wembley to see us play FGR,
Surely we will sell 3.800 for a weekend in London playing a prem team.
I am sure MJ will look forward to going up against an ex England manager.
Bigger shocks have happened you never know it might be our year to spring one.

Quoted from 137
Get on the train at Grimsby Town.
Get off it when it stops in London.
You will be stuck in a siding somewhere or possibly Gainsborough, there hasn't been a direct route for years.

Personally think the gate will only be between 10 and 15 thousand, the Palace fans aren't going to pay to whatch a division 2 team when the next Saturday they could be playing a Liverpool, Chelsea etc. Hopefully Hodgson rests most of his first eleven and we can then surprise them.

Palace aren’t a glam team to me . Just being honest but I’d rather have had something winnable at home
We still might yet if we beat Palace!

Last FA Cup game in London at this stage - West Ham I think?. We got the draw...and then I recall we rather upset Trevor Brooking in the replay... Circa 5k went down to West Ham for a night game after a postponement. West Ham a bigger draw but I expect us to have 3k plus following us to Selhurst. We were a bit better team in those days, the manager was a bit of a pr*ck though...

Not 1/61 The probability of getting Man Utd away was 1 out of a possible 4032 pairings. ( (64 x 64)-64) so those moaning we didn't draw them is even more ridiculous. I agree that it's a great Cup Tie and a good day down in London at one of the best atmosphere grounds in the Premier League. We shouldn't win, but you never know! We shouldn't have beaten Steve Bull's Wolves, or Middlesbrough, or West Ham either!

I'd say there will be a lot of interest in it tbh. Trains/travel on Sunday to chesterfield wouldn't have been the best. We're playing a premier league team. That there London has a lot of exiled supporters and is a good weekend away. It's the 3rd round.

Very unlikely they will sell out. They played city a couple of seasons ago and got around 14k. Loyal for premiership games but doesn't come through for the cups.

Surprised at how excited some are for this. Can’t imagine it’ll be a big crowd, won’t get the telly money, we’ll be right up against it and it’s the hardest ground in London to get to.
I’ll be going but talk of a sell out and struggling to get a ticket for the away end is bonkers. Be lucky if there’s 15k there. Hopefully we can get some sort of result.

Leeds,Hull & Forest probably moved at least.
If any, think it's the Birmingham game that is most likely get moved on police request with their history with Millwall.

Your maths is wrong. The chances of the first tie out the hat being Man Utd v Grimsby is 1/(64x63) or 1/4032. But there are 32 ties all of which produce the same outcome (combinations not permutations if my mind stretches back to school). The chances of Man Utd being drawn at home is 1/2 and We are 1 of 63 possible opponents, so I think it is 1/(2 x 63) which is 1/126.

Bit of a disappointing draw in a way. Was hoping for an 'easy' tie or a bigger money spinner. Not as bad as getting someone like Walsall though.
Still I'll be there. Subject to ticket availability.

I wasn't there, but well remember us beating Palace back in the League Cup back in 1965-6, and they were then Second Division while we in the Third - and that was in the days when the numbers genuinely meant what they said in terms of leagues. We then put four past both Bolton and Preston, who were also from the Second Division, and the atmosphere at those games was electric....and when we drew West Ham out of the hat with England captain Bobby Moore, and also Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst who would go and win the World Cup at the end of the season the town went crazy. Fairly sure there were around 16,000 there to witness us being unlucky not to gub West am, who were extremely lucky to go away with a 2-2 draw.
More of the same please.

Away at Palace reminds me of many visits to this place in the 90s and early noughties. https://www.whatpub.com/pubs/CRO/11494/cherry-tree-south-norwoodAlways used to be a good laugh in there. Mixed Town and Palace fans. Says they don't allow away fans. Ironic when it was a Palace fan who assaulted the landlady's daughter there in 2012!

It could be a lot worse couldn’t it?
My mind went back to the 70s when they came to BP with Malcolm Allison in charge. He took the team to the Kingsway and they wouldn’t serve him dinner unless he went and put a tie on! He wore his fedora at the match but I think he sat in the stand, maybe it wouldn’t fit in the dug out or maybe it was his head that was too big.
They had just come down to Div 3 and led us for much of the game before we equalised and Jim Lumby got the winner. Palace had at least one sent off and Big Mal went ballistic. I remember we had Keith Brown, another Nunsthorpe lad like Fordy, on the left wing and he might have got the other goal.
A game like that would make for a good day out.

Don't think there is much cause for complaint is there? Just getting to the third round is a rarity for us and the prize money is way more this season than it has ever been. We are already past the £100,000 mark with two wins and some TV money, plus gate receipts to add in as well. We should get north of £200,000 i would have thought, even if we go no further than the third round. Very welcome income that we didn't budget for, and a tie against a Prem side, which doesn't happen very often for us. Yeah, there are more glamorous clubs we could have drawn, but there are far worse ties we could have got.
I see Lincoln keep getting the luck of the draw. Spawny feckers.

This draw reminds me of Middlesbrough away and Marc North. Bernie Slaven had Boro ahead at half time, but A. B. had us playing great football and come back in 66 min and late winner meant that we kept in the quadrant for 20 minutes until Middlesbrough fans had dispersed. Was that Reading 4th Round (win after replay Joblin scored at some point) and Wimbledon 5th round - Alexander with a haddock parade, but a flurry of 3 goals enabled Wimbledon to progress and win the cup. Could be wrong though. Probably.

Went there when Malcolm Alison was manager, one Tuesday night. We parked up and went to the ground by rail. Still took us an hour to get back to the car!
Worst ground in London to get to, though it's well served by rail stations. Nothing much round it when you get there.

Some nice input from our friend Scotimp:
“Apparently Grimsby fans are delighted with their draw. That may be due to a few teeny misunderstandings, though. Some are drooling at the prospect of a 26,000 full house at Selhurst Park, which will make them £200,000 in a share of the gate receipts. Others are just drooling, but that is more to do with upbringing than anything else.
Should we explain to them that the last third round FA Cup tie at Selhurst was watched by just 7,149 (v Bolton in January 2017)? Or that their fourth round tie against Manchester City a few weeks later only attracted 13,979? On that basis, the arrival of mighty Grimsby in town will really bring them out.
Some of them even believe that one of the worst teams in the Football League has a chance of getting a result there. They are right about that - an 8-0 thrashing is a result of a kind. Should be fun for them.”
Mere hours after winning one of the best draws of the round, he chose to write that. Not really sure what we’re supposed to say?

twit comes to mind, how ungrateful that imp fan is. Best just to ignore such people, I think it is fantastic to see League Two teams having a go at Premshet sides tbh. We all know Grimsby fans could out-sing Everton, Lincoln and Palace fans

That would be the same side that ran rings around THEM and they got outplayed most of the match only our poor finishing saved them lol what a wankor. About time these jumped up plastics were brought back down to earth the real half of the season starts now and I honestly think they will bottle it they are not that good.

Well at the very worst, it’s gonna be better than any draw we got at home in terms of attendance. Even pulling Man Utd we still would’ve only had 8k if it sold out, so that’s positive.
If I were SLO or someone at the club, I’d be ringing around and booking coaches up this morning. It’s a ball ache to get to and if you’re looking £70, £80, £90 on the train straight after Christmas, it might put a fair few people off.
Book some coaches, £25-30 a head, sell tickets on eventbrite or at the ticket office and you’ll fill almost 10 no trouble.
It’s not difficult.

Not too bad a draw now comes the noise over the tickets thats the only down side instead of focusing on the positive of a great draw its everyone getting selfish over they might not get a ticket. If you want one you will get one , its a good draw for you lets hope they play weakened teams thats what helped us in our cup runs teams kept repeating the error till Arsenal.

You should get close to 6000 allocation if my sums are correct. Another big pay day for the Imps. You'll soon be the Man City of League 2.

I could kind of understand his obsessive warbling if he was airing it on a forum with both Town and Lincoln fans. Doing it on the Lincoln forum is just a bit cowardly though. My favourite part of that thread was him posting this without a hint of irony shortly before dismissing our chances at Palace:
"From that Everton forum:
"Lincoln City at home is an absolute gimme"
That's what Ipswich thought. That's what Burnley thought."

Couldn't care less what Lincoln think. Never have, never will.
Someone else has made the point that we were playing (and losing!) against Northern Premier League teams about 6-7 years ago.
Now we're away at Crystal Palace.
I'll take that.

John Tondeur tweets saying that Town fans should wait on booking travel in case it gets moves to the Sunday. Good advice or more to it?

Apologies if it's already been mentioned, but there are engineering works on the ECML that weekend. So bear that in mind too.

You should get close to 6000 allocation if my sums are correct. Another big pay day for the Imps. You'll soon be the Man City of League 2.
AryanImp would like that

A lincolnite I know thinks he knows ScotImp. Tragically he's not a spotty, spiteful 16 year old but a boastful man-child who is at least in his mid-fifties.
What a cesspool the Lincoln Vital forum is.
Lots of Lincoln fans avoid it like the plague.

Yeah, I know we've been here numerous times over the years. Just a shame that a decent, intelligent and football-related forum didn't evolve along with your clubs progress in the last 2-3 years.

Quicker to take the Ethel Cranswick Memorial Legiron then?

How many did we take to Wimbledon in the cup that year 5,000 ?
+ 5000 Harry Haddocks,
Should we do the same at Palace ?
Maybe not 5,000 but we can take 3 500 -3,800 and a few Haddocks

9,000 rings a bell. I know we easily outnumbered the home support.

Do they not allocate 2000 seats for away fans?

League allocation is usually around 2900. Fa cup rules states upto 15% depending on safety committee etc. Probably around 3750,possibly more. Ground very unlikely to sell out.

Palace 2-0 down at Brighton. Can't help but feel the pressure of the draw is already getting to them.

Easy formula for any such scenario Pete actual figure (round up to next 1000 ) + 100 per year for nostalgia sake 7000 + 100 x 29 = there was 9900 there that day Pete

Anyone going for the weekend already booked? I'm tempted to book the hotel Friday to Sunday to get better prices now but I know there's a small chance we'll be moved to the Monday. Anyone know when it's likely to be confirmed?

It's bound to be a distraction for them. They're only human. Probably thinking they might get a draw and have a replay at the Theatre of Breams.

Isn’t it usually Wednesday that the TV matches and therefore other kick off times are announced?
