...is getting on my nerves. Could this work?

Give the ref another card (purple, perhaps) which dismisses a player - who in his opinion is being too
vocal - but allows the manager to replace him from the subs bench.

With 7 subs but only 3 allowed the ref could get rid of 4 gobby b*ggers and still keep the match 11-a-side
and the manager with 3 subs available.

In the local Sunday league now they've introduced a new rule where players get 10 minutes in a "sin bin" for such offences.

I only got sent off twice in my career and both were for gobbing off at the ref,

One of them I did not even swear at him. :

It is getting stupid they work on a ref to get a player sent off seen it here all the time. Managers and assistants are just as bad.

What happens when all subs are used and they're still gobbing off though?

The sin bin is far from perfect but it's the best potential solution so far, though I hate the fact that we even have to contemplate these changes .

Move play forwards 10 yards. They did try it but it was dropped, I don't remember why, but it seemed a good idea when it was introduced.

Not always beneficial though Rob. I'd rather have a free kick 10 yards outside the box than right on the edge of it. More chance of getting the ball up and over the wall.

It was dropped because in order to move play forwards the dissent had to warrant a booking. The Premiershite refs bottled it as per usual, because it would have lead to sendings off.
So they quietly kicked it out the back door and gave in to the Prima donnas yet again.

If the rule is to be brought back, couldn't you give them the option of moving it forward 10 yards? So where it may hinder a set-piece opportunity, the team with the ball could choose to keep it at where the offence took place.

I accept I'm sh!te at maths but in your example 4 subbed for gobbing off and 3 subbed for tactical / injury reasons means 7 subs have been used

Why the intercourse do we have to complicate things by messing about with the beautiful game any more ?  Offside rule changes half the refs and linesmen (sorry assistant refs) don't understand, VAR, extra linesmen behind the goals, goal line technology, not having to play the ball forward at kick off, spraying lines over players boots at free kicks. Whatever next FFS

Never been the same since they replaced rope with crossbars

I am sure teams like Man. Utd practice it in training. Rooney never left the ref's side-most likely shared the same toilet at half time-always up the ref's rse

The hig teams have always done it,

When we lost to Liverpool in the FA Cup Dalglish spent more time chasing the ref than the ball.

Great idea, like in Rugby League where you get try and take the 2 or just play on with a tap.

Surely at our level the League can afford to mike the refs. Expose the buggers. The refs will come under pressure to penalise players whilst they currently bottle it.

Never mind new fangled innovations like crossbars. It went downhill when they no longer allowed players to make their mark.

What happened on Sunday Martin.

Combination of things Les....

key players missing....third choice keeper...just a couple of subs...a few injuries in the game....top of the league opposition... men v boys in reality.... before a ball was kicked i could see it happening, we effectively had beaten ourselves before we got changed and the lads were completely lifeless in the warm up.
For a young side playing their first year in mens they are doing ok for themselves and have not been phased up until last week.
Week off this week so hopefully should be back to better times next week.

Your customary perspicacity has left you Golfer. I'm referring to the Rugby Union system - broadcast what the buggers are saying, everyone will hear and the refs will have no option but to penalise them.

I thought this was covered in the current rules under " dissent ". If the refs applied the rules correctly then the problem could disappear quite quickly. I still think football could learn a lot from the officiating in Rugby Union and in particular  argueing with the ref. The 10 yard rule for disputing decisions works very well and you rarely see any disputing of referees' decisions.

Sin bin seems like a good idea for abusive players or persistently hassling the ref. Seems much less appealing to argue the toss when you could have players out the game for 5-10 minutes. Maybe also introduce fines for clubs that are persistently hassling refs as a failure to control their players. Say if in a month more than 5 different players are penalised for abuse or harassment then the club is fined. More than 3 fines in a season then points are docked.

I honestly believe that the refs are told by the various authority's to be lenient with cards, look at how in world cups bookings and sending offs are quite rare, it's all about keeping the stars on the pitch hence keeping the television companies happy. Football is a product today that must be used to screw the very last penny out of he customers.

Its very simple, if they gob off to the ref yellow card, just look at Rugby they never have any issues with it.

I don't mind Roy Keane making £60,000 a week. I was making the same when I was playing. The only difference was I was printing my own - Mickey Thomas

I don't think it is that simple. That's the situation now - but you can't say it's stopping all the needless backchat.

A yellow card is half-way to a red which imbalances the match. Referees are (I think correctly) reluctant
to do that.

The purple card idea allows referees to say "I don't need your opinion on the decisions I make, get off the
pitch...maybe your manager has got someone on the bench who can keep his thoughts to himself".

….and in Rugby Union a yellow card is a 10 minute sin bin. That could be used in football but we would need more consistent refereeing.

The laws of the game are mostly fine as they stand. The problems begin because the referees don't apply them correctly - though quite possibly because they are given guidance as to how they should apply them which doesn't stick close enough to the letter of the law.

Swear at the referee or linesman? Send them off. Vociferously argue with the officials? Yellow card.

Shirt pulling - instant yellow. If it means loads of penalties and red cards until the players stop cheating, then fair enough. Any cynical or 'professional' foul should be an instant yellow as well - you shouldn't get a chance to deliberately cheat just because it's the first time you've done it in the game.

And we know where that leads to....goalkeepers not being sent off early in the game for red card offences.
