Without doubt Belle Vue, a crumbling empty ground and we were crammed in a cage.

agree with that. Coalville treated us really well, like a mini mid winter festival with the heras fencing and outside catering and bars. always have quite fond memories of that place.
Chasetown was probably the smallest - grass banks, players warming up by the entrance on the grass behind the banks as we walked by/through them! and we managed to watch the game with a pint and thorugh the large glass windows of the pavillion/bar.was more like being at a club cricket match!
Hayes and yeading was run down but had a faded charm.loved the fact they let us out to go to the pub at half time   there was 1 or 2, then a trickle and then a flood as the good news spread amongst the town fans!
i also liked Welling,Tamworth and Ebbsfleet for their old fashioned charm - 'proper' non league grounds. and welling were very hospitable - the bar downstairs made a killing, was an awesome atmosphere and we had the treat of podge being on fire that day.

nuneaton and braintree were dreary, nothing, depressing venues

Southport. The ball would fly over the away end and land in thornbushes between the ground and a school. Cracking town to visit though

Boston United was terrible. I’ve not been since we won 6-0 there in 06/07 but the place looked like a deserted warehouse from the outside, and inside it was a mish mash of poorly deteriorated corrugated iron, steel and concrete. No character to it, just tired and looked too big for them to maintain. Weird layout as well.

Belle Vue
or
One of those London borough type teams we played our first year in non league....double barrelled name i think ...rotting concrete terrace all round....

think the gate was around 1000 and the away support was over half of it

Hayes and Yeading is the one you're thinking of perhaps?

Wasn't there one where the away end was like standing in a concrete gutter and the toilets were just a wall to urine up? I have some flashbacks of somewhere horrible and possibly one of the reasons I didn't do many away games in that season.

Sounds like Salisbury City to me. That was pretty awful

Salisbury was pretty crap, despite being fairly new. And it was in the bottom-end of nowhere miles from the city centre so had no redeeming features. Plus if was fricking cold!

Braintree was a ramshackle place with very poor away end.

In a way I'd feel a bit bad about characterising places as 'tinpot' because they are generally what you'd expect for that level. Also enjoyed going to quite a few of those places. Generally welcoming people, access to bars in the ground, some nice pubs, etc.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.
