Don't you think we need somebody a bit bigger in height-he's not even 6ft tall-to be a target man which we definitely need.

Henderson held it up well for Rochdale last night & he's not big.

Tony Rees was a bloody good target, held it up beautifully and was about 5' 10!

Don't think he was even that tall, myself. Knew how to use his body well (and, of course, we passed into feet quite well back then!).

Not sure the modern day referee would be happy with him taking a firm two-handed grip on the opponents shorts to keep them behind him which was Rees' stock in trade!

I see your point but does a target man necessarily need to be over 6ft?

For me Lenny is the best target man we've had in years and he was only 5'10 or 5'11.

In terms of target men, I was very impressed with Macclesfield's young striker Harry Smith who they've just signed from Millwall. He was huge,  easily 6'5/6'6, for a man of his size he was very mobile, held it up well, had a good touch and was technically very good. Someone like him would be perfect for us IMO! He's only 23 too so still has some growing and maturing to do.... Couod be one to keep an eye on.

The problem I have with a big 6ft5 target man is that it increases the likelyhood we will just hoof the ball up under the slightest bit of pressure.

For me, holding the ball up and bringing others into play are the most important attributes from a target man. Most headed goals are scored from set plays where you are likely to have your tallest up for anyway.

In recent years, LJL was excellent at this. He often fed the ball wide and played the ball that led to an assist. These passes are nowhere to be seen in statistics so although his assist/goal return may have been poor at times, his contribution was important.

All about movement - making space for others to run into is the key and losing the fear to attack the space - both of which have been lacking from our performances so far although Hess & Vernam tried their best last might. It needs to come from all areas though and one of our team last night didn't move at all.

LJL was a good target man but he was replaced by an even better one in Amond.

Amond wasn't big, strong or quick but he had great movement and knew how to hold the ball up.  He made himself a target for the pass rather than the traditional idea of a 6'4 target man who the ball is just lumped up towards for a flick-on.

but in Rees's case defenders had the added difficulty of having to navigate around his tash to get the ball
