Right. Just over 24 hours until permanent window closes. Who and in what position should we be realistically chasing before 5pm tomorrow.
I would like us to go back for Ali Koiki (Season long loan) and a tall mobile striker. Someone similar to Callum Dyson, the lad we had on loan from Everton.
Seems signings from abroad are off until January but was wondering what thoughts people have. Hopefully a busy day??

If we are in the unusual postion of actually having money to spend Jolley needs to get on the phone to Newport and make an offer for Podge NOW
Likes it at BP (no one else seems at all keen on it) We like him Proven goalscorer Unfinished business at GTFC as he was stupidly allowed to leave before he could play for Town in the football league Opinion is we don't want a big target man up front so how about a stocky goal sniffer

Amond started for Newport v Mansfield last Saturday so I can't see them just letting him go to a rival.
On the other hand, Joss Labadie - a striker who did very well for them before getting injured in 2017 is a free agent having left the club.

My expectations are now lowered - I'd happily take a combative, ginger-haired midfielder in the twilight of his career. Oh f*ck, Cleethorpes beat us to it.

My enthusiasm and expectations have diminished greatly,
I am not expecting us to sign any decent striker and I do not expect us to finish any higher than 14th,
That should please the club

That all depends on what the mystical (if not imaginery) six figure fee is that we are alleged to have - money talks and anyway are Newport really a rival (i thought they might finish top half)

The window doesn’t really close until 31st August. We can make loaning signing until that date. We can make a loan signing with an agreement already in place for it to be made permenent on 1st January until that date. And we can sign any player currently under contract elsewhere as long as they are released by that date.
But of course that won’t stop a couple of panic buys before 5PM tomorrow.

I would say that we are slowly working our way down the list of targets. Bowman and Angol we know we've made bids for, then any others we don't know about, so we will eventually arrive at someone who is surplus to requirements somewhere, and the deadline is approaching, so the desperate ones will be getting pushed by their agents. A signing of the Vernon variety seems possible.

I feel for MJ but then a goalscorer would’ve always been the biggest priority over the summer. I feel we’ve had a positive recruitment in the most part but then we’ve added three forwards who haven’t got a history of scoring goals (Vernam, Robles & Cook) and that leaves us with six forwards on the book, none of whom are proven goalscorers, different types of forwards but none of whom are prolific.
We attracted a better calibre of forward when we were in the Conference. Alan Connell, Liam Hearn, Andy Cook, Anthony Elding, Padraig Amond and Omar Bogle. All of them bar Connell were proven goalscorers prior to arriving at BP and largely did well. Since we’ve been back in the League we seemed to have signed and loaned a selection of forwards who maybe do everything else other than score regularly.
It’s no doubt MJ feels the need to add a goalscorer hence the Bowman and Angol bids buy I can’t help but feel this summer will be judged a success only if in the next 24 hours we are able to add a couple of decent signings to the ranks.
It would be very easy to go out and panic buy right now, and the last thing we want to do is go and spunk the Dembele money on someone who is only going to be more of what we already have. It’s ok going for a Callum Dyson type of player but you run the risk when loaning Premier League youngsters, so many go out on loan but yet so few have prolific spells.
As for Koiki? It’s gotta be dead in the water? He hasn’t been with us for 5/6 weeks, and only played against a Clee. With MJ’s Burnley and Sean Dyche connection you’d have thought if that was going to happen it would’ve been done a few weeks ago. One thing I do know though is that if MJ wants to play his 352 formation then he has to be confident that he has the players to do that ? He can’t just chuck in players like Paul Dixon and expect him to be effective when he’s both past his best and playing in a more advanced role to what he’s used too.

I merely suggested Amond on the basis that a He should never have been allowed to leave and b he's a damn sight better striker and more likely to get 15 goals this season than the dossers Jolley is likely to attract. Robles for a start, the opposition must be really shitting themselves I suggest his 'bank of knowledge' is going bust fast, deadline day approaches and I sense a couple of panic buys and money wasted (again)

Is it mass panic or is it that we've seen it all before? For whatever reason, the board of GTFC have been very quiet whilst 'The Jolley Revolution' has been used to generate ST sales - except on Saturday it seemed like nothing has changed at all other than we didn't have any squad members sat in the stands.

Bizarre ipswin as I've just been chatting to a mate from Ipswich (season ticket holder) and he said there's rumours of two of their younger lads going out on loan, namely gabenga fomali and Ben Morris are being linked with long term loans to 2 unnamed clubs to make way for a couple of permanent signings

I would now go all in whatever they have got available to get Amond, he never wanted to leave the fans didn’t want him to go, he’s a proven goal scorer in a excrement team at this level and he probably was the difference in keeping Newport up, If we were to bring him in tomorrow I’m sure he would buzzing his confidence would rocket and we’d be a shoo-in for a top half finish.
If we don’t bring anyone in of Amond’s calibre and we go down to one of the relegation favourites Macclesfield on Saturday then it’s all over as far as I’m concerned, we will be odds on to go down and rightly so, I know it’s early in the season but we have to get this right now.

I'm not sure what I'd do with the squad now it seems we'll be playing 352. Specialist wing backs would be a start although that makes a mockery of giving Fox a new deal. He was brilliant as a full back but doesn't seem trusted as a left wb. RHJ for me would be ideal on the right but he's unproven and could well be behind Clifton for that role (hopefully not - nothing against Harry).
Someone to lead the line upfront would be great but another centre forward means all but one of Cook, Cardwell, Hooper, Robles, Rose and Vernam would be reserves which is crazy seeing as four are effectively new signings.
I'd say the only certainty for me would be a central midfielder to join the attack but I haven't seen any linked so can't see it happening. IMO we're too one dimensional in the middle and Whitehouse would have been pivotal this year.

I've not heard these two might be going out (one of them I've never heard of I think he could be an anagram) but there are so many youngsters here that I suppose some will go on loan for experience. These two have played one or two games each I think under McCarthy TBH I'm not sure anyone (even Hurst) knows whats going on here at the moment. I know a number of players want out as they don't like the new regime. Hurst for his part says one minute that he's going to play a lot of youngsters and he has got a superb wealth of them to chose from, then signs Toto, Nolan and is still after Kayden Jackson Waghorn has gone so the Toto, Nolan and another one I can't remember are all covered cash wise but I think he needs a bit more if Accrington stick on their £2.5M valuation of Jackson but that will come from a couple of senior players who want out (Knudsen for example) Hopefully you don't have us in mind for either of these two. We can't afford inexperienced kids IMO

I think it's likely to have been nearer £1.75M but anyway we've had some good lads at BP in recent times haven't we, whether on loan or permanent Jackson £1 -1.75M Accy Stanley to Ipswich Nolan £1M Shrewsbury to Ipswich Toto £1M Shrewsbury to Ipswich Bogle £1M to Wigan then £750,000 to Cardiff then whatever Brum have paid Bennett to Peterboro can't remember how much other than Fattie Fry tried to do us out of the sell on then sold again to Norwich then again to Wolves Dembele to Peterboro six figure sum (allegedly) There must be others who have since changed hands for good money who I can't recall Sadly not many have changed hands with us being the selling club!

I'd assume he's exactly the same player he was (position wise) when he left, considering his lack of game time at Shrewsbury?

Really? I'd have him back in a flash. Can score and create relatively well and can play in a few positions.

I was a big fan of Sam Jones...but I guess he plays a similar role to the likes of Cook and Vernam, so perhaps not what we're crying out for?
I'd still take him, mind!

I'm with you on this one, I too thought he was a decent player, but, an out n out fox in the box??...never in a month of sundays, at the moment we need a striker in the Amond mould, someone who just has the knack of being in the right place at the right time, christ he even scored against us and didn't know where the ball was when it hit him..

Jones always claimed he was an attacking midfielder though he never got the chance to play there that I can recall. He did a decent job up front, albeit that he was very hit and miss, sulky and never looked to have great stamina. Would probably chip in with some goals but I was never really convinced about his all-round ability as a striker.
Wouldn't be unhappy if he rejoined.

What was Whitehouse brought in to do before his injury? Could Sam Jones do that job?

I was thinking the same. Surging runs from deep were always his biggest strength, so if he had the discipline, he could fit into a midfield 3.

I can't believe people are not 100% sure if they would want Jones back.
Guy was a class above when he was here, but went downhill when Slade did what he did

Good shout about Jones and the potential of playing the Whitehouse role. Get him in!

I'd have Sam Jones back without a shadow of a doubt. Big fan of his, and he visibly went downhill under Slade and Wilko.

Scored 7 in 43 last season but looks a giant of a man! If we're going back to Shrews to sign ex-players I'd have Lenny back in a shot....plays the target man role exceptionally well and will get 10-15 goals a season if played regularly.

Couple of Shrews fans saying on Twitter they'd heard this today too.
Would we be happy with Jones back in the fold? Is he a striker? We know he is a can bag a few goals!
Yes please otherwise I can see us panicing and signing some no mark with 5 goals in 100 appearances in a league 6 below ours who no one has heard of

We need new players NOW though. Obviously, they need to be the right players and not panic buying, but it'll be a big disappointment if we don't get someone even if it is Brackley's third choice striker

Was hoping of a decent signing today for a pick-me-up after the weekends debacle, but pleased weve not signed a panic buy just for the sake of it. Perhaps a loanee in the near future will atone for today, but theres still 2 hours plus to go, we never know.

Jones - in a heartbeat. A massive waste of talent when he was here. Yes we can point out how disinterested he looked in the final 4 months but we had some serious issues going on at the club, I don't think he was alone in getting disillusioned.
If he's a striker or not, I think he probably isn't. If we're signing him as an attacking midfielder or someone to drop off the front man then we've already got Vernam and Cook for that. If he's there as someone to burst through from midfield then I think that's more interesting. We didn't really get to see him in that role when he was here but he certainly has got the attributes for it.
Personally I thought his best spell was when he worked with Dyson. High intense pressing from the pair of them, often hunting in packs. Whilst Jones was working off Dyson, he was never more than 10-15 yards away from him either.
If it's no-one coming in, then so be it. I would much rather we don't bring someone in than just panic for the sake of it and bring a body in. Last season we ended up bringing in a left-back (Dixon) because we panicked when we actually had someone in the building who could do a better job (Zak Mills), albeit slightly out of place. The summer before we brought in Scott Vernon because we needed a striker and ended up just going for a body.
There will be plenty of decent players who are without a club that we can sign right up until the end of the month. As that window gets closer a lot of those will getting itchy feet and probably lower their demands to find a club, by not signing someone for the sake of it now we'll be in a better position to pick one of these up.
Equally so the loan market is open until the end of the month. Loads of deals will go through today as clubs get their squads set in stone. As that happens it'll push players further down the pecking order and they'll then become available for loan to clubs like us.
I would much rather we go another couple of games with what we've got, then are able to strengthen with some free agents and/or loan signings than panic and sign a player or two just for the sake of it.

Well, 20 mins to go, so it's looking like loanees and waiting until the next window. Meanwhile, Angol is about to sign for Shrewsbury. You can't blame him, but it does rankle a bit that we can't compete with them any more.

M. Jolly meeting train at Grimsby Station due in 1658 with new striker on board. ex Premiership player who is a one man goal machine. J.S.F. has broke the bank this time but the benign loan remains the same. Everything agreed just pen to paper for our number one striker on number one platform.

P*ss poor from us that we haven’t managed to sign a goalscorer we’ve had all pre-season and money from the dembele sale to get one in clearly after last season it was the biggest area we needed to improve on yet here we go again with another freebie or Loan player lots of town fans unhappy with this including myself I hope the players we have got up front can prove me wrong but i doubt it Very much, nothing to do with the forest green game I can except that and we move on but we needed a goalscorer at the club as simple as that,as always I will still be there Saturday supporting the team and hopefully we can get a result UTM 😔

But no one wants to come, even out of contract and released players would rather be unemployed than come to Grimsby town, our reputation precedes us I'm afraid

Not surprised by us not rushing into buying a player for the sake of it. Looks like the loan market it is and maybe wait until January.

Feeling of deja vu ,Hurst and Slade failed to start the season with recognised goal scorer, really though Jolley would get someone in,very disappointed.
You’re talking absolute shite. Last Hurst season we had Bogle and Jackson.

How the feck have Lincoln managed to lose their captain and replace him with Shackell all within 48 hours yet we can’t sign a striker in 2 months.

Money
Yeah I guess money is part of it. We must remain patient and trust MJ continues with his BP project in the right direction. Going to be backward steps but as long as we move forwards then that’s all we can ask for. No quick fixes anymore please, let’s build for the future. He’s a breath of fresh air and will only bring in players that’s right for the club.

Some great logic in this thread and on Twitter today. “Sign anyone, I don’t care who, just sign someone and chuck some money down the drain”
It’s quite refreshing MJ isn’t prepared to just punt for someone because the windows closing - we all know that’s worked out brilliantly for us in the past........ If we have a few quid to spend (which reports suggest) it makes sense to not waste it and potentially wait until January to get the right player.
In the meantime I have great faith we will get a couple of decent players in on loan over the next few weeks.
Some of us just need to calm down a little, take a step back and take a look at things.

But we do have squad devoid of goals. It was clear before the season started and the fgr game should’ve hammered it home.

God sake , what is it with the lord saviours of michael jolley all ready to immediately jump on anyone who dare says they are dissapointed that we didnt bring at least a couple of decent permanent signings in today ?
We have an unbalanced squad right now without the players needed to play michaels preferred formation of 352 , it showed saturday by playing clifton and dixon as wing backs and cook as a striker.
Just because some are dissapointed doesnt mean they are having a go , im sure he has tried but its natural to be left feeling a bit underwhelmed.
Im sick to death of anyone who likes to stick there neck out to have a pop at anyone who says they are a bit dissapointed in this transfer window , that man has the same right to an opinion as you and your not anymore of a town fan by making out they are all doom and gloom .
So wind your neck in accept some disagree and have a nice evening.

But surely we cannot ignore Hoopers hat trick from the last game of last season....I do believe he has goals in him, just needs to be played in the correct position...and that's definitely not straight down the middle!!.. All that said I do agree and have said before, countless rimes, to me it should've be been the number 1 priority that as soon as the last ball was kicked we got an out n out striker in through the door...

I'm frustrated we couldn't take 1 or 2 additions but I would have only wanted signings that Jolley thought would wouod improve us... The point you make is a fantastic one. Clearly Jolley had identified Bowman and Angol as players he thought could fit into how he wanted us to play, we couldn't get those deals over the line (as others we probably missed out on that we don't know about) and MJ/AL have decided to refrain from signing players just to add bodies to the squad and either utilise the loan market or wait until January. A very sensible and refreshing approach! Any signing is a risk but even more so with players the management team aren't 100% confident with. If the players that they think will strengthen us and make us better aren't available yet then we should absolutely save that bit of the budget until they/others of equal quality are and go with what we've got until then. As many have said before, what MJ managed to get out of THAT squad of players in the last 10 games of last season was nothing short of miraculous and I have every faith that 5-10 games into the season we'll see a very different Town to what we witnessed on Saturday. It may take a few game for players to gain confidence in their positions, the system, understand exactly what is expected of them... Pre season friendlies just cannot give you that and are nothing more that fitness exercises. History is littered with teams that start the season terribly and go into have successful campaigns. Anybody remember the Norwich side that lost their first game in L1 in 2009 7-1 to Colchester, didn't win until their 4th game and only win 2 in their first 10, they followed that up with winning the league comfortably with a club record 95 points! More recently on the flip slide, the season we got promoted, Forest Green won their first 9 games and yet were still not promoted. League very rarely start to take shape ungil 12-15 games in In Jolley I trust! #UTM

Well in Jolley I sort of trust - got to say that I look at our squad and wonder how we are going to win many games before January unless he pulls a few rabbits out of the hat in terms of free agents & loans. We have no proven goalscorer, no proper wing-backs/wingers (excluding Max Wright, who has proven himself at 4 levels lower) and no cover for John Welsh. We've got a plethora of strikers but, with the possible exception of Hooper, none really pose a real threat in the opposition box. Up to pre-season, I thought our recruitment looked OK but since then it has been seriously underwhelming.

Need to do well in the loan market now. Disappointing end to a disappointing window.
I know people are saying it’s not a big deal to not sign anyone, but they’ve obviously been flat out trying to sign people and have fell short. We need some good loan players.

I'm just glad that someone has come in and not signed a shedload of players who are all much of a muchness. We've had some massive squads in the past few years, well into the 30's numbers wise, and most of them just sit in the stands draining the budget. This time, the squad needs to be built slowly and methodically, only signing players that are a clear improvement on what we have. We are clearly trying to entice a goalscorer, judging on the two bids we know of. Just have to keep plugging away until the right one/s come along and want to sign.

Seems to be people judging the whole transfer window in what's happened (or not) today. Just because we haven't signed a striker today doesn't mean we haven't signed one.
We've signed a few actually. And going off one game I personally don't know how many any of them are capable of scoring in a season.
How many teams actually have a 20-goal striker anyway? Maybe 3/4 in a division. So it's not worth massive strops that we haven't got someone who'll bang 20+ goals in, as 20 other teams will be in the same boat.

Nothing to do with being “the lord saviour” of Jolley. Merely pointing out some of the hysteria I’ve seen today based purely on the fact we’ve not signed anyone permenantly today. As much as you say they are entitled to their opinion, I agree, but in the same vein so am I and others who disagree with them as equally as they do me. To be honest, I’m also disappointed we haven’t been able to get someone decent through the door today, but that doesn’t mean I think we are bound for relegation and the windows been a total failure, because it hasnt and we aren’t. Pointing out that I’d rather we didn’t go and get someone for the sake of it I thought would be quite a sensible thing despite any disappointment we haven’t been able to get anyone. That we still have weeks to get loans/unattached players is a simple fact. Let’s not forget where we started from eh? A team which almost lost us our league status.

The thing it is not just today he has had 3 months and the Dembele money to identify and sign a forward.I have had every confidence in Michael Jolley from day one ,but think that this is a failing that I hope doesn't come back to bite us.

Maybe the location is a problem, if MJ is wanting the players to move here and may have had made the decision harder for the player. But I would have like to have seen us make a couple of permanent signings, oh well not to be.

Agree with this. One of our biggest problems last season (amongst others) was lack of a goals. So a proven goalscorer should surely have been the number one priority? Wouldn't like to wait until Jan to try again, so for me, we must bring someone decent in on loan. Can't afford not to. Here's hoping.

I am glad Michael has not wasted the money we have just to say we have signed a striker
He will spend it imo but not until he thinks we have got the right man,
He is here for the long haul not to get promotion this season and move on,
We will get the right man either in January or even the summer,
So I expect us to have a season of ups and downs and finish mid table
Then strengthen again in the summer and go for it next season.

But he had identified at leat two forwards that we know of in Angol and Bowman..... We can't force clubs to sell or players to sign... They've got to have to commitment and desire to want to come to GTFC and make a difference! We have also signed Cook and Vernham who both describe themselves as strikers, despite what we all say!

Thought this was an interesting post by the Accrington chairman on twitter earlier today.
“Why is it so difficult to understand @EFL ? Clubs higher up the pyramid are solely concentrated on their own squad. Only after this will they give us decisions which is quite right. All I hear now understandably is we will let you know Friday. Potential transfers are now loans.”

Some people are making out we have been rejected by a few players,
I do not think that is the case,
We have been turned down by one who I refuse to say his name but Bowman did not turn us down,
His club rejected our offer so we did not even talk to him.
Other deals that have fallen through have not been made public so we move on and keep trying.

I agree with the sentiment Pete but, as things stand, I don't see a squad with any strength in depth, any goal threat and any wide attacking intent. There's an awful lot to do before we look anything like a mid-table squad.

Perhaps they should get some advice from Bignot. He had no problems signing players.

Jolley has previously stated though that it would take more than one window to get the squad he wants.

And Slade had no problem getting rid of them - pity Osborne, Jones & even Yussuf aren't still here.

I don't feel that our problem was not signing players on the last day but not signing players good enough throughout the window. Admittedly we had to get rid of garbage before we could get fresh but I don't feel M.J. has really been successful in dealings with his signings. Does anybody really stand out as a great signing even for league 2 standard. I thought we were going after a bit more speed-don't see it in this present squad. I think M.J. will eventually transform us but hope we don't fall too far behind before we become good.

I think Hessenthaler, Welsh and Vernam will all prove to be good signings for League 2. Whitehouse would have been a decent signing too although probably not to the extent that some were bigging him up on here. Cook isn't a bad player either provided we can get the best out of him. Russell is almost certainly an upgrade on Killip which is how he should be judged. I am less convinced by our defensive signings but equally they're probably an upgrade on Clarke and Osbourne. The one that does strike me as a bit of an odd one and I'm far from convinced he'll prove good enough is Robles but I haven't seen him play yet so I guess I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

He's a pale imitation of Podge. Can hustle defenders and links well but not sure about his heading. No real strengths but seems hardworking.

You want to remember who gave you his season ticket so you could get Braintree tickets
?? I have absolutely no idea who you are, nor did i go to the Braintree play off match. I'm not sure why you got so offended, but my point still stands - you said Hurst started the season without a recognised striker, i said you're wrong.

There is another user using name Samg sorry must have confused you. You actually said i was talking shite bit different from saying I am wrong, tell me then why Hurst signed Vernon as a last minute panic buy.

Ah no worries - different user. l don't know what you're getting at...You said he had no recognised goal scorers. He had Bogle and Jackson...yes, he also signed Vernon. I'm pretty sure Vernon was not brought in for his goal scoring prowess (we had Bogle for that!)...he's never been a prolific goalscorer. He was brought in to do a totally different job. He has attributes that neither Jackson, nor Bogle have. and vice versa (ie they can score goals, he can't.) Just because you play up top, does not mean you have to bang in 15, 20 goals a season.

Thinking about it-if we sign loan players in this window from a higher league it could be more beneficial to us than permanent signings both financially and a better quality player. We would also possibly have spare money for the January window.

Sam Jones to Dundee to put that one to bed for good. Him going to Shrewsbury has turned out to be such a pointless and infuriating transfer on reflection. No benefit for any party involved really. It depresses me that a combination of shite man management and terrible luck has stripped us of a chance of lining up with Jones, Osborne and Whitehouse in the same team.

Koiki would be a great addition. Left sided, quick and robust. Dixon and Welsh mix up for the first goal on Tuesday. Welsh only has a 10 yard circle of influence in the middle so our flank is vulnerable. There was a similar moment earlier which Macca saved at the near post. Not convinced by Welsh against anyone quick.

Sam Jones turned Dundee down.
I’d have Sam back in a heartbeat Definitely had a bit of an attitude problem but who wouldn’t when being dragged off by that girl private Slade to be replaced by dross.....
