Noticed that both teams are fielding 8 subs! Is that a change of the laws or just some agreement between the two teams?

5' CLOSE! A great break down the right by Vernam, who puts a low cross into the box for Woolford, but Gainsborough goalkeeper Stewart denies the midfielder's close-ranged effort
That's what I like to see, midfielders getting into the box.

Our defence and keeper untroubled really, a couple of fairly routine saves to make but we've looked solid and very much on top. Woolford had a good half as did Rose, although the latter lost his rag towards half time after being caught by one of their players after a great piece of play on his (Rose's) part and was lucky it's only a friendly. Hooper and Vernam energetic up front. Good stuff.

Don’t think the wind has been that bad.....although in the stand maybe it’s not so noticeable It would have been a lot worse playing in yesterday’s 30+ temperatures...they’d have been exhausted after a few minutes

We played some good stuff today but we were rarely troubled. We were very patient and kept our shape very well. Rose and Vernam were the pick of the bunch. Vernam ran his socks off and was unlucky not to be on the score sheet. Impressed with Clifton today and Woolford had a good game. Trinity weren’t much of a challenge quite surprisingly seeing as they held a strong Peterborough side for 85 mins in mid week. Ross Hannah played about 35 mins for Trinity and was all but anonymous. Still not sure where our goals are gonna come from which is a funny thing to say after a 4-0 win. Robles got 10 mins and poked the ball home from close range after a mix up in the box, he also had an effort that went wide but I’ve not sussed him out yet.

I was unfortunate not to go today due to work but sounded good. I know we dont have a 20+goal Scorer. But we do seem to have a few that will pop up with 4 or 5 over the season. If we go back to promotion season when podge dried up so to speak we had very little in reserve. I would rather see 7 or 8 players that will score 4 or 5 over the season which would give a 28 to 40 goals. If we had one player that scored 20 and then got injured or went off form we would have nothing. Even so sooner or later other teams get wise to an out and out goal scorer and make it difficult for them to get on the score sheet.

People keep going on about the 20+ goalscorer. Now I don't mean to pile pressure on Hoops but I sure hope he's the man to do it. He's scored a few in preseason which can only add to his end of season flurry of goals. If he keeps up this form, who knows.
I'm hopeful and content with the team so far.

Got to agree about Hooper. Since Mr Jolley arrived it's clear that he has been working on him and he looks a different player, full of confidence. He looks like he is enjoying himself under MJ and is now finding the net more often as a result.

A good workout for most of the squad and the pattern of play works well enough. We stall a little on the left sometimes but hopefully Fox will grow more into his role. Ideally, Wright, Robles and Ahkeem would have had more game time but MJ made sure the game was won first.

MJ has certainly put Hooper and Rose through a mangle and squeezed out talent we didn’t know either had at one point. I didn’t rate neither of them until Slade went. Hooper has looked like a new player and seems to want the ball more. I’m not gonna say whether he can or can’t hit the goals in as he’s never been prolific. 29 goals in 6 years but if he starts this season how the last one ended then who knows?

I definitely got the feeling that this is likely going to be the team to start next week. I think MJ approached the game to give that first 11 a good run out and likely you say the changes didn’t come until the game was wrapped up. There was none of the wholesale changes at the break and another glut in the second half to get everyone minutes. Sam Russell didn’t see the field at all and A. Rose only got a couple of minutes and Wright only seconds.

Quite pleased with the way the afternoon panned out
We played some neat and tidy football and scored the goals needed to win a game
We were full of running - Vernam in particular - and kept on trying to play the ball through, rather than just hitting and hoping
I know next week it’ll be a completely different scenario but if we keep this kind of game up, I’ve a feeling it’ll bring us some good times in the months ahead

Quite enjoyed my first look at the 'new team/formation. Echo what most people have said on here but would would give an additional shout out to Woolford who, albeit a friendly, was very good today.
Also I realised today that it's the first time I have watched Town for a long time without a knot in my stomach. Long may that continue.

I think it was the play leading up to the 4th goal, extremely patient and we'll worked. Noticed that when we crossed there was a player long to pick up any crosses that went astray and retain possession.

A completely different feel this pre season and im enjoying it , i like the way we look like we going to play this season too with passing football and width to stretch teams, welsh is quality you can see he sees the pass on all the time and i think this guy will be the main man for us this season..
Imo we need a wing back as fox doesnt look comfortable as say hall johnson and even harry clifton as today clifton looked very comfortable there and always looked a threat going forward were as fox seemed happy to stay back and jolley was constantly telling him to push up the pitch..
This 352 formation you need wing backs who can get up and down and im not sure fox can do that but i suppose its new to him but would really like to see a wing back and a striker to still come in but i like to see the changes and look forward to saturday ...

I thought the pitch ruined it a bit. We were much the better side and showed some nice play even in the conditions. First time I’ve seen us this preseason and I am not sure we have the quality in the squad to achieve the success people are expecting. We have lots of young players and players who lack experience. I’m excited to see how they get on but I’d like to see a few more quality additions especially in attacking positions. I think we have to be patient if it doesn’t start off well.

Every BBC interview brings up the subject of Ali Koiki, each presenting the same response from MJ and it is getting rather tedious now.

Agreed, don’t you think it seems a bit weird Burnley were willing to allow him to play a trial game but 3 weeks later we’ve not able to sign him on loan. Makes you wonder what Burnley are thinking about him ?

First time I’ve seen us this preseason and I am not sure we have the quality in the squad to achieve the success people are expecting. We have lots of young players and players who lack experience. I’m excited to see how they get on but I’d like to see a few more quality additions especially in attacking positions. I think we have to be patient if it doesn’t start off well.
Not sure why you thought the pitch ruined it a bit, we were only saying that it looked in great condition and the groundsmen had done a good job.

Looks like we are quietly going about our business of playing good football to feet and sharing the goals around, I`ve seen most of the preseason games and its a huge improvement on last seasons Sladeball.
I like the look of the new signings and the way that they are gelling into a team, we now have more youthful energy and look to be very fit, we are going to do well this season I`m sure

Having seen the very dry pitches at Clee and Barton it was a relief to see what a fine job the groundstaff had done. The thick grass did slow the ball a bit though.

Agreed, don’t you think it seems a bit weird Burnley were willing to allow him to play a trial game but 3 weeks later we’ve not able to sign him on loan. Makes you wonder what Burnley are thinking about him ?
I don't find that bit weird. They probably want to get him through their pre-season schedule to have a look and identify where they see him developing. It might be that there are a few potential moves for him and they are weighing up the best one. He is the only trialist MJ hasn't ruled out so I think he will sign this week or before the loan window shuts at the end of August. I just think after about 5 attempts, we should be asking a different question when it is clear what the answer will be.

I think the holdup with signing Koiki is that Jolley has limited budget left and is still on the market for a striker. If we sign one before the deadline and have change to spare for Koiki then we can sign him. I think the hold up is us and not Burnley

That's also fits in with MJ's response on the topic last week when he said 'when the time is right i'll go back to Burnley and ask the question'.... Or words to that effect.

Posting as a Town ex pat, who now lives in Gainsborough and as a shout out to the Town fan who I had the pleasure to stand next to, behind the goal during the first half (told you I would ). Grimsby played some nice football and were easily the best side in this game, rarely troubled by a Trinity side rebuilt since last seasons relegation from the National League North. What this performance is worth, is difficult to gauge, but having been to all Trinity's pre season friendlies this season, I can offer the following observations: Peterborough were a well organised outfit that played some nice football, but lacked that killer touch in front of goal. Town did better than them. Barnsley were a good team who like Town, dominated the match, but did not create as many chances as Town. Mansfield was not much of a proper game in that they brought the kids and thankfully for Town, were well beaten by Trinity. I think to summarise, lots of reasons to be cheerful for this coming season and whilst as we all know, pre season friendlies can mean nothing once the season proper starts, at least at this stage, things are looking at least a little hopeful. I wish you all the very very best of luck for this season. I hope to get over to BP at some stage this year, though have to admit the easy in and easy out of non league football does appeal to me a bit more these days. Think my problem is, that I am stuck in the perpetual nirvana that is 1998, can never top that !. UTM & God Save Livvo.

Well i hope to god that aint the reason .. We have just sold dembele so thats extra cash as he was not expected to leave when jolley was given his budget surely. i hope for the life of me we aint not getting this over the line for the sake of a few hundred quid here and there, we still need a striker too so i hope MJ has the money available to do what he needs to do. This season could be a good one but MJ needs all the help he can get within reason from the club and i hope he will get it.

I heard from the farmer's wife, who's cousin was speaking to the butcher, who's daughter works with a fishmonger that we are looking at a striker from Oxford and that Ben Davis is hoping he can get a contract. I am not saying i know, its a rumour I heard and do not know where the source of the information. I thought I put out there.
Looking forward to the start of the season, knowing at least we will be playing football and what it brings. hopefully exciting times ahead

Maybe MJ has to offload one before getting Koiki in? Three left wing backs is hard to justify when building a squad. Try explaining that one to JF. Three for one position when some think that having five CMs for three places is having depth. After Whitehouse's injury, I still think MJ will be looking to strengthen there. It's a long way to January and we'd be just an injury or two away from not having choices or back up in that area. MJ has gone on record saying he'd like two players for each position. 5/3 is not quite there for CM and 3/1 for left wing back is overkill especially as he has trialled RHJ there.. Maybe Koiki is versatile enough at his age to provide cover in other areas too. Regarding another striker.. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't sign another one. If the team is more solid in defence and midfield has more possession and not only creates more chances but also better quality chances, goalscoring could look after itself no matter who plays up front. Like everyone else, I would like to see a marquee striker signing, but I don't think it would be the end of the world if we didn't sign one..

I liked Koiki's athleticism and ability to spot the movement of others and play them in. Under our wing back system, wide players have to work so we need the cover. Woolford looked good against Trinity but he is better employed inside. His and Fox's recovery speed are a big question mark when we don't have the ball.

Maybe I’ve misjudged it but i hear people talking about being right up there and a promotion season. That would be great but it would be a huge surprise to me. We have a much changed and hopefully stronger defence and midfield. Our problem last season was scoring goals, can anyone look at our attacking players and honestly suggest that we are in a stronger position than when we started last season. I’m pleased Vernam is here because he has real quality, but I am struggling to see where the goals will come from. Hopefully we will get 2 or 3 quality additions in before the window. We barely stayed up last season and don’t seem to have strengthened our key weakness from last year.

Looking at oxfords squad last year wes thomas would seem the obvious name as he was released in may. The other 2 possibilities would be Gino van Kessler or agon mehmeti

Good to make your acquaintance yesterday Shipwrecked! It was good to have a chat about the Town of today and from back in the day. Funny that we were reminiscing about ‘98 and Livvo and then one of the legends from that era, Paul Groves, walks by at half time It was a good afternoon all round....weather, result, ambience and company. Your assessment of the events now being an “outsider” were spot on Let’s hope it’s going to be a successful season for GTFC in both cases!

Ahh...excelent, sometimes people do remember, a genuine person which to me has always made being a Town fan special. Trinity supporters have a bit of the Town about them too, never expect too much, but fiercly proud when they over achieve. It was a pleasure to meet you. As a final footnote, there is a guy who takes some quite good photos of the action, does it for free, which is no great suprise at Trinity's level, but they are worth a look. I post the link below for those interested. Once again, the very best of luck, i will be watching!. Andy http://www.flickr.com/photos/rudders9999/albums/72157699183529634P.S. If you look carefully, you will find one of the photos that shows both of us behind the goal !.

Can't see 157, but 50% of the attendance were Grimsby and I would say it would have been 450 making it somewhere around the 900 mark

I haven't seen Koiki play yet, but i knew after 1 game that Conor Townsend was too good for non league and would play higher. I knew after 1 game that Charles Vernam would be a player worth pursuing. Perhaps the fans who have seen Koiki play recognised the same traits?

Ridiculously harsh on Church. He was a capable enough grafter who did well at a lower level but just wasn't quite quick or good enough for the 5th tier. Certainly not an 'abomination' in any way, shape or form.

Every dog has its day, as the saying goes!
The other one I recall was Ademeno who was a big disappointment given his billing. Injuries aside, I'm pretty sure that the only goals he scored for us were hopelessly mishit shots which somehow found their way into the net!

Church covered an awful lot of ground in a match, under Slade's regime this would have made him star player.Thought we got rid too soon as he was getting better towards end.

That's EXACTLY the same as the attendance for our home game v Donny last Tuesday.
Thanks les! My bad, as the young uns say. Apologies to Codalmighty.. Self imposed ban now till after FG.

A few good shots there SiG It's a good job your man had his wide angled lens on hand to fit in the back row behind the goal I was telling one of my Tiger workmates this morning about the Trinity set up.... I was expecting something like what North Ferriby have but what you have there in Gainsborough is a credit to everyone associated with the club. I thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and hopefully you'll have a lot more enjoyable games to witness yourself in the coming season..

Ridiculously harsh on Church. He was a capable enough grafter who did well at a lower level but just wasn't quite quick or good enough for the 5th tier. Certainly not an 'abomination' in any way, shape or form.
Surely a players ability is subjective? That's just my opinion of the few times I saw Church play live. Who's to say that's wrong? I respect your opinion however.
