Cmon England

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

A little untidy so far. Individual bits of good play but ball given away too easily.

Decent effort at a header from Kane all I can recall from us (I missed the first 10 minutes or so) - not sure he could have done more than that with it, however.

Sterling must be about ready to produce a real piece of magic in a minute, otherwise I cannot believe he gets in the squad never mind the starting eleven.

Yankee doodle referees that don't know the game or the rules. Should stick to their own sports.

Alli injured? Good. Stick Loftus-Cheek in. He's done nothing wrong this tournament. Not to mention a heck of a lot more than Alli has done for England in living memory!

Loftus Cheek wouldn’t take half the excrement the Colombians are doing to us now and they wouldn’t want to as he’s a big lad. Looks like Alli took a stud in a tender area more than anything. This is shite though and looks likely to go all the way - as expected by anyone who doesn’t watch all of their football on TV or on a games console.

promising until the last third...no width on the left....Kane getting little support....Maguire so far this world cup has been one player who has impressed me though.

Conspiracy theory:

FIFA have instructed referees to keep 22 players on the pitch unless blatantly obvious red card.

Another dodgy decision that headbut, let alone the holding of Sterling* when the Colombian girl private threw himself to the floor. I started off feeling neutral about them, but they're just another bunch of cheating cnuts.

* very stupid because it could have been an unnecessary penalty; like Sterling would do anything with it if he got the ball.

Really need to stop dicking around on the ball. Too much tippy tap in our own half then we lose the ball because of poor decisions.

Swin are you old enough to remember a time before penalties? Did they settle it with pistol duels or something?

Most games were settled by goals in open play, penalties were rare

We never make things easy but they are on 4 yellows to our 2 which could make a difference in extra time and we still have 2 subs left to their 1 I think.......clutching at straws I Know

Crap management from Southgate. They had offered almost nothing (even with Alli and Sterling all but invisible) but he decided to get us to try and defend our narrow lead before doubling down by bringing on Dier.

Even worse was the usual England way of standing off them, not even attempting to close the ball down! Idiotic.

Oh well, at least we've got two defensive central midfielders on the pitch now, with just one sub remaining.

I don’t get this. They are on yellows.
Run at them Draw the foul.  We supposedly have the fresher legs.
It’s about confidence. That’s Southgates job.

We do not have anybody in midfield capable of making a defence splitting pass, the only player I can think of is Wilshere, and you can only get 35 minutes out  of him before he's injured.

2 small goalkeepers, 6’1 and 6’. Pickford looks calmer than Ospina.

Hopefully this is a chance to finally lift the penalty hoodoo.

My heart has just calmed down.never seen the pilgrim go as mad as it did tonight.
A few thoughts.
That is a MASSIVE win from a psychological/ mental point of view.colombia had the upper hand and we'd gone to pieces.but we survived re grouped and had the mental fortitude to win through. Southgate is where Jolley wants to be in  a few years time. Calm, collected, attention to detail, mental strength and no stone left unturned. The David brai lsford approach personified.
Sweden are awful.we need shooting if we can't beat them.grondquist has been their best player by a country mile and he's a slow 34 year old man mountain. We will play round him no problem.
What Southgate needs to work out is how we maintain the quick passing, flowing movement in the first 30 mins we showed tonight and v Tunisia for the remainder of the game.
IMHO trippier, maguire and Kane were outstanding.and fair play to dier. Bloody awful performance but the guts to come and take a pen that we all thought he'd miss. Is Kane the most complete centre forward in world football today?

Kieran Trippier is the best right back in the world right now. Fantastic crossing, great set piece delivery and very solid defensively. Using a formation where it relies on the wing backs for width, it's just a shame we don't have someone as good on the left.

Good point about Dier - bloody criningly awful performance but he buried his pen. Wish Hendo hadnt been booked though, he is far better

Best comment I’ve seen on beating Colombia was in the comments set of the Guardian: ‘Farc me!’

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

Surprised forza is praising Southgate as we only needed penalties because he decided to attempt to shut up shop when we had Colombia on the ropes. Defensively, we're not good enough to try this and we were lucky to get away with it in the end. The fact that we were well-prepared for penalties doesn't forgive the tactical failings before then.

How can it be that we didn't once try to run the ball at their defence in that period immediately after their defenders were getting booked left, right and centre? Bonkers for me. Sterling not very effective (again) but he's still quick and strong and he should have tried to run at them a couple of times in an attempt to draw a rash tackle.

Sweden are very limited as a team but they are well-organised and competent. The way we collapsed mentally in the second half and for much of extra time (just whacking it forward in hope/panic) makes me worry whether we'll be able to apply our superior ability to do enough against them.

Could be penalties again.

Its tournament football ....a scraped win gets you through as Greece, Iceland have been showing in recent tournaments...however from a tactical / performance viewpoint ...

Kane - back to the goal for large parts, battling for himself. Zero service from either side. Excellent performance from him regards his own touches and hold up but hardly in the box. I am sure there will be a "heat map" of his positioning and touches popping up somewhere but to have a striker in the kind of form he is in and not give him a sight of goal isnt sensible

Alli/ Sterling - ? I could be being extremely ignorant of something else they were doing last night but regards assisting us in attacking the opposition they were non existent.

Young - not found wanting defensively but isnt a left wing back, didnt get a great deal of help from the anonymous Alli admittedly but Rose got around the side a couple of times in his brief spell and with a natural left foot can put the balls in when the strikers want them and crucially curling naturally away from the keepers. Whenever Young crosses he has to check back onto his right, that falters the strikers run and the ball naturally curls towards the keeper.

Really suprised that either Rashford/ Cheek/ Vardy didnt come on sooner.

Dont recall a clear cut chance created in open play in 120 mins .... need to have a good think on how to improve that.

Major positive though...every England penalty hit the target at least !!

I think Sterling did at least 'occupy' their defenders during the first hour or so of the game. Won a few free-kicks and linked up quite well with Kane and the midfield. Did little in attack but was actually present. Alli non-existent as a force either in attack or defence. I don't recall the last time he put in a decent performance for England, clearly isn't fit and clearly shouldn't be in the team.

It's a pity that Rose hasn't been playing regularly because of his problems with injury and depression over the past couple of years. If he was in the kind of form we saw two years ago, he'd be a real asset. I think I still probably prefer him to Young, however.

Pickford - Great, not really done anything wrong upto now but recieved stick for some reason. - 9
Trippier - Great game again - 9
Walker - Ok game but always seems to have a mistake waiting, probably needs more experience in role. - 6
Stones - Solid game for me - 7
Young - Solid enough but seems to have lost his wing play somewhat, missed his deadball in Belgium game. - 7
Maguire - MOM for me and been the most consistant player so far -9
Henderson - Ok game but to much sideways ball when better options going forwards -8
Ali - Did nothing for me but at least kept in advanced positions, game changed when he went off as we went too defensive and deep. - 5
Lingard - Some good stuff but quiet in the main, Like Sterling he is a player that can set a game alive with a trick. - 7
Sterling - seems to be getting poor or no service from the midfield and then when he does get it is double marked. i would keep on with him as i think teams are genuinely worried by him. - 7
Kane - Nothing spectacular really, held the ball up really weel and bought some valuable free kicks, no real chances in open play. - 8

Subs

Dier - As it says on his tin Dier. not great at all but can be forgiven for taking a huge penalty.
Vardy - No service or balls really for him to run at. hope he gets a goal at some point and may well get more space against better teams that leave space at the back.
Rashford - Did ok in short time he was on, time to make a difference.

The Manager
Think he made a very poor decision to bring on Dier for Ali, once this change was made we dropped too deep and didnt have an advanced mid for an outlet. Dier jogged around aimlessly and played the ball negatively. Henderson started to push up more in the second period of extra time which helped.
Loftus Cheek i feel would have been more effective than Dier and would have brought a more attacking  threat which may have kept more of the Columbians in their own half.
Negative changes changed the game for the worse, we need to keepp pressing we simply arent any good at sitting on a goal.

Pretty good summing up Monkeyboy. Dier held his nerve for the penalty but is he really England class. I've never really been a huge fan of Henderson but he's put a lot of hard work in and deserves his place. Ali seems injured so I would bring in Rashford and keep the rest of the team for Sweden with a query over Young/Rose.

Sorry but this is one of the worst England teams I have seen to have ever reached a World Cup, lets be totally honest we are not going to win the World Cup we couldn’t even must up a shot on target through open play during the first 90 mins against what Ian Wright described as a poor team. The worst thing for me is that if Sweden knock us out the quater finals we will take that as a minor success and tell Southgate to carry on with his bland cautious crap football.

It's a cup, the clue's in the name. World Cup. The best team doesn't always win. In fact bland, cautious football frequently seems to be the way to go in these tournaments (Greece, Portugal etc). We probably weren't the best team in '66 either but we got over the line first.

I'm not only enjoying this World Cup but enjoying watching this England team - the first time for a long time I may add.
To label them as "one of the worst world cup teams" is frankly comical and pathetic.
On the whole there a very young team still developing and to see the likes of Pickford, Trippier and Maguire to mention three step up to be key players has been brilliant.
I don't see it as bland football at all, true last night wasn't brilliant but it was a messy game.
We don't look good enough to win it if I am honest but for God's sake let's enjoy the ride.

We are seeded to reach the final.  3 of the 4 teams in the other  half of the draw are better than us.  We can only do our best.  Teams evolve, change and hopefully improve.  Alli and probably Sterling can be replaced.

With captain Kane we always have a punchers chance.  6 goals from 6 shots on target.  Teams that have gone home have usually not had a proven scorer in form.  We do have.

The players have grown a lot after last night.

Colombia finished 1 point behind Argentina after 18 qualifying matches.  A Messi hat trick in the last game ensured that they just pipped Colombia.  We beat a good team, who were very dirty.  Our fans were outnumbered 6 to 1, so effectively, we won an away match in their back yard.

We should have some faith for the strong leadership, on and off the  pitch, new spirit and strong belief.  English football is looking exciting for the next 12 years or so.

Not sure if this was mentioned during the game but why did they have so many fans? It's not like it's just a quick trip down the road for them, or does Russia have a high Colombian population?

Anyone over the age of 40 who says they have faith in an England football team is not being honest, I’m a realist and refuse to get carried away after having my England emotion virtually drained out of me over the years. it would take an awesome performance against Sweden playing like they did against Tunisia in the first twenty minutes before I jump on the believe wagon.

Don’t get me wrong I’m enjoying the feel good factor around the country I’ve got my England flags flying but I just don’t get the feeling that we could actually win, we have gone through with a flick of a coin we’ve had a lot of luck (due some to be fair) we had a lucky qualifier to get there we then had a lucky qualifying round with 1 pub team and Tunisia who were not much better. We then struggle to beat a poor team without there best player let’s be honest we were crap, France or Brazil would of annihilated us on that performance, I really hope we can step it up against the Swedes because on that performance we will be going out.

Greece, and Portugal were not the best team on paper but by winning the tournament they rightly became the best team at the respective tournaments, and from what I remember especially of Greece they were playing some great football. We finished top of the group stage unbeaten in 66, we beat Mexico France, knocked out Argentina and Portugal, and then beat the Germans and having watched the final I’d say convincingly, we won the World Cup because we were the best team.

You have completed turned the argument on its head by saying they were the best team because they won. There simply aren't anywhere near enough games in a tournament, and not everyone plays each other, to say that with any certainty. Imagine the Premier league table after 5 or 6 games and that's all the World Cup is.

Greece didn't play great football when they won in 2004. They were really solid defensively, very hard-working, good at set pieces and nabbed one or two goals on the break. Obviously, they deserved to win because they beat their opponents, but I went to their game vs Spain and neither team looked much good. Just goes to show what can be achieved with a bit of application and luck.

Unfortunately, I don't think we have either the application or luck to mirror their achievement. No passengers in that Greek team which isn't something which could be said about England at the moment.

He didn't have a great game going forward, but then again who did against the shithousiest of all shithousing teams who were massively helped by a weak referee? But his work rate was incredible. You take that and the threat of his pace out of the team and we will be much the worse for it. Everyone clamouring for Rashford, yet he didn't tear up any trees against Belguim reserves did he? Far better leaving him as an impact sub. If Alli isn't 100%, I'd put Loftus-Cheek in and would be really tempted to replace Young with Rose..

Three days to learn some lessons and I hope the points raised above are at the top of the list. If we're 1-0 up against Sweden with 10 minutes to go then bring on Rashford not Dier.

We are not good enough to just defend.

Thought Kane showed some footballing intelligence last night. Got the ball and without being a threat, made the opposition foul him. Would be good to see same kind of intelligence somewhere else in the team.

Can't understand why Alli is starting as he doesn't look fit and just seems lost tbh. Loftus-Cheek much preferred.

I agree about Kane - barely put a foot wrong and retained possession or won a free-kick almost every time he received the ball. Really impressed me last night - a classy player. If he was a bit quicker, Real and Barcelona would be battling for his signature.

Humble pie for me. After the Tunisia game I said I did not think McGuire was good enough or quick enough for international football but he has improved in each game and took it to a new level last night.

I think Henderson had another good game and is getting better and better, although he is no Kante, but I didn’t see any of the commentators actual pick out the fact that he lost the scorer at the corner for their goal. Henderson was stood in no mans land and McGuire had 2 of them on top of him so had little chance.

All sterling has for me is pace. His touch is poor, his passing is nothing better than ok, his final ball is terrible and if I see him run straight into a defender again the telly is going out of the window, every time. It as though he thinks they are going to jump out of the way.

I’m also not keen on Vardy as another option. To be fair if you are going to bring him on then when the opposition are pushing up then that is the time to do it but he had no effect and can’t hold the ball up so he was a passenger in extra time. I would prefer to see welbeck who is still quick, but can hold the ball up, buy a foul (like Kane did numerous times superbly last night) and can win a header.

All about opinions as always.

C’mon England and UTFM

Good God, what will or does make people happy. Our country has reached the  1/4 finals of the world cup and you still moan and pick fault.   God help MJ if we draw a game or even dare lose one. Get real and enjoy the moment.

If Town won the FA Cup there would still be people on here complaining about the lack of goals from open play, negative substitutions, lack of total football and the manager's post-match comments.

Come on Grim. Which one are you?

Careful, you're not allowed to a) have an opinion even if it is accurate and b) definitely not allowed to air it on here, unless you welcome horrendous mindless abuse from some moron or other, it is a forum for rose tinted bespectacled idiots only

We did not have a shot on target and the Colombian goalkeeper did not have to make a single save

If our next opponents realise that you can't wrestle players to the ground and the penalties therefore dry up we are copulated

Our top scorer and Golden Boot candidate has out of his total 3 penalties and one he knew absolutely nowt about as it just hit him

Our total inability to score from open play against anyone other than Africas best and Central Americas second best will be our undoing

Southgate has achieved nowt and is being heralded as some sort of genius (bit like Jolley really but at least he avoided relegation) and will no doubt still be the England manager for the next Euros and next World Cup as a simple progression to the last 8 is for some reason seen as a fantastic success

I really cannot see what there is to argue about there. Perfectly realistic assessment as was Grim74’s. It is all true but the rose tinted chaps just won’t accept it.

You have to look beyond the obvious surely. Just because a side reaches the QFs does not make them world beaters. England may have a realistic chance of reaching the final in some ways but it depends on two things - scoring goals from free play and defending properly against teams who are better than the low ranked sides we have played.

People have mentioned the achievements of Greece and Portugal but forget to say that the overall standard of the tournaments they won was appalling. They had to be, otherwise Greece and Portugal would not have won. Likewise this tournament could be won by England or Belgium or Sweden or .... none of whom are sides I would walk across the road to see play. Yes, there have been so exciting games, yes there are odd flashes of sublime skill but the overall standard so far is as low as any WC that I can remember. In fact the Spain/Russia game must rank as one of the most dire WC matches ever.

Southgate deserves a lot of credit for papering over the cracks as well as he has, covering the lack of class players with effort and organisation, but he is lacking in tactical nous before and during games. His subs are reminiscent of Hurst at BP. Also, for someone who has supposedly drilled the side in rapid fire short passing, England players soon forget his preaching. They spent much of the last match launching the ball hopefully up towards Kane which must have surprised some of his fans on the Fishy. But Saint Southgate has all his eggs in one basket because his subs bench does not include anyone who can change a game so it’s a case of “I’ve started so I’ll finish”.

I don’t rate Sterling but coming off the bench he could make more  impact against a tiring defence than he does running into defenders as a starter. Ali has never been fit from the first whistle against Tunisia but playing him shows how limited the resources and tactics are. But that is only tinkering really. We have what we have and barring injuries there are no better players waiting to come in. The manager has very few options bar hope and prayer.

Last night was exciting, absolutely  riveting, especially at the end, but surely nobody can think it should have got that close. But I’ve seen games just as exciting on Bradley and Barratts. Exciting does not automatically mean the same as great high quality football. If we are at a level of struggling against teams like Tunisia and Colombia then let’s have a bit of realism and stop this silly name calling of those who do not toe the whoopee party line as being negative. We are not negative. I hope we beat Sweden just as much as anyone, more than most in fact because I have followed every WC since 1958 and know what is quality and what isn’t.  But I support England like mad, just like I support Town, regardless of our relative standing and the ability or lack of it on the park.

Jesus Christ. We comfortably got through the group stage. Won three matches, got the penalties monkey off our backs. Why not just enjoy the moment. Be critical afterwards as much as you like, but I'm enjoying every minute of this. Stop trying to spoil it.

It is Tournament football,
,

If you win the Premiership or even League 2 then, imo, you are the best side and deserved winners.

To win a cup is totally different, you need to win a few one off matches. That is where England are at present. They could win 3 on a trot, it isn't about being a fantastic side it is just about winning through the next tie.

I have just browsed this thread, and am surprised at the amount of flak given to England.

We have been impressive - so much better than usual. The low point for me was when we played Italy in the Euros and we spent the entire 120 minutes playing the ball between the back 4 then booting it upfield  to Pirlo so he could start another Italian attack. That night I wondered if we would ever, ever get the hang of international football and the importance of not just keeping the ball but all the intent and movement and interaction that goes with it.

We are far from perfect now, but it has been a breath of fresh air to see us play out from the back with pace and purpose, and we have every chance of going further in the competition. There is the small matter of other countries best players trying to stop us playing to take into account.

Some players get on my nerves when playing for their clubs, especially Sterling, but once they pull on the England jersey all that is forgotten surely?  This is tournament football, and the only thing that matters is winning; some of the most attractive teams in the world have already gone home and it is just about getting the right results when it matters and England have done well so far.

No we weren't the best team in '66.

We were the most successful team in that particular tournament though. Portugal who had Euisebeo were a better footballing team than us, and Pele and Brazil got roughed up but they were a fantastic side as well. The best teams sometimes win a tournament if things go their way, but just often the winners are those that have been the most effective at winning the games as they come up. Mexico and France were nothing like they are today of course - both were pants in '66.

We're a young team with a young manager. I don't think anybody would claim we're the best team in the world but we're a lot better than we were 4 years ago.

Enjoyed it all and looking forward to Saturday though expecting a tight and tense game. Still pleased Peter Crouch and Andy Carroll aren't in the squad and still will be whatever happens.

Agree Rodley. The team's playing better than i expected (but then i hardly know the players because I don't watch the premier league) and better than 2 and 4 years ago. And we've got the best chance of getting to the final for a very long time. Not because they're a great team, just because of the way the draw has panned out (fixed to give Russia the best chance too?).

But Swin is being his usual 'look at me I've got a different opinion self. And RRFC and Grim have joined him. Fair enough, England are not a great team, but give them some credit guys. Young squad with a young manager, all with great potential in the future. Yeah, we've been let down before, but FFS, smile you miserable fornicators!

Oh yes we were! we started slow and got progressively better. We beat Argentina who were on a par with Brazil in those days. We beat Portugal comprehensively in the semi-final. Admittedly Norbert Stiles would be red carded today but we only made one mistake the whole game for their goal and both our goals came from sweeping moves of which we made many. Two years later, don’t forget, Man U comprehensively whopped Eusebio and Benfica.  It was not the best tournament for football, 1970 was better, but we were the best side regardless of home advantage. We had real quality players to spare in those days like George Eastham, Ron Flowers, Bill Foulkes and Greaves of course, who didn’t even make the side.

Why do you think I am miserable? My pleasure is/was as great as yours or anyone else’s when we won.

I know this is a Town forum but I do get fed up of people being so black and white! Not you , Kingston

It may be a generation thing but bandwagon jumping seems to be our new national sport and the media encourages it. Even Times writers like Henry Winter think the sun shines from Southgate’s posterior and says so every morning for no discernible reason. I think he just fancies the waistcoat and the hipster beard.

There are two things I really dislike, unadulterated criticism and uncritical praise. We get both in spades on here about Town and now we get it about England.

There is one other thing that gets me, too many people get addicted to the one liner, maybe they think the number of characters they can use is limited. They simply do not or cannot read posts properly before donating to the Red Cross or slagging off the poster.

Preferable to being up someone else’s bottom.
