Linked with a league two side for a big sum - could it be ya (Dembele money)?

Would you have him?

No.

If you have someone like him, or Rhead or any other 'unit' type striker you seriously limit how you can approach games.  It's either through them or not at all.  I like to think Jolley is smarter than that.

Nah. Too lazy for our 'team ethic', I'd have thought.

Disappointing record for Barnet last season as well. Was he injured?

They've got money to burn and a track record with 'big units'. My thought was that it could be FGR.

It is Lincoln apparently. Decent signing for them if he is fully fit.

Would be useful at free-kicks - Akinde & Rhead could be a 2 man wall when most teams use 4.

Cannot see him fitting into to our style. Think he is just a big unit, has blown more cold than hot in he last few seasons and although notches a few penalties I wouldn't be paying money for him or top wages.

I see Tyler Walker has gone to Mansfield along with Curtis Davies

89 goals in 169 appearances for Barnet since 2014, not sure he has been that cold tbh. Whether he comes to SB or not is another matter.

Scored a great number of goals in the past but was seriously unimpressive for Barnet against us both times last season and scored the same number of goals after starting more matches as the much maligned JJ Hooper. If the rumour is to believed that they've paid a significant fee for him as well then rather them than us.

7 goals in 32 appearances last season. When set against his record previously that is surprisingly chilly.
He would fit in well with your tactics tbh

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

If you want to play football then no way would I have him at BP. Having said that , he would be a perfect shoe-horn into the Gimps approach plus him and Rhead would cut the cost of having a ground roller.

Do you really think Rhead would partner Akinde IF we signed him? What about Green?

This forum has gone loopy. We don't want the past, we are the future, believe in MJ, he will lead us to pastures new. Fatty and lanky have been good for their clubs , but we should let the boss go for his elite players, all looking really good so far, lets not disturb him, the signings bring me a buzz

Mansfield have signed Tyler Walker and Craig Davies so i cant see it being them more likely imps.  Fits in with there long ball target man approach and have 2 cheats in the team lol.

Of course I would sign him, for a price that we could afford, which intuition tells me, probably rules us out. He's scored 56 league goals in 121 appearances over the last 3 seasons. He's as close to a guaranteed goalscorer in league 2 as you're going to get.

Didn't have a great season last year but I did notice that Barnet were horrific, excepting the last 7 games. Absolute drivel to suggest he couldn't fit in to our style as we don't know exactly what that will be yet. Barnet have always played to his strengths, which saw them often going direct, but whenever I've seen him play I've always thought he looks fairly neat and tidy with the ball. You need your strikers to offer different attributes and he would certainly do that. Thank the lickle baby Jebus that none of you manage GTFC.

wins an awful lot of his own penalties when he has the ball at his feet running at the opposition, he is alot more than just a physical unit IMO.

Akinde is not a great lump who thrives in a hoofball environment. He's a very good league two striker who was stuck in a terrible team last year and in the right environment will score 20+
I'd have him at BP in a flash but I don't think we could afford him and I doubt he venture this far north

I’ve always thought he looked a handful when he’s played against us, but he’s 29 in a few days’ time, struggled last season and has apparently lost much of his pace following a nasty injury a while back.

If he was out of contract by all means take a punt on him, but I suspect he’ll go for six figures (a la Kristian Dennis) which even if we had the means to spend, I’d rather it went on an emerging prospect who might yield some kind of return in the future.

You can't employ fitness coaches with youth in mind and hope to whip a guy like Akide into shape. He is what he is a fat lump who's energy levels are very low. With him, in a side, you reduce your style the big hoof no chance he ain't mobile enough.

Yes they did but according to their chairman the other day most of that money will be to stop them going bankrupt and ground improvements rather than being splashed on players.

The finances are too much for us so I understand people being disinterested based on that. But if you're ruling him out based on ability then you need your head testing. I'll be cheering on Cook, Cardwell, Rose and Robles but right now they can only dream of a goalscoring record like Akinde.

Find that ironic as a bloke I deliver to, said that with akinfenwa in the Wycombe side, they played some of the best football he's seen them ever play. Now, that may not say a lot about the dross he's seen before, but it's a pretty damning statement.

I remember having a certain king keith as a focal man under Buckley mk1 and that football was certainly anything but ugly

Why shouldn’t we go for someone who scores goals and Is a real handful I had a similar conversation with a few town fans at the Wycombe game when they was all laughing and joking at akinfenwa I tried to tell them he’s similar and scores goals and they all just laughed how many did he get that day and over the season ??? these two are a defenders nightmare as proved and imo we do need some experience upfront to help with the younger strikers at the club not so sure he would move up here though but I would be happy to have him at town ⚫️⚪️

I seem to remember that Paul Hurst was trying to sign him from Alfreton before he signed for Barnet in 2014.

It would have been interesting to see how our fortunes would have fared if he had come. He scored a 31 goals for Barnet the season they won the Conference and clearly made the difference to their prospects.

Who knows, with such fire power in our side we might have gone up as champions in 2015 instead of them??

Possibly, but that was also the season the Shop got a good haul of goals.

It was. And I'm taking nothing away from LJL who scored 20 goals overall I think, but had Akinde or someone like Podge had the chances he had over that season, they could've hit 40.

Good point. And I've never been one to exaggerate the goalscoring ability of the Shop.

Yep, he was injured at the start and missed pre season, he also wanted to leave Barnet last summer  according to the Barnet fans. Think his goal scoring record in his 4 seasons prior to that means he is worth a punt for someone.

We have 'allegedly' offered 100k up front with a similar amount linked to goals and appearances. Barnet have accepted an offer from a club, just not sure it is ours.

I hope it's us, as he's as close to guaranteed goals at this level.

Add Rhead, Green and we have that young lad on tour with us in Portugal from Grantham, I think we would be well placed to score more goals than last year.

Mansfield would but they've just signed Tyler Walker on loan, allegedly paying all of his £5K weekly wage. Staggering amount of money for a club that barely gets 4000 to home games.

So would County, but they have already spent hundreds of thousands on strikers already, then there's Swindon, Franchise and FGR too.

To be fair, we are generating this money ourselves though.
We sold Woodyard for 230k, so that will pay for a striker.

Plus we now have a waiting list for season tickets, so at least we are doing it the right way in my opinion.

But you gave Frecklington a huge signing on fee to attract him plus no doubt very high wages. If the size of the signing on fee is the norm rather than a one off then you need to keep generating substantial income over and above season ticket sales

I'm not one to pour scorn on the ticket sales you've achieved.  We can only look on in envy at how you've tapped into a new market of fans, it's an opportunity we badly missed out on and as a result are playing catch up financially.  I think we'll be able to counter that in other ways but that's not the point.

As positive as it is for you on those ticket sales, you're also in a position where the vast majority of those fans have been spoiled.  How many of those have ever experienced a bad season? If you have a bad season this year, will they hang around?  Chucking money at big wages is all good but if it doesn't work and the fans don't return next season, you're stuck with the high earners and not enough ticket sales to pay for them.

I am sure we will, new chairman is putting money in too.
But getting 8-10k at every home game helps. Plus we have 3 decent pre - season friendlies which I imagine is bonus cash. Wednesday for example have sold 3,500 tickets for a week Friday.

Your right, but I suppose they know what they are doing. I think taking nearly 30k to Wembley suggest there are more out there - They capped Season ticket sales at 6, 300 - So you cant actually buy one now (hence the Waiting List)

I'm not sure what happens when we have a mediocre season, but I imagine we only offer shortish term contracts. So at worst we would tighten our belts.

As a matter of interest, when you were doing well under Buckley etc, did you have similar interest in season tickets etc?

Nowhere near - although the Wembley interest was similar, maybe a touch higher, than Lincoln's. Blundell Park is a bit blighted by a legacy of hooligan problems and was also totally unsuitable for a reasonably comfortable conversion to all-seater; the toilets are crap, the catering is crap and is not a great experience for families - it isn't as bad as Donny's Belle Vue was, but if GTFC had a new stadium, I'd expect a similar uplift in season tickets and crowds as Donny experienced when they moved to the Keepmoat (as long as the team were performing ok). Until a new stadium happens, if it ever does, we haven't a hope in hell of getting anywhere near 6k plus ST holders. Where have the ST holders come from - are you drawing alot from Newark, Grantham, Sleaford and Skeg now

I guess you don't know what you've got til its gone, but i feel like at the time nobody ever stopped to think 'we're doing well', being in the 2nd tier just became accepted as a norm...well, it certainly felt like that as a young kid in the 90's/early 00's. Probably a healthy dose of the ol' Grimsby cynicism too!

Even during our double Wembley season in 97/98, that was following a relegation to the third tier so there was still probably a sense of getting back to where we belong, in a weird way.

Sure it felt different following our back to back promotions from the 4th tier though, i'm *just* too young to remember that.

Nope, I generally message on here when there's a Lincoln theme. We have only signed 4 players so far, there's lots to do.

As for the other comments about vitals, it's busier than it used to be, but the Banter site has lots more posts and daily traffic. Unlike the vitals one though, it doesn't raise money for the club when people click on the site or post on the threads.

Personally I think the few Imps that post on here are ok and it`s good to have some banter. Also just think when the bubble bursts we can use our new Imps friends to secure tickets when once again we have sold out the away end at SB.All joking apart they got it right off the pitch following some success on it and then have followed it up. I sincerely hope our top brass have noted what to do and try and follow the off the pitch example the Imps have set.

Honest answer to that is I am not sure. I think it is probably a few things, People returning, Lincoln is growing relatively rapidly but I think the main thing is that families are coming and certainly the junior Imps section is huge now. The football clubs they run, are almost sold out every holiday, and I think on the back of that people are buying in to the club. Also because we have been starved on any success, then I think people do not want to miss what could be a defining period in our history. I also think our chief executive who we got from Doncaster has been very clever in marketing, things such as the fan zone make coming to the game just a part of the experience. He's changed so much, caterers, corporate seats, ticketing on phones, small things, but improving the whole experience.

He has drawn the club much closer with the fans, and he is trying to tap into other areas of the county to increase the crowd - I think they are looking to add extra seating next season.

Obviously Danny has played a part too, and I do see similarities between him and Jolley -  I know I have heard Jolley say that he rates him, and I think he is trying to do similar things. Lets face it, it is only Fenty that is holding you back from being successful again. I would love to see us, you and Scunny all in division 1, that would do for me.

Maybe you could get us some tickets in August for the Findus too..

That Jules though........... Banned me several year`s ago for calling someone a bell ringing goon in amongst a thread on why Lincoln fans wouldn't venture to Grimsby on Boxing Day.

Yeah he was stood in front of me at County away last year - Spent the whole game berating Farman. Annoying character.

Summed up our problem in two words.

Most clubs have a CO who knows what they’re doing and want to push on. We’ve got Ian Fleming who, I’m sure is a lovely bloke, but has done frig all to move this club on in 20 years.

Is that a reflection of the overbearing nature of Fenty’s influence on every facet of the club? Probably. But you surely want as CO with the strength to tell Fenty to wind his neck in. Fleming appears to be happy to hide behind Mr Magoo, which is why we’re stagnating and probably will until there’s some real change.

Lincoln have made more changes to their club in the past two seasons than we have in twenty years. All borne out of an initial £350k investment. And before anyone mentions the income from their FA Cup run, we got the same kind of cash for Bogle. Even if we ignore the poor on field performance in that time, the non-progression off the pitch over the past two decades has been nothing short of a disgrace.

A GTFC fan recently posted on Twitter.. "Is it beyond the club to see the problem in linking a supposed “revolution” to one individual? As soon as he’s no longer flavour of the month or moved onto greater things, the whole thing stops. It should be a club-wide revolution.."

I've no idea about season tickets, but we got really good attendances generally in that era, though they tailed off a bit once we were established in the Championship, as they always do in any division. Our average for that period (87-99) was 7,237, but that includes some fighting against relegation seasons (a few, actually). I remember us getting 14 and 15k for home league matches and 19,000 v Spurs in the Cup. Because of ground restrictions we're really limited as to what we can do now, but there's no reason why we can't get back to similar sizes in the future, though I'm not sure we'll ever see the days of over 20,000 again (v Everton, Wolves, Exeter etc etc).

What`s happened with Farman is he still with you or has he left? Personally thought he was a decent keeper though like most liable to the odd gaffe I would have had him here for back up.

He has gone to Stevenage - Was okay in the National League, but struggled with the step up. Absolutely rooted to his line.

We have Josh Vickers who was good until injured, but he is back now. Plus we signed the National League keeper of the year a few weeks ago (Although Farman got that accolade too, when we were in the National League). Really nice lad Paul, just not quite good enough.

I seem to recall his Father had some good banter with some Grimsby fans regarding Paul.Like I say games I saw he was always ok not stand out but a decent enough back up keeper at this level. At Stevenage I am assuming he will be no1 so good move for him?

Exactly, he needs to be playing first team football and since he got dropped he seemed to be down the pecking order.

We also got a small fee for him so everyone's a winner.

Told tonight in the pub that Lincoln agreed £150k fee for Akinde and that only stumbling block is proposed length of contract. For those Imp fans who post on here this info came via a player who lives in our village via our post man, clue being we have two pubs and I drink in the Plough.

It's apparently more likely whether Akinde wants to up sticks from Kent, having a wife and young family and he doesn't seem to drive?

I heard the fee was around 100k down with a similar amount in add ons so it's similar to what you got told too.

The right type of player for Lincoln, big lump, who goes to ground easily to win penalties.

He learnt the art of cheating by watching South American football.

Will there be enough room in dressing room for Akinde and Rhead, perhaps a new extension will be required.

Scored goals in the past, not at his best last season, is he worth £150K, plus wages and accomadtion costs, only time will tell.

Gimps seem to think this is a 'guarantee for goals' type signing but I'm not convinced.

He may well do well but for the fee, add-ons and wages I' m not convinced he won't be more trouble than he's worth.

Time will tell but I am sure the money splashed by Notts, Imps and Mansfield should be guaranteeing automatic promotion. Wonder which one ( or more) will fail.

Good signing I reckon. One poorish injury-impacted season aside, he's consistently scored goals for the last 5 years.

(Yes, I know 307% of them were pens etc!)

If true, this will surely affect them financially if they do poorly this season. A massive gamble for 1 player...

Agree especially considering he featured in a relegation side last season 🤔

Great signing at this level.

Hard to sign a proven goalscorer as we have found out.

If true, him, Bostwick and Frecklington earn a combined £10k per week. I imagine Matt Green isn't cheap either. I can't see him settling up north myself.

He is relocating to the area with his family, so that will help. He played a season at the delights of Alfreton so I reckon he can slum it living around here for a few seasons. Not sure he will be on 4k a week or not because even one of our bloggers that has a lot of insider knowledge doesn't know his wage but I imagine he will be on a similarly decent amount to Freck and Bostwick.

We can for once afford to spend wages on good players and have earned that right, though the chairman and his sportsvest board members have chipped in with some considerable money recently.

Yep, Lincoln have had £250k invested recently and another £150k or so invested this week. This is on top of selling season tickets out, player sales, profit from attendances and cup runs in the last two years.

This proves, despite the claims of Fenty and Marley and their supporters on here, that there ARE people who are happy to invest money in unfashionable lower league football clubs with dilapidated stadiums...if they trust the people they’re investing in to provide a return.

It’s not GTFC that aren’t an attractive proposition - it’s the people running the show, who are supposed to be making some money.

I hope this clears things up for some of you.

At this level? He was at this level last season in a team that got relegated!

Players are only as good as their last season and last season Akinde was poor!

Ah, f@ck this, to all those gimps that jump.on OUR forum and think they're better than us and doing oh so well signing a striker that falls over easy them.Neymar....up yours, we are Grimsby,...we are the ones with the footballing history and a true, loyal fan base that are through thick n thin...when Akinde only scores 8 goals, you can stop sucking cowleys man bits and take a dose of realism, your fans are plastic, false and living on the glory of one season...now I'm off for a lay down in a dark room and kicking the dog on the way past!!

Do your research, Akinde was based on the South when he played for Alfreton and rarely trained with his team mates.

Accrington bucked the trend but titles (and promotions) are usually funded one way or another these days .

I think you’re clearly having a great run but a lot of it feels based upon “6 numbers on a Saturday night”,or indeed a rich man “living the dream”.

Lincoln have secured the services of someone who has definately been proven to be a threat to the opposition...i can only imagine that they have fought off competition for him so whether or not some people suddenly think he is shite, Lincoln have captured him so they have done well in that regard.
7 goals in 32 last season in a poor Barnet side, take that season out of it and he would have 80 goals in 132 games for them in the other 3 years.

That really is a damn impressive record and one that suggests he isnt a one season wonder.

Akinde is a very good goalscorer, but this signing tends to speak volumes about the style of football Lincoln still seem intent on playing.  I thought with Lincoln's new found wealth they would have strengthened far more than they have already.  That said, sadly I suspect we will be looking upwards at their league position compared to our own.  I actually think with the right backing, Michael Jolley could be a far better proposition as a manger than the Cowley brothers.  With the current Board though, Michael will have to juggle a bit and be very resourceful.  I still think we will finish in a very respectable position this season, if not impacting on the top seven.  I hope the Board will eventually back the fans and new manager's ambitions for the club.

Barnet were poor I agree, but a contributing factor to their poor performance was Akinde!

I watched Barnet a lot last season and Big John was slow, lacked any sort of effort or heartt, could barely head, shoot or pass the ball and he looked severely disinterested!!

Akinde's strength has alyways been collecting the ball, running at defenders and either scoring or winning a penalty... Where was that last year? He invariably either lost the ball, lacked the work ethic to run at and beat his man and just ended up in his bottom.

Call it illogical twaddle all you want but its fact that last season he was poor and did little to turn around Barnets fortune!! Certainl not someone I'd want in the trenches with me when the going gets tough!!

Akinde got injured at the start of the season and was rushed back before it fully cleared up according to the Barnet forum. He was playing catch up in a struggling side so no real surprise things turned out how they did. I doubt we would take a risk on a player if his injury was still likely to be an issue going into this season.

Don't get me wrong, I think he's a terrific signing for you. I'm just saying there's an elemt of risk considering the cost of the deal, his injury and form last season.

However, if he can recapture the form of previous years then he will almost guarantee 20+ goals a season.

Where do you see Rhead fitting in now? Will he be sold on do you think?

Of course it's a risk, any signing is a gamble. The bigger the fee the bigger the risk, but I am hoping that is countered by the fact that Akinde has generally played lots of games in his seasons since getting his break at Alfreton.

As for Rhead, you may all laugh but he has come back at least a stone lighter and looking fitter. Now that Akinde has signed I see MR as more of a bench warmer to bring on as a sub like Mansfield used to do well when they had him. I can't see Rhead getting in ahead of Akinde or Green regularly, then there's also Andrade who is smaller and very quick, I can see him getting into the side ahead of a Rhead as well.

I work at Grimsby Institute and we've just raised almost £1000 for Demi to help with her treatment so I agree a very worthy cause!

That's a good shout, something close to the club..
Keep the ideas coming then I'll get Forza to PM me and we'll agree between us..

I like this idea.could we persuade others to join in on the Caldwell/ Robles bet or any other predictions/ bets they might like to put up?

Be good get other people on board, as long as no one gets silly and it's kept to banter bets, thinking the demi cause is the one we should plump for??

The only problem of donating to Demi's fund is that the donation will need to be made fairly soon and we won't know who's won the bet until the end of the season.

A solution could be that you each donate a tenner to the fund with the agreement that the loser refunds the other person their money at the end of the season.

The Demi fund is immediate and being well supported. My preference would be for the Nathan Arnold idea. Good bloke, link with other Lincs clubs and mental health is generally under resourced. Perhaps our impish friends on here would like a wager on who finishes highest or whether or not they get promoted?
