Hey guys.  Prior to Arthur Mann being Grimsby Town Assistant Manager with Alan Buckley 1988–1994, do any of you know who were assistants prior to 1988.

Any info/help would be appreciated, thanks.

Wasn't the 'trainer' was the fore runner of the Assistant Manager?

Thinking Jim Clunie to Lawrie Mac, George Aitken to Tommy Casey??

Then had Dave Booth to assist George Kerr and Terry Daracott with Mick Ly*€%!!!

I seem to remember D1ck Connor having that job maybe under Ron Ashman (Well he had the job (allegedly) of going round the pubs on a Friday night looking for the players)

In the good old days we had a manager and a trainer,

No assistants or goalkeeping coach,

No  fitness coach or any other coach,

Apart from the one the team used to take them to away games.

If you look at the official team photos the assistant manager is normally in them:

88/89 Mann
87/88 Nobody
86/87 O'Riordan
85/86 Grotier
84/85 Nicholl
83/84 Nobody
81/82 Booth
80/81 Booth
76/77 Conner
75/76 Aitken
74/75 Appleton
73/74 Clunie
72/73 Clunie
70/71 Higgins
69/70 Higgins

I am assuming Coach and Trainer are now what would be called Assistant Manager

We didn't have a manager at all until 1920, the players appointed a leader who did the job.

Wow, I've just been nosying at some old programs that were my dads when Dave Booth was Grimsby Town assistant and manager in the early 80's. He's never stopped being a manager since and now aged nearly 70, teams all around Asia including Thailand, Maldives, Malaysia, Myanmar and Laos national teams and league and currently in India at Ozone F.C.

He's managed all around the world but the only thing he's won in this country is the  Lincolnshire Senior Cup in 1983–84. Mind you that's probably more than Slade.

Only just started reading through the 'Grimsby Town Story 1878–2008' book and what you listed seems to be on par and accurate.

According to the book though, in 1985 Peter Grotier was temporary manager until Dudley Ramsdan who originally went in for Liverpool and Ex-England player Phil Neil, but he turned it down. Dudley brought in Mick Lyons for the 1985–1986 season who in turn brought in Terry Darracott who he played with at Everton as Assistant Manager, but he left after one season and returned to Everton. In the 1986–1987 season Don O'Riordan and Phil Bonnyman were selected as first team coaches and Mick Lyons decided to switch Grimsbys play to long-ball style football.

When Tom Johnston was appointed Grimsby Town manager in 1962, George Higgins came in for the 1962–1963 season to 1971 as trainer (assistant manager) and Clarry Williams was assistant to Higgins.
