I think the 3-year deal is mostly because MJ thinks he's worth it - but it also serves to send out a very clear message that a successful youth system is the key to this club progressing.  Well done.

Not to mention that it ties him to the club for the foreseeable future. If he continues to progress as well as he has done since he got into the team, bigger clubs will undoubtedly come knocking in due course.

It is worth the money just to make it obvious to the youth players that there is the possibility of making it into the first team. One good example often breeds another and with Clifton and Wright there it shows the manager is open to using young players. It is a reminder of the days when Ford, Drinkell and the Moores led on to Wilkinson, Lund, Henshaw and Agnew. They cost us very little but what were they worth to us?

Clifton reminds me a little of Gary Henshaw as a player. I trust he will be better coached than Gary was when Lyons came.

More excellent news. Max and Harry's deals show a real commitment to the ethos Dave Roberts talked about in his statement a few months ago. Also a massive statement to kids in the academy or players that might potentially join the academy or youth team.

Also interesting reading:

"I think in the long term, Harry will play in central midfield for Grimsby. I certainly wouldn't rule that out in the short term either, but his versatility and ability to play in several positions is a big strength for him and for us."

"The greatest mistake you can make in life is to continually be afraid you will make one."

Good for him (and us). He certainly played his part in keeping us up, especially with that run down the right which led to us winning the penalty to equalise v Barnet. Deserves that extra bit of security.

I suspect this is also about protecting our asset. Get him on a decent contract, if he has another good season his value is significantly more if he’s under a longer deal. Jolley will know all about this game from his Burnley days. They are very good at hoovering up younger players and developing them some more.

To quote Alan Hansen...."you won't win anything with youth"....well tell that to fergie and here's hoping a certain MJ makes him eat those words again....so please not just for Harry but Max aswel, maybe, just maybe jolley has has fired a warning shot across fentys bow about just how shoddily this club has been run and the fact MJ has a quite a knowledgeable depth of business acumen fenty has taken stock and listened because never would he have given such contracts to 2 young players before MJ walked into the building...

Dave Roberts has been tweeting that the next couple of years could see some real quality lads emerging through our Youth section.
I plan to try and get down to as many youth games on a Saturday morning that I can next season to see what we have coming through and to show my support for the Youth set up

Credit has to go to the board and JF for sanctioning this. We’re all very quick to point the finger when something goes wrong so only fair to back them on things like this. I’d love to see this followed up now with a 2/3 year deal for MJ, and really show some ambition at working towards a longer term project and longevity.

Also a very well done to Harry and Max on their new deals. They’ve both got the club at heart and have both spent time away from the club on loan and put in some proper graft to earn this. I think we’d all love to see 3 or 4 local young lads in the team who have that connection with the area and this is a huge step in that direction.

I really like the small initial steps this club is now starting to take. Appointing a bright young manager, giving local lads a chance and bringing new young talent in are really positive changes, I just hope that we as fans can realise that this isn’t going to turn us into an all conquering side over the summer, and this is a longer term journey.

Shall we wait and see how we start the season first. Yes, MJ deserve massive credit for turning around the mess left by Slade, but shall we see how we fare after he has had a transfer window to deal with and we see the fruits of the players brought in.

I'm all for giving MJ all the credit he deserves so far, but let's just wait and see how he fares bringing in the players for next season shall we.

I get your point Les and I suppose it gives some security if things don’t go well. But what if we don’t start well? By saying let’s not give him a longer term contract now I’m assuming that if we don’t start well you’d want a change? That’s kind of my point, im fed up of change now and would like to see a long term strategy. Also what is a bad start? I guess we’re at a point where nobody knows how we’ll get on next season, personally a mid table finish is progress enough for me as long as it’s clear that we’re “building something” (poor choice of phrase, I know).

It's all those posts by Ipswin, I think they've started to affect me.

No, seriously I do hope that MJ proves to be that appointment that we've all been waiting for for God knows how many years, the early signs are very promising but I'd like to see how MJ's team fare in the early part of next season before we start lauding him as The Messiah.

But it is that sort of shorttermism that has badly injured our club in the past.

It looks like we are doing what many wanted us to do. Encourage youngsters, be part of the community etc. Long term is what those things are about not the quick fix that you throw out after the first few weeks of the season.
It has to be the making of the clubs DNA not for the next few weeks or months but for years to come.
I am not expecting us to be challenging at the top of the table and would be quite happy if we stay up, play with the bravery of youth and give it a go.
We need this breath of fresh air to go on and on, whoever the manager is because IMO it is the only way for a club like Town to really develop and survive long term

It's not drivel it is called an opinion!

It is not to be confuse with wanting us to be top of the league but with those retained and signed so far, I suspect Promotion may well be beyond us.
Time will tell how we go but my point was about putting in foundations for years to come, not panicking if we don't start like an express train

Hopefully we will see Ahkeem Rose as the third youngster to come through next season, but after that is there anyone else we should be looking out for?

I would be quite happy if we stay up

Even if we are in the bottom three all season and stay up by drawing 0-0 at home to Morcambe in the last game?

Please don't be sillier than usual, I merely pointed out that you said you would be quite happy if we stayed up and staying up could entail another season just like the last, you wouldn't be happy with that surely?

We must have higher hopes than that if everyone's blind faith in Jolley is even half justified in fact if we are in the bottom three heading towards the end of the season will Jolley have to go the same way as Slade?

Midtable obscurity at least please

MJ is a clever fornicator for sure,

1 Secures a really good prospect
2 Makes the player feel really good by providing him security
3 Goes down well with the fans as we love to see "our own" flourish
4 Puts a piece of the jigsaw in place for building beyond one season
5 Says to any talented 14/15 year old sign for GTFC work hard, progress and you'll get a shot

Absolutely delighted for Harry as he run his bollox off to keep us up and it clearly means so much to him.

That ladies and gents is much more like it!!

It's not 'blind faith' though is it? He did an amazing job at the end of last season by an astute signing, tactical awareness and turning around several players we thought were useless. He took us from the bottom of the form table to second from top.  Not sure what more he could realistically have done in the circumstances.

So we have already seen some impressive results. What we have now is not blind faith but optimism based on what we have seen so far.

Great news. I wonder if there has been interest in him?

From what i have heard, yes. Maybe the 3 year deal was needed to secure his signature? Either way it's great news and Harry was very impressive toward the end of the season.

Which is why I was surprised that anyone would be happy if we stay up, I would have thought a bit more optimism than that is called for.

If we do struggle it will be because MJ has signed a lot of relatively untried youngsters great though that is for the future, (someone is looking a year or so down the line at last) We might just need the odd well travelled journeyman to play alongside the younger players.
