Was just going to suggest he'd take Nolan and Henderson as they're the only ones that look like they'd cut it in the Championship (Hendo definitely, Nolan maybe as a squad player).
It'd be an interesting move for Hurst. Ipswich have expectations and I wouldn't describe them as a big fish in a small pond.
If I were an Ipswich fan I'd think it a sensible appointment. Hurst will steady the ship, get the players working hard for each other... but it remains to be seen whether he can get them competing for the play-offs (or automatic promotion).

He will need plan b in that league as for big fish I'd say their lower end

They had just opened a new stand, for the size of the ground I found Portman Road impressive.

Be interesting to see how he copes with their expectation level. I doubt Ipswich would give him four seasons to get them promoted.

I was at that cup game where Whymark returned but went off injured. We were in one corner of the stand behind the goal. 8,000 Town fans there that day, and yes we lost 2 - 0.

Remember going to Portman Road in the 1980's. Think it was a night match? They needed a win to clinch promotion under George Burley(?) but Town ground out a 0-0 draw to put their celebrations on ice

Seem to remember it was 4-0, played em in the league no end of times. Usually lost there, and spanked them at home. Similar with Charlton, had some hidings there and dished some out at home. Seem to remember Clive scoring at Ipswich.

Hurst to Ipswich would be very interesting, especially as the Ipswich fans were so keen to get rid of Mick McCarthy because of his dull and predictable style of play.
Yes, Hurst ticks a lot of boxes (an awful lot in fact) for them. Whilst he was here we were a big fish in a small pond and had a budget that reflected our position, there or thereabouts, in the league every season. Whereas at Shrewsbury he proved he can do it on a comparative budget too, which is what he's likely to be required to do at Ipswich.
Again though, it's that predictability with him. Regardless of the fact they've ultimately come up short at the end, Hurst has worked wonders at Shrewsbury but every time I saw them it was the same predictability that frustrated so many when he was here. That endless floated ball from the back to the target man despite having an abundance of creative talent on the pitch, the predictable substitutions, the flogging of key players all season in every cup going which ultimately left players dead in the final sprint....
If/When he goes, I fully expect he'll want to take Henderson there too. But that will depend on what Bartosz Bialkowski does, he hasn't signed his new contract yet and with only a year to run it looks like he's got a few suitors lining him up. If Bialkowski stays, I can't see Henderson wanting to go as back up. A fee of £1million is what has been banded about for Henderson (on the assumption he doesn't sign a new deal with Man Utd), I'm not sure Ipswich will have that type of money anyway.
Nolan has been touted as a £5million plus player, now I don't think for a second think he'll go for anywhere near that figure but he'll be out of Ipswich's spending reach. Toto is probably the most likely to go there, Hurst loves him and he's had a really good season at the top end of League One. Is The Championship a step too far for him? Only one way to find out I guess.
Can't see Rodman or LJL stepping up another level. Rodman's had a decent season but LJL has hardly played. Rodman lacks a yard of pace to play at a higher level in my opinion.
Ipswich are a decent, well organised outfit which will probably appeal to Hurst as something solid to build on. If he gets a remotely decent budget to work with he could surprise a few more people with them, but as he goes up the levels his pool of favoured players will get smaller and smaller. His success is built on spirit and togetherness, which I like and badly missed here when he left. I do wonder how effective that can be at a higher level when the egos are bigger.

If I was an Ipswich Town fan I'd be very disappointed. It will be particularly galling for them when Jack Ross, who was linked strongly with the job, does so well at Sunderland.

PH did better with Shrewsbury in a short space of time than many thought including me but his strengths are also his weakness especially in big games. He will get Ipswich organised and top half but he will be coming up against far better players more often if he does well at Ipswich fair play to him.Personally have my doubts and see him a lower league Manager but make no mistake the guys earned this job through his time with GY and Shrews.

Henderson (if he can get him, the Ipswich owner is a tight illegitimate), Nolan and Toto I reckon
On reflection he'll only need Henderson if the current Ipswich keeper (a Polish international whose name I can neither spell or pronounce) gets sold to the Premiership (a number of Prem clubs are interested).

one other thing to remember. ph has now had 1.5 seasons in div 1 so has good experience of that level player-wise, plus we don't know what players he presently has who could make the step up. finally we all know that 1 thing ph does do is work vv hard and goes to loads of games to scout out potential targets. i don't think he will be found wanting in terms of player recruitment is the point im making

As he was at Shrews
I feel sorry for the Shrewsbury fans. OK they got 2 Wembley trips but they achieved nothing in the end apart from filling the coffers a bit. As for their budget, it was low compared to the 3 promoted sides which was the point I think the manager made. They had parachute payments and it showed in the end although a number of Shrews fans commented on the lack of ambition from the side in the last 10 or so league games. Next year the Shrews will need a new manager, most of a new side and still face three sides from the Championship with parachute budgets. They may lose one or two who are on contract but the stars of the side are on loan so they get no return on them. On the plus side they do have some cup money. At least one Shrews fan was not impressed with the way things have gone but I suppose you could say we did that with Boston. " This sounds more like a deal was struck weeks ago & Ipswich didn’t even make the official request themselves. I get the impression that Caldwell thought Hurst & Doig were the open/honest type but failed to be at the very last."

Living in Suffolk I like Ipswin only go to Portman Rd when Grimsby are playing there,
Scores I can remember won 1-0 Handyside
Drew 0-0
Drew 2-2 Boulding 2 2-0 up and let 2 in last 10 mins,
Lost 4-0
Might have been another one but can not remember, just came back to me lost 2-0 in the cup but was still living in Grimsby then.
Hurst will find their fans even more demanding than ours.

Five or six bad results and some clubs are very quick to fire managers. That's the environment managers have to operate in. Very few managers are shown any loyalty. So they can hardly complain when a manager choses to move on to a bigger club.
Three consecutive managers were sacked in the season immediately following winning the premiership. Mancini at City, Mourinho at Chelsea, Ranieri at Leicester. It's likely to happen with Conte too.
Afraid loyalty is in very short supply in football.

I lived in a village near Ipswich for a while and only went to Portman Road twice. I saw the debut of Sergei Baltacha who was the first Russian to play in England in 1989, he scored on his debut against Stoke. The other time was to see Status Quo, Joe Cocker and Rod Stewart! Don't know why I didn't see Town, maybe they didn't meet in the time I lived around there!

I work with an Ipswich fan and he's genuinely excited about PH poss being the new manager His words were along the lines of "anything better than McCarthy and delighted not a Sherwood, Redknapp appt but someone on the up"
Been to Ipswich once - hellish journey - hammered 4-0 - FA Cup I think

Seriously though, who gives two Figs about Hurst or Ipswich.
He definitely didn't give a hoot about us and couldn't wait to get away from here.
Again, he has walked away at the season with male private all
I am annoyed with myself for spending a minute writing this.
Didn't rate him when he was here and don't rate him now

Remember that 4-0 and Boncho Gentchev's hattrick. Sure I saw a win there at some point in the 90s. But the best was a 2-2 in the League. It was when goal music made it's horrible appearance. They went 2-0 up (each goal accompanied by 'I feel good') quite early. Home fans thinking it was game over. Then super-sub Livvo came on

| Through the door there came familiar laughter, I saw your face and heard you call my name. Oh my friend we're older but no wiser, For in our hearts the dreams are still the same. |

Quite a surprising comment from someone who uses another ex-manager's name as his moniker.
You seem obsessed with Hurst it's becoming boring as he was, Jolley is our future Hurst is the past ,move on.
