I am sure the ‘ board’ would have had to sanction the Macca deal. I guess there’ll never be any sort of admission about the past. But if JF remains in the background and gives MJ the tools to do the job (and he/they have already taken a big step).
Then just maybe we can still move forward together.

Because it’s not just a thread w@nking over the fact that Macca has signed. I’m as quick as any to criticise JF.  And personally I’d be happy to see him move on. But if this is a statement of things to come then things might not be as bad as we thought they would be.  So let’s hope it’s not a one off but the first of a few good signings.

Yeah, i agree there is a wider picture here. The club has stalled and stumbled repeatedly over the years and last season was another monumental fook up, on and off the pitch. There are many fans, such as myself and my brother, who are watching closely as to how the club reacts to almost going out of the league yet again, and are still drunk off at the way the fan are treated on top of that. I'm still in a major quandary over the purchase, or not, of a season ticket.

Agree with Civvy the board have sanctioned a 3 year deal for a very good standard lower league player coming up to his peak year`s it is good business and because of what he means to the fans good PR. I hope personally this is the start of a new dawn in terms of how things are done by the football club. Now go re-sign his mate Shaun Pearson and do us all a favour.

Signing Pearson back would be a real statement of let’s push for mid table this year ..... great lad for sure and good pro BUT we need better if we are to challenge and like others point out in other threads it appears Jolley wants quick athletic players

Could not agree more, absolute stalwart for us in non league and in imo that is where he's at his best, thus the reason when we let him go that's where he headed....we need a central defender with a bit of pace and power to get the ball forward quicker, time will tell but have faith in MJ getting exactly the sort of player he needs to move us the table playing proper football..

You and dapperz may have a point but arguably you need at least 3 CB`s in your squad and one of them needs to be a Pearson type who can stick his head in look how the Exeter CB handled Rhead.Ideally as you point out an Andy Todd type who can do it all is what we really need in first off that type of player personifies calmness and it spreads through the team.Like all fans I can`t wait to see who Jolley brings in and I am genuinely excited that he persuaded the board to give Macca 3 years that`s a real change of direction.

Unfortunately I don’t think the budget will stretch to replacing everyone with the attributes MJ wants but in Collins case it’s clear he offers something. Regarding Taylor at Exeter he stood up to rheads assaults physically and was quicker to most situations simply cos of pace , a good player imo

Unfortunately I think we have to accept that Pearson returning is a pipe-dream.

However, I think he would be a good signing.  When he got a chance in the side under Bignot/Slade he was, in my opinion and especially towards the end of his last season with us, our best defender.  Which is some going when you consider he was in a back four/five that consisted of Danny Collins and Danny Andrew.

He took time to adapt to life in the Conference and he took a little time to adapt to life in League Two, but he got there.  For all the critique of his lack of pace, I can't remember anyone ever doing him for legs.  His gait suggests he's an uncultured footballer but he's not that bad, far from it.  No, he's not Danny Collins on the ball but let's face it, Collins is a seasoned ex-Premiership defender with international caps under his belt.  But if Pearson was the rough to the smooth in a pairing, he isn't exactly sandpaper!  Pearson's primary role was to defend and shut the other side out, he was bloody good at that here!

The grass isn't always greener.  As we proved last summer with bringing in Karleigh Osborne and Nathan Clarke as replacements. Neither of whom were of the same standard.

You also can't put the price on a natural dressing room leader.

I wouldn’t mind SP being back at BP but I don’t think it will happen. He held his own in the first season back, good reader of the game although probably not quick enough to go much higher than this and as others have said, we do need someone with a bit of pace in the back 4 whether Collins resigns or not.

I would disagree for the reason we let him go though. Imo it was nothing to do with the fact that he is not capable of playing in league 2, it was all about slade wanting his buddy Clarke through the door and in his opinion he couldn’t have both whether that be due to budget or style. Clarke turned out to be a player with similar pace, but not able to read the game as well and had many many more big errors in him imo.

This in buckets Pearson played all heart and yes there are far more gifted footballers but sometimes sheer determination is required.

Me too, I am not sure if renewing my season ticket is akin to supporting the regime. We kept our grievances quiet for the main part after the organised protests against John Fenty for the good of the team and the position we were (once again) in. But as far as I am concerned John has had around 14 seasons to do something good. All he has delivered are six seasons in non league, two near relegations from the football league, one actual and unthinkable relegation to the Conference. No proper promotions. Only one half decent season. We see our best players contracts being allowed to run down. PR gaffes, censorship of media outlets, The Fishy was closed down at one point FFS! The clubs stature has shrunk to such a level we are now in the same bracket as Morcambe and the like. And people want to give him a chance!

Fenty out.

With you most of the way Vic ...but...promotion is promotion and what finer way to do it from a fans viewpoint than in a play off final ??
Albeit at our lowest level we had play offs and cup finals so more than one half decent season really.....but overall...yes...he shouldn't be allowed off the hook.

I think a lot of people still feel this way (including me). Certainly no absolution on my part.  As I said, at the moment it's just one gesture.  But I do believe it's one more than we would have got under Slade. All I am trying to say, is that if we are stuck with him then lets try and give him a little credit where due if he does finally get it right. It could hopefully  make the Club a more viable prospect for a take over. There's still a way to go with that one, but if it could happen it's a win win situation.

This is equivalent to holocaust denial! Tens of thousands were there to see the trophy lifted at Wembley and millions watched it on TV. We magically appeared in the division above the next season as well.

I know what you mean. Until we get a new ground though and the extra income it brings other clubs will continue to overtake us. If we stay at BP we will eventually get relegated again.

BP holds 9500. If we can find a way of filling it we will easily have a promotion pushing budget when you look at most crowds in this division.

All the extra revenue opportunities with new grounds that people talk about, come with a price: the cost of building the stadium. Gyms, conference facilities and training pitches are not free resources. So far no one has shown there is a business case.

I've not forgotten the past and what JF has or hasn't done, but I'm trying to look at the now and the future. It's looking much better of late so let's back the team as much as we can and show our passion and support. Not to JF but to the boys in black and white. None of this is about him and never will be, the fact this comment is about him isn't really its more of a plea to every to back the boys and get this club moving in the right direction. UTM

Agreed 100% I don't have any problems with JF he's a fan after all that's made many mistakes but loves the club just like you and I.  I'm not one to go into the details of JF reign and like you Lukeo its all about the team for me.

Exactly.

The most recent league one I can find was April 13th 2002 against Burnley ( 9,275 ). Regardless of what people might think our home gates , on average , were never as high as some seem to imagine. When you look at the averages over the season then the latest highest was 1990/91 at 7,237 and that was when BP had a capacity of 18,496.

But to be fair a lot of seats do get unused for health and safety or whatever so I'd say its just short of 9,000 the capacity.

When was the last 9000+ gate out of interest anyone

We get roughly the same amount of home supporters now as we did in the Championship playing very attractive football. We have averaged over 6000 once this century. We're never going attract many more people (other than away fans if we go up) unless we either massively reduce the admission fee, provide additional facilities, or the town's population mushrooms.

When was the last upper teens attendance? I think we had something like that v Spurs in the League Cup in the early 90s. Is that the last one?

It was probably around 16,000 when Newcastle came in 1993.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.
