Much as expected really. Anyone you'd have left out/brought in if you were picking the squad?

Goalkeepers: Jack Butland (Stoke), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Nick Pope (Burnley).

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Kyle Walker, John Stones (Manchester City), Harry Maguire (Leicester), Kieran Trippier, Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), Phil Jones, Ashley Young (Manchester United), Fabian Delph (Manchester City).

Midfielders: Eric Dier, Dele Alli (both Tottenham Hotspur), Jesse Lingard (Manchester United), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea).

Forwards: Jamie Vardy (Leicester), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City), Danny Welbeck (Arsenal) Harry Kane (Tottenham).

Standby: Tom Heaton, James Tarkowski (Burnley), Lewis Cook (Bournemouth), Jake Livermore (West Brom) and Adam Lallana (Liverpool).

Good to see Alexander-Arnold and Loftus-Cheek in there. I'd replace Welbeck with JJ Hooper though.

Also, I know he's only a standby, but Livermore?!

I expect to see us being beaten by a James Rodriguez strike in the last 16.

Looks heavy on defenders to me? Suppose Delph can play in midfield if needed, but that midfield looks threadbare to me. Loftus-Cheek doesn't have much experience of playing, never mind playing in the world's biggest tournament. Think i would have taken Shelvey and ditched a defender.

When i look at crucial areas of the squad, it doesn't look good enough to me. Central defence and central midfield looks vulnerable, but i'm not sure there are any better out there. If we get to the Belgium game needing something, i would be worried about our chances of progressing.

I’d have taken Wilshere, played 38 times this season which is the most for a long time and more than Ruben Loftus-Cheek has managed, and he’s played well in a struggling Arsenal side.

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

I would have taken lallana , I know he has been injured this season but he is supposed to be fit now . Gives you extra movement and he was player of the tournament for England last time out

I don't imagine too many teams will be exactly quaking in their boots after looking through that list of players.

My expectations are very low this time around so, who knows, maybe we'll do better than expected?

I think Southgate is eager to pick a young team to develop. Problem is, I don't think most of that list will ever develop into world-class players.

Hopefully, Kane isn't completely knackered this time around and Alli will do something more than commit a few sly fouls whilst attempting (and failing) to backheel/flick an outrageous pass through when simply controlling the ball is a better option. I wonder how many times Sterling will go on a promising run before shinning his shot hopelessly high and/or wide?

Delph and Welbeck wouldn't be near the squad for me. Shelvey and Llanna instead.

I don't mind Roy Keane making £60,000 a week. I was making the same when I was playing. The only difference was I was printing my own - Mickey Thomas

Shame Joe Gomez has had an op, then we could have left Cahill at home.

If Lallana's fit enough to be on standby, he'd be in my squad instead of Welbeck.

Big fan of Wilshere, but he's been either outstanding or poor this season, I'd have gambled by taking him as he's different to the rest, but I guess GS has gone for Delph's strength and reliability.

And I'd prefer Bertrand to Young.

Squad lacks a bit of class at centre half (Stones apart) and inventiveness in centre mid for me, but GS's ethos of team ethic over outstanding individuals will probably achieve a bit more than people would expect..

Whooahhh....who are we gonna turn to when we need a mistimed 20 yd sliding tackle if Dier isn't in the squad ?  Think on Golfer.

I would have taken both Wiltshire and Llana (as someone has said if he is fit enough to be on standby then he should be seen as fit enough to be in the main squad). Massive lack of creativity in that midfield which means that our main attacking options are either overlapping full backs, or hoping Alli does something clever and seeing as he hasn’t had a great season we are really clutching at straws with respect to goal scoring options.

it's probably the best squad we've sent out since 2006. But thats because we've sent absolutely dog excrement to the last two world cups.

It's says a lot about the academy structure that we don't have a single international class keeper, only Kyle Walker you would say has genuine international pedigree in our defence and we don't have a single world class midfielder ( maybe Alli will become one).

Why Delph or Young neither have been outstanding this year, would have liked Wilshire in the squad, not going to be an exciting quick passing team is it. Can we give Mo Salah a shave, change his name and give him a free passport.

Smalling is a better defender than Cahill or Jones for me, but always looks as though he's likely to trip over the ball when it's at his feet. Southgate wants us to pass the ball around at the back so those two get the nod. I wonder how many 'moments' Stones will have, assuming he ends up as a starter? Don't mind Maguire as he's decent on the ball but perhaps a little slow for top level international football.

bit overkill on the fullback area for me.  I'd have dropped Delph & Trippier  for Lallana & Shelvey

Trippier - RB
Alexander-Arnold - RB \ MF
Young - LB \ RB \ WG
Delph LB \ MF
Walker RB \ DF
Rose LB

Have to say I disagree about people saying Smalling over Jones or Cahill. Imo smalling is a liability as a defender, not only has he got a massive mistake in him, his only way of defending at a corner is to hold onto the opponent by his shirt. Not even got the intelligence to try and hide it. A clued up ref would likely give at least one penalty against him. How the hell he gets away with it in the premier league just shows you how poor the referees are in this country and how small their balls are.

To be fair, I don't mind Henderson at all. Underrated or maybe doesn't stand out because of the nature of his role in the team. Great engine and more than capable at winning the ball back quickly, which is an unsung art form in itself..

Crikey. I'm out of touch. I've never heard of any of the players underlined.

Not sure I'd be brave enough to pick a defender called Trippier. That's asking for trouble.

cant believe Cook and Livermore are on standby ahead of Shelvey, even Barkley, or Tom Davies.

Shocked he has taken Jones Young Delph and Rose; thought 2 of those would make it.  Would take Lallana instead of Rose.

Everyone is expecting us to do shite.....so there's no pressure this time....we're going to win it

Then again I also thought Town would be in safe hands under RS.

We can all say this player and that player should have gone, and pick fault with some of those chosen, but they are all much of a muchness really. We don't have many, if any, truly great players, so i think Southgate is going for youth and teamwork, hoping to build a side and a philosophy, instead of a team of "the best players". At least he is trying to get them to keep possession, rather than "just lump it to a big man" as we have done in the past. We actually looked not bad the last time we played, so it will be interesting to see how we fare in a tournament with Southgate at the helm. We can't do much worse than last time out.

You can’t be much of a football fan then, even if you don’t have sky you can’t fail to have heard of all of these players

On one hand players are excluded from the 23 with the reasoning that it must be on “merit”. Then we name Welbeck in the squad, I think I saw someone point out on Twitter Ramos has scored more goals in the last 10 years than him.

Plus Heston and Livermore on standby - yet Heston has been injured and has not played huge part of the season and Livermore has been poor for a very bad West Brom Side.

Delph has played 1 game this season in midfield and the rest as a left back (hardly keeps wilshere, shelvy, lalana out on merit). So don’t think you can consider him a midfielder.

Main concern I have is IMO there’s only Dier and Henderson who I’d consider as proper centre midfielders. If one of those gets injured we are in real trouble. We do look very weak centrally so I’d have definitely taken Wilshere. (Never thought I’d say I wished Milner was available still - been in good form this year)

I’d hazard a guess that lalana will end up going. Usually one player gets injured in the build up before team is confirmed.

That being said I’ve liked our squads in the recent passed and look how we’ve played so happy to give Southgate benefit of the doubt until proved otherwise.

All Town aren’t we

The thing with Welbeck is that he has a knack of scoring goals for England. Without checking, i reckon he will be the highest goalscorer for England among the squad. He usually plays well for the national side.

Yeah on looking you're right. 15 in 37 (Kane has 12 in 23). Only got 2 since 2014 though (although I'm guessing he's not played too many?)

I'd still take JJ Hooper instead though!

For the first time in my lifetime they travel to a major tournament with zero expectations on them from the press or the public.Arguably they have only one World Class player and he is unproven at that level (Kane) but Argentina 86 proved you can win a World Cup with such a squad. When you look at how the draws likely to pan out assuming England get through the group stages it would see them face the Germans and beat them nobody to fear.

Does anyone remember Sterling's ghost goal against Italy in the last world cup. I remember going crazy shouting 'we're going to win the world cup' before one of my friends pointed out it was a goal kick. I hope that doesnt happen again.
