Henderson - was far too good for us, and is too good for league 1
Toto - had his critics, but we've had no one better since he left
Nolan - joined and got stick instantly, and was incredible, and I will always remember that run forward in the last minute and wondering why the fu(k he wasn't going to the corner flag, Well the rest is history
Rodman - same as Toto, had his critics but had a wicked right foot and did nothing wrong
The shop - I loved the shop, he always give 100%, scored 20+ in one season which some forget, and scored against Rovers in the final
Jones - still gutted slade copulated this one up, we had a real player who wanted to play for us until slade arrived

All 6 played big parts in our past and hope they do well!

It'll be interesting to see how Hurst gets on in another play-off venture. Don't think we were ever convincing in the first legs - lost 1-0 home to Newport, drew 1-1 home to Gateshead, won 2-1 away at Eastleigh and lost 1-0 home to Braintree.

It'll be a tight affair as his teams are always set up to not lose rather than to win.

Sad to see that list. What a team we could have if we only knew how to retain players.

Ah Lump, what a wonderful player he was. If Jolley can find a striker of his quality this summer then we'll be in for a good season.

The usual extremes of opinions - thought LJL developed a lot with us. We got the most out of his relatively limited abilities and although he’d normally shank one great chance wide every game, he scored his fair share too.

Not seen a better target man/hold-up player than Gary Jones in recent times though. He was a very intelligent player- perhaps more so than I appreciated at the time. Looking back at the vids he always made the right pass/run/decision at the right time.

Fantastic goal from Nolan. Shrews have looked pretty assured so far in this.

One great save by Deano, great aggression by Toto, great pace from Rodman and a great goal by Nolan....ahh well!

Shrewsbury take a precious lead.......no away goals rule in the play-offs though.

Fair play to them. They’ve played well, absolutely cracking goal from Nolan.

Of all the players Town have allowed to slip through their fingers in recent years Nolan has to be up there as one of the biggest losses.

Involved in all three goals at Wembley, took the free kick for the second goal at Braintree to name just two instances.

Surely we could have offered him more than Chesterfield

Very good footballer, shite sense of fashion. Had flip flops and socks on when they were on the same flight as us last summer.

Nolan was offered a 3 year deal by a league one club. Doubt there was ever any chance of us keeping him.

Hurst is up against three very inexperienced managers in the play-offs; Paul Warne at Rotherham has about a season's worth of games under his belt whilst Bowyer and Daws are both just a few games into their respective managerial careers.

I don't think anyone in the game has more play-off experience than him in the last five or six years and I think he's learned a lot from his experience to date. The Braintree home leg aside (which was dire), Town were pretty impressive in their last two play-off campaigns and immensely unlucky not to go up first time round. It would be difficult to back against Shresbury after getting over this first, tricky hurdle.

Since Hurst left I've felt conflicted about Shrewsbury. On the one hand, pleased for the bloke who ultimately took Town back into the league and restored some pride in the club (not to mention a number of players who played significant roles, too), but on the other bitter about the absolute shit show we'd become in his absence. For the first time, I genuinely wish him nothing the best - and that, I feel, is just another symptom of Michael Jolley's steadying and stabalising effect in his short time at the club.

As for better target men, Jones, Livvo, Keef, Drinkell etc etc.

It'll be interesting to see how Hurst continues to perform when he can't keep picking up players he knows from years back.

I'm sure he keeps meeting (and working with) new ones, but sometimes a core crop can run dry.

He kept rebuilding Town's squad each season but always had the likes of McKeown, Pearson and Disley at its heart - and they were there still, even when he left for the Shrews.

He might come across as dour and snippy, which annoyed some of our fans, but he clearly gets the backing of his players. I don't know what he's like in the changing rooms but clearly he knows how to get the players playing for him.

Keeps doing it, so it's no fluke. It seems like you could give him any team in the land, give him a full season and he'll get them in and around the play-offs.

Well, 4 penalties according to Soccerbase. Not particularly close to 11.

Amazing how penalties apparently don't count if you don't like a player, isn't it? Has anybody told Mitch Rose he only scored 4 goals this season as the penalties including those three at the end don't count?

I don't think it's just coincidence that LJL has played in a higher division than us ever since he left BP.

To be fair, and whilst I agree with your first two lines, a few of us were calling for hm to be subbed off (never the best striker in my opinion and was hobbling around looking injured) when he won then scored that pen at Dartford. Don't know if it's just my mind re-writing history, but that seems to be roughly when he went on his scoring spree.

Fingers crossed they do it. Would be made up for hurst n our ex players.plus if shrews can do it then we can do it.....

Of course penalties count, but not really if you are measuring a players goal scoring prowess. He did have other qualities but there were times you’d wonder if he could even finish his dinner.

That Nolan goal was world class. Karl Robinson said post-game that he was looking for a defensive error or even a gap but just couldn't find any fault with what the Charlton lads did, just have to accept brilliance.

Of these six ex players now operating 40 places above Town, only Henderson had no critics - except maybe Hurst who never gave him a run in the side.

Jones was also rated by most - and a clear sign of Slade’s failings.  Recruited by Bignot but clearly didn’t want to play for Slade.


The Shop divided opinion like no other player in recent times.

I really think that Slade just coached by numbers and had no instinct for how the game was changing or any ability to adapt his plan.

No two ways about it, Slade handled/managed Jones to the extent that he no longer looked interested.

But Jones did nothing in the vast majority of games in his final six months with us to suggest he was getting on top of the defenders.  

Cracking player in there and you do wonder 'what if' regards how good he could have been had Slade got anywhere near the best out of him, but he's also 26-years-old and spent most of his career playing part-time football, no doubt whilst working a full-time job.  At that age, you would have hoped he had the sense to make the most of his second chance rather than spend half a season sulking like he did.

Tbf he wasn't setting the world alight before we had him. In Hurst he found a manager he wants to play for, who got the best out of him. Probably saw the writing on the wall that Hurst wanted out and that GTFC wouldn't offer him what he feels he's worth. Shows that he rejoined Hurst at Shrews when given the chance after a fairly mediocre first season in L1 and then played his socks off for another season under Hurst.

Regarding Jones, I thought he never looked properly fit when he was with us - puffing and blowing long before the end of the game. During his first season, I thought this was because he was coming out of non-league and the move to full-time might improve his fitness, but I don't think this changed much this season. He was a sulky sodomist in both seasons, mind.

Same could be said about the fitness of Rose until the last month or so of the season so perhaps we just weren't training them hard enough?

Think Bignot and Slade basically allowed the players to toss it off in training, JT cited this as a reason that Bignot was sacked and everyone has been speaking about how much more intense it has been since Jolley came. Maybe Jones, Osborne, Asante etc would have benefitted from a decent manager.

agree totally, especially if its true that slade spent v little time at our state of the art training complex. we all do it in our jobs, i.e. slacken off when the boss is away and footballers are no different - makes for an easy life doesn't it?
jolley turning up has destroyed that and people like rose who have obviously buckled down are already reaping the reqards

I was told by a very reliable source that discipline fell apart when Bignot arrived. Players turning up at random times and the actual training was very badly planned, if it was planned at all.
