Based on the long drawn out twitter goodbyes, so far we know that the following have left or not had contracts renewed:

DJ
Karleigh Osborne

No surprises so far.  DJ seemed like an exciting signing but Hooper has done more on the left wing in last few games then he ever achieved.

I think there was a decent L2 defender in Osborne but he and DJ pretty much summed up Towns season..a few moments of promise, lots of frustrating moments followed by lots of nothingness.
DJ was this seasons Kayden Jackson, good start, falls away, leaves for another club where he makes a good impact.

Jaiyesimi has a lot of ability but needs to apply it at the right time and come up with some end result. Too often, he went on good runs without picking out a final pass or getting a shot away on target. I know Norwich picked him up front non-league but wonder if he might have been better staying there for another year or two. Potential for the future and he always worked hard so I'll wish him well.

Osborne needs to be playing regularly as he looked very rusty in most of his appearances this season. I'd personally expect to see him playing in the division below next season where he could probably do a good job.

Worst thing Norwich did was give DJ a juicy, three year contract after a bright start with us. He went completely off the boil after that.

Just nick that off you mate with a bit of an edit.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Still not sure why DJ didn't get more of a chance in the first team.  If we were expecting the finished product then we probably need to revisit our expectations in the loan market.

Sometimes things came off for him, sometimes they didn't.  Same for Dembele, who just got more chances.  For both it's about giving them time to learn from their mistakes and coaching any bad habits out of them.

Not sure DJ ever went off the boil, he just went weeks without playing so was just looked a bit rusty.

They both suffer from the Sterling Head In Turf Syndrome. Pep has spent months trying to cure Sterling and has still not done it 100%. Both these lads have the same problem, they do not look up to pick a pass until they already have the ball. DJ especially needs this coaching out or he will just get released early from Norwich.

Having said that, Dembele put in some good crosses at times but the strikers were crap at timing a run in the box.

I thought Mills might have been kept on as he is versatile but there is a rumour he is sorted elsewhere already. A bit surprised Woolford has been offered terms though (basing that over the season).

So with Mich Rose, JJ Hooper and Cardwell already contracted, it means that with the exception of Clarke, the team MJ has selected for the last three games are all staying.

Given how they ended the season I think that's a pretty good start.

If he now brings in several more decent players we will have a competitive squad.  So it's not as if we are starting from square one.

I wonder if MJ studies the fishy!!

Apart from maybe Mills (who someone mentioned was looking to leave anyway) and maybe Ben Davies having another year, he has got it pretty much as we have all been suggesting.

I suspect that Davies was one of the higher earners due to his previous clubs and experience so maybe that was also taken into consideration.

As with others, I would say the list is about right. Just wish all the best for all of those that are leaving. The bottom line in that after 30th june they are unemployed, never a nice position to be in. Hopefully they all get sorted out with new clubs and no one comes back to haunt us!!

Retained list now published.  Together will players under contract, the squad currently looks like this:

McKeown

Fox
Collins
Hall-Johnson
Dixon

Summerfield
Woolford
Dembele
Wright
Clifton
Mitch Rose
Sam Kelly

Cardwell
Hooper
Akheem Rose

So 15 players in total.  It shows how bloated the squad had become that 18 players were released or returned to parent clubs.

From this 15, you can more or less make up an 'ok' team.  It means that MJ should be able to spend the summer focusing on finding 6-8 quality additions, rather than re-build a whole squad from scratch.

Happy with Collins staying in paticular as i can see him taking a coaching role aswell, making a partnership like hurst did with Doig who was originally a player of course

Hall-Johnson is good and still young

mills and killip being released and woolford retained were the ones that stood out for me.
Having said that i don't think mills is a good enough passer - he reminds me of bradley wood in that respect.
anyone know where he's going?
wonder what he's got planned for Woolford, as i really can't see a midfield of clifton, rose, woolford and summerfield being a  promtoion chasing midfield

Surprised people questioning Woolford. He's been absolutely fantastic under Jolley.

Seems a sensible list to me. Focus budget in the priority areas - new CB, new wingers and STRIKERS!!!

Everyone also assuming that those offered contracts will stay and be first choice. Wouldn't be surprised if Woolford, Collins and Summerfield have been offered reduced terms.

Bit surprised about Woolford being retained as it means that four midfield places in the squad are already taken up..

No surprises for me elsewhere. He was always going to keep one right back and look to improve that position with someone better than Davies or Mills.

Offload Kelly and Dixon (need a better alternative than Dixon for Fox) and I think we've got a strongish lean base with decent scope to improve in all positions..

Well done MJ, gives me even more confidence in him..

Edit  Fully expect Vernam to be in a Town shirt next season..

I don’t know why they call it a ‘retained list’ surely they only become retained if they agree to the new deals. Shouldn’t it be called the released list?

Agree with MJ’s decisions though.

do you really think he's been fantastic? thought he had an awful first half at fgr and wasn't much better at cov. don't want to be cruel but in the games he's played under jolley i've only thought of him as a slight improvement upon berrett (berrett a 4/10 man, woolford a 5.5/10 man , if that makes sense!)

Didn’t realise quite how many players we had until seeing this list. Really really poor recruitment last year and January.

The offered new deal/ already to be here already looks much younger!

Hopefully all that have had deals offered accept, certainly not a given.

Would like to see Vernam return next term. Looked a real handful in the games I saw him.

I'm sure we'd let Dixon go if someone else wanted him but no need to make any moves to get rid. Fox will be first choice and Dixon is an adequate back up if needed.

Kelly is a bit different as he's so far down the midfield pecking order I can't see him ever playing.

Assume Clements will go too and Kelly and Dixon will have contract ended by mutual consent or paid up.

Like others only ones disappointed about is Zac Mills going and Woolford offered new deal. Also sad to see Davies go but hes getting too old now.

Like the fact that Jolley is sticking with the youngsters Clifton, Wright, Akeem Rose and Dembele and we should have scope to bring in around 10 players maybe more if some dont agree contract renewal.

Gonna be a busy and exciting summer

Surprised by Mills as, expecting a smaller squad, he offers excellent versatility across the back.  He wasn't too shabby in midfield either.  As others have said though, I suspect he's sorted elsewhere so little point in offering him a deal.

Woolford's an interesting one.  Very good under Jolley in that central role but as forza points out that potentially leaves us with a midfield of Rose, Summerfield, Clifton and Woolford.  Also Woolford was a lot better in a 3-man midfield as it helped hide his lack of pace (he's not alone in that one either), I wonder if that's part of the plan for next season to go with lots energy and pace in the front three.  I suppose Fox and Hall-Johnson are energetic from full-back too it would make sense.

Have to agree with a lot of that list. Would’ve liked to see Mills retained though.

Few jibes about Dixon and Kelly. I think all the squad should start with a clean slate next season. It may be that these players will feature and find form.

Surprised and disappointed about Mills and sorry Killip is going, the lad hasn't had much of a chance but I thought he did quite well when called on.

Appreciate he would be a permanent bench warmer again if he'd been kept but then whoever is brought in as No2 keeper will be in the same position so may as well have kept Killip.

Liked the lad tho' as he was a youngster and showed promise. Surely we won't be relying on Warrington again FFS!

Jesus!  Considering we had him on trial and then couldn't agree terms, what was he asking for first time round??

Added to the rumoured £3k a week we were contributing towards Matt's wage, Slade proper screwed us over with his recruitment!

Pleased with all of that. Would now like to see a large percentage of the remaining budget spent on a centre back and a striker.

Seems to always be our way recently. Say we have a tight budget but blow it all on a huge squad. Must be plenty of room for a squad with good ability if we don’t have nearly twice the number of players we need.

Plus the young lads adding the cover/ extra numbers and pushing for first team places.

Just as a point to add, there's only Clifton and Wright who can be classed as home-grown - as per the requirement this season to have at least one in the 18-man squad or lose a place on the bench.

I thought the club usually announce if any of the youth team lads have got professional deals at the same time as the retained list, but there could be a couple more added to the squad if not.

No alarms and no surprises as the song goes. I think you need a nucleus of experienced players, like Woolford and Collins, if you are going to bring the age of the squad down. I expect us to be raiding some under 23's squads for signings/season long loans. Think we need at least 1 experienced striker, with some sort of track record behind him. We've seen the bother you can get in if you don't have a regular scorer.

Would like to see us try and get shot of Kelly and Dixon and then try and sign 8-9 new players which would leave us with a squad of 20-21 players. Same budget, just on much better players but 10 fewer of them.

Definitely on the striker front.  We can't go into the season with just Cardwell, Hooper and Rose as our attacking options, Jolley may well see Hooper as a winger anyway.  I would imagine it'll be a relatively experienced striker coming in.

If anyone seriously believes we're paying Dixon 2.5k a week and 'contributing' 3k a week to Matt, they need to give their heads a wobble.

As said previously I believe Jolley will look to try and get Vernam back, he seemed to be really impressed with him before he got injured.

Secondly really pleased that Ahkeem Rose will get another shot at it (pardon the pun) next season. Again when asked to comment Jolley seemed to be impressed by what he'd seen in training from him.

Mid looks full already but i think we need some  more quality

Need 2 strikers. one being a good support to link play.

we do have some reasonably young players that could improve dramatically in hall-johnson, clifton, wright , rose, cardwell, Akheem. even hooper to some extent.

I think next seasons surprise will be mitch rose though, think he has had a better season than summerfields first though and can kick on in the same vain as he did.

Slightly suprosed Mills wasn't offered a deal thoughtn he's been one of our better players these last 2 seasons and I thought Killip might of been offered a contract as Macca's understudy

Looks to have assessed the players realistically for next year potential and what he can get from them.

Few surprises and with careful additions made should have a better season.

We await the resignings to happen then await the new surprises !!

It honestly wouldn't surprise me, certainly in Dixon's case. If I recall we were basically desperate to sign a left-back and Dixon's 'pedigree' (i.e. former recent Championship level player & he'd played for Scotland a few times) along with him and his agent having a load of leverage of us could easily have led to Slade offering him far too much. I mean look at this link, his agent went to the press to shower Slade in praise after getting the deal signed. I doubt that would have happened if he hadn't done us over in negotiations - https://www.grimsbytelegraph.c.....y-agents-what-401978

I'd be happy with a wicket keeper / batsman and a finger spinner who could produce a fizzing Doozra. A decent scrum half and a hooker, and we'd certainly baffle the opposition manager and his pre match tactics.

They will have been made offers. It is up to the players to decide whether to sign. One or two may not if they get better offers elsewhere. Not necessary money but location might play a part.

No to Jackson for me. Into his thirties, on the way down, picking up injuries. Would like somebody on the way up from the Conference or someone who's scored goals in L2 last season and now out of contract.

Taking of contracts, what about Paul Wilkinson. Presume he's on a 6 month rolling one. Has he done enough to prove he's worth keeping. Dembele certainly needs quality coaching to getting him to the level his potential has shown. Interested to know what MJ thinks of PW and whether he wants someone else in for the number 2 job.

Overall, not much to grumble about
He must rate Akheem Rose!

Mills gone backwards IMO - but he may have got something elsewhere

Only 8-10 players needed now I would think (providing we start with 14... if my maths are correct

Goalie, 2 central defenders, right back, 2/3 midfielders, 2/3 strikers... about right??

Woolford looked great v Notts County - can't comment on away games cos didn't go, but clearly MJ found a role for him

If MJ gets squad together with a bit of cash to spare the club might pay off Dixon, Kelly??

Exciting summer ahead

Taking of contracts, what about Paul Wilkinson. Presume he's on a 6 month rolling one. Has he done enough to prove he's worth keeping. Dembele certainly needs quality coaching to getting him to the level his potential has shown. Interested to know what MJ thinks of PW and whether he wants someone else in for the number 2 job.

Neither Wilkinson nor Slade were on a 6 months rolling contract no matter what the powers above wanted us to believe

I think in an ideal world i would have reversed the decisions on Mills and Woolford but otherwise ok....we are stuck with some that i wouldnt particularly want to keep but hey ho....if you look at the position now there is potentially 15 players there already...that would include Wright A Rose and Clifton ...so 12 senior players...the 8 maybe 9 players coming in will need to be of some decent quality to pep it up.

I’d consider Clifton to be a fully fledged senior player now, personally, I think he’s earned the right.

To pay their contracts off I don't think you would see much change from £150,000 . That would come off the playing budget, which is money that could be better spent on one quality player. Dixon would make a passable back-up to Fox and who knows, maybe Jolley can work on Kelly and find a position that suits him, much like he has with Woolford.

Pretty pleased with that and think Mills is one of those players who divide opinion but his major weakness is going forward where his distribution and crosses leave a lot to be desired. However, IMO is very good defensively but do like the look and potential of Hall-Johnson.

In respect of the midfield that 4 has done reasonably well in those last few games but feel at least two of them will be on the bench but that’s fine as all can do a reasonable job.

Bit surprised at Killip release given he performed ok when required and very young for a keeper but maybe MJ has a better option on the way.

Big change will be our strike force and hopefully next season we will have one, think league 2 requires pace, muscle, height all the things Matt has but his sum of the parts does not add up to a striker. Add in a Doidge/ Dennis type finisher and we are on our way😄😄

As well as Woolford has played recently he is still a liability when out of possesion and regularly lets other midfielders get behind him after they lay the ball off and go for the return, Happens regularly at throw ins in our half. Surprised Mills is going but if he has already said he has something lined up why bother offering anything.

Surely that money is already in the playing budget as they have one year left and so we are budgeting them to be here taking a wage anyway. If we could agree a mutual termination at 50% the initial outlay would be £75k but we would save £75k too.

Slightly suprosed Mills wasn't offered a deal thoughtn he's been one of our better players these last 2 seasons and I thought Killip might of been offered a contract as Macca's understudy

I said that - and got red crosses for it! Can't see a better keeper than Killip coming in if he knows he's not going to play, seems silly to let him go and recruit another bench warmer.

Of course the other alternative is that we manage to farm them out on a season's loan, much like Blackpool did with matt.still contracted but not wanted.

Absolutely no source. But just a personal thought as to why they’ve let Killip go.

Killip goes without a replacement and that pays for Maccas improved contract.

As far as I am aware, as an emergency position we can get a keeper on loan at any time should Macca get injured. As long as the loanee is not significantly better !!

Great suggestion- Macca pulls a hamstring taking a goal kick and Jolley and Wilko get on their mobiles quick as a flash... hold on ref we re just in for an emergency loan...

Re Woolford; we don’t know what terms we have offered or what he’s on already - he signed quite late so obviously didn’t have his pick of teams to push his fee up. Would be quite happy having him around as an experienced pro for the right money. Also been a different player under Jolley.

I think Jolley got this spot on - only possible contentious one is Mills.

Whilst I appreciate many may want a complete turn around in the squad, this isnt always the best thing. If all sign we have a good nucleus there to be added to with some quality additions.

MJ used the expression Evolution not revolution before and this is what we appear to be getting.

Its even worse when you think we had Fox on trial and let him go, only to sign Dixon who is probably on at least twice as much as Fox

Maybe Killip hasn't been offered a deal because he wants to be a first choice somewhere.

Ollie Battersby in the youth team left a couple of years ago to play with Sheff Utd, only to rejoin Town last year.  I wonder if there are plans to promote him?  It is certainly an easy way of hitting the quota of homegrown players on the bench!

Not sure about the 4 years or the 138k, but my instinct is still screaming at me that both RS and PW were not on six month rolling contracts. My educated guess would be 2 and a bit years..Something still doesn't feel right about it all, foisting PW on MJ if he's only on a six month rolling and also clinging onto RS for dear life, but I guess I'm going to have to believe open and honest John even though he was tickled pink to get his men..

So are we saying that Slade is the only manager in recent times who has been given more than the standard 6 months rolling contract? Slade is a complete dobber and gets handed a better contract than Hurst and Jolley. Sounds about right.

Well we just don't know do we Ginny because Mr Fenty refused to answer the question posed by Pete. Which is suspicious because he's only too willing to say other managers have been on/are on 6 month rolling contracts.

I think like most there are no surprises, feel a bot for Mills as I reckon he had a good start under Hurst and went backwards under Bignot & Slade's stupidity, but he is not great at retaining possession.

Woolford I think has been a bit lucky but certainly looked better as he got fitter and moved into a more central role, after a full pre season I'm optimistic he can make a difference.

So a few questions remain,

- How many of the lads offered deals will sign?

- If any of them don't has MJ got a back up plan.

- How quickly can we pull a squad together? "last minute.com" has led to a lack of quality in the last 2 seasons.

Good luck to Mills.

A few posters say that he has gone backwards.  Ironic when he is good at getting forwards.  His crosses are are often poor though, which gives possession to the opposition.  Mills is then stranded out of position.  Any attack could then be targetted down his side and put us under threat.  I think best for both parties if he moves on to a new club.

The other decisions on players also look good.  There appears to be good reasons behind each decision.

i reckon we need

1 keeper
1 right back
3 central defenders

Mid looks full already but i think we need some  more quality

Need 2 strikers. one being a good support to link play.

we do have some reasonably young players that could improve dramatically in hall-johnson, clifton, wright , rose, cardwell, Akheem. even hooper to some extent.

I think next seasons surprise will be mitch rose though, think he has had a better season than summerfields first though and can kick on in the same vain as he did.

Bye Bye Berret, never want to put a player down but the most ineffectual player i have seen in some time.

I'd be happy with a wicket keeper / batsman and a finger spinner who could produce a fizzing Doozra. A decent scrum half and a hooker, and we'd certainly baffle the opposition manager and his pre match tactics.

I'd go for Derek Underwood up front - he would finish any team off. Boycott as the tidy sweeper at the back with real hardcase second row enforcer type alongside him - someone with a real mean stare that will "manage" the ref - Martin Johnson or Lawrie Dallaglio. We need an elegant playmaker in midfield - I'd go for Gower - leftie as well - always an advantage. Then we need a box to box, gobby, little twaty sort of player - always annoying the oppo and getting them booked / sent off - Oz Healey...

Well we just don't know do we Ginny because Mr Fenty refused to answer the question posed by Pete. Which is suspicious because he's only too willing to say other managers have been on/are on 6 month rolling contracts.

I think it was said that Slade was on a rolling contract, but the length of contract was not specified. Though i could be imagining that.

I wouldn't say he has been fantastic by any stretch of the imagination. He has been cack for most of the season, yes he had improved but was poor against FGR, can't tackle and often gets caught in possession.

I would love to be proved wrong but looks a barmy decision to me.

Oh. Never understood why JF wouldn't give Pete a straight answer.

No to Jackson for me. Into his thirties, on the way down, picking up injuries. Would like somebody on the way up from the Conference or someone who's scored goals in L2 last season and now out of contract.

If we could....but I think it unlikely any such player exists!

Teams retain goalscorers,, normally.

Wouldnt surprise me to see more leave.
Contract paid up on Kelly and Dixon on mutual as he must know Fox will be ahead of him for LB.
Also Clements will be released.

I said that - and got red crosses for it! Can't see a better keeper than Killip coming in if he knows he's not going to play, seems silly to let him go and recruit another bench warmer.

Macca if he stays,  needs a good experienced keeper challenging him every week for his place rather than a rookie warming the bench for a just in case injury etc

Previous managers seem to have held the beleif that paying 2 experienced keepers was a waste of a wage and with budget limited (as they always are) they think that money is better spent elsewhere. Time will tell if MJ has thoughts on a similar lines?

Couldn't agree less, Macca as we know will throw his dummy out if he is dropped for the other keeper and anyway why would a 'good experienced keeper' come just to warm the bench which he almost certainly would be doing. We can't afford to have two 'first choice' keepers, Killip would have been ideal.

Some offered deals might prefer to be nearer home if they can get an offer elsewhere. Could be a factor.
