Barnet fail to win either of their final 2 matches

Or

We beat either of Notts County or FGR

Or

We draw against both Notts County and FGR

Or

Morcambe lose against both Cambridge Utd and Coventry

Or

We get 1 point in our remaining 2 games and Morecambe get 1 point from Cambridge and Coventry

Looking good!

Don't we just need to get more points than Barnet or Morecambe?

The other is against Barnet who need to win both their games so the above is correct

Morecambe have drawn 8/21 home games.  I think they could quite well draw v Cambridge on Tuesday and Barnet.

For what it's worth, I reckon we'll draw at home v Notts County.

This is interesting to look at.  Note how appalling our home record is.

I may be wrong, but I think it's very unlikely we'll go down now. One more point will do it.

Strange thing with Morecambe, could be dark horses for the drop. Crept into the bottom 3 while most people focussed on us, FGR, Barnet and Chesterfield.
Very out of form but their habit of drawing games might just keep them out of it.

I am hoping Cambridge can manage a win at Morecombe on Tuesday

That will mean their match against Barnet could decide who goes down with Chesterfield,

Notts Counfy are in the play offs so  they might either rest a few players or some will not want to get injured before the play off games,

For that reason and because Jolley has got us organised I am predicting another 1-0 win

So I feel a lot better now its just not the 3 of us Morecombe make 4.

Could be....  but then again maybe Chesterfield could well be motivated to take them down with them?

There'll be no pressure on the Spireites so they shouldn't be nervy and who knows how it will pan out.

Stranger things have happened

It may even come down to a reversal of the 2010 last day, i.e. Barnet needing to win and hope that we lose.

If Cambridge win on Tuesday we are almost home and dry, because I can't see Morecombe beating Coventry on the last day, so the Morecombe Barnet game becomes a winner take all match.

Barnet's game v Chesterfield is not "a given".  No game is.  Chesterfield players will want to be kept on and also they may play better now the pressure is off them.

I think it will all be sorted next Saturday.  Draws.

Terrible though Chesterfield have been recently, the only team they did beat was Notts County.

So we must have a chance against them,

There is still some work to do.

If Morecombe win on Tuesday they are safe.

That leaves us and Barnet to fight it out. If Barnet win both their games (against one team who are safe, and one team who are already down) and we draw one and lose one we would be down on goal difference wouldn't we?

So if Morecombe win on Tuesday we need a win or two draws to be safe. It would be awful needing a point on the last day.

That's not what Lew's Lover said though - let's hope they don't win...! If they draw they are not safe from Barnet that is the key thing. Two draws for Morecambe in their next two games and we are safe...

If Morecambe win on Tuesday then we are still fretting big time because we need two points to be safe. I can't see Barnet failing to beat Chesterfield, Martin Allen has got them scoring goals and we really need Morecambe scrapping with them next Saturday. Beating Notts is a massive ask, and Forest Green would love to send us down!

If they saw that interview with their director the other day, they might not want to stay on with the prospect of the budget being taken down from £2.5m to £1m.

Latest relegation odds are looking good for us;

Chesterfield - closed book
Barnet - 1/12
Morecambe - 10-1
Grimsby - 14-1
Vgr- 50-1

Not long ago we were around evens (or worse) to go down.

Jolley has done a great job steadying the ship and grinding out the results.

We need Cambridge not to lose on Tuesday night at Morecombe otherwise Barnet's last 2 games will be versus sides with nothing to play for.

So far so good but I'm not celebrating yet!
I'll breathe a lot more easily if Cambridge beat Morecambe on Tuesday because then they are really in the mix. A win or draw for them in their following game against Barnet and we're safe whilst a worst case scenario of defeat in that game would leave them needing at least a draw in their tough looking last game away to Coventry if we were to lose our last 2.. A shame Chesterfield didn't get at least a draw today or Forest Green would have been in the mire too.

There are more ways to stay up than there are to go down now. A couple of games ago it was the opposite.

The only thing I can say is it would hurt a lot more if we went down now. Hartlepool thought they had escaped last year and the way they ended up relegated must have been gut-wrenching. People would have been jumping off high buildings if there were any in Hartlepool.

I'm still not counting my chickens. I thought before last Saturday that 4 points would be enough if 3 came against Barnet. We got the four points, which is great, but i just can't stop thinking we missed a great opportunity to see off the Barnet threat. We could have been safe tonight. I'm used to disappointment with Town and it would be the ultimate slap in the chops if we got this close, where you can almost touch the finish line, only to have it snatched away in the last game. I'm praying we are safe this time next week, as i have been dreading the last game for some time. Going there needing a result would be horrific. Barnet are going to be well up for this with the form they are in now and the opposition they have left. Can we beat Notts and put it to bed? Tough task as they are chasing automatic and have also hit form after a dodgy spell.

Mind you, i didn't think we would win at Swindon, so we are better off than we were this morning with one game less to play.

I hope we make through our own efforts by getting the two points we need, rather than because Barnet or Morecombe hand it to us on a plate. But I'll be happy either way.

There is still a strong chance we may go down and if we do it will be because we didn't beat Barnet.

We have all been saying for months that the two home games against Chesterfield and Barnet would largely determine our fate, and they may well end up doing so. I saw several comments to the effect that we wouldn't deserve to stay up if we couldn't win those games. If Barnet do pip us to the post it will be because they would have put together five wins in seven games. You would have to say that they would deserve it if they pulled that off. We could have no complaints. It was there on  plate for us to kill Barnet off, but we were just not good enough.

That said, Jolley deserves praise for turning our form around with this squad. I look forward to seeing him building a really good squad next season whichever league we are in.

Tuesday night is important, Morecambe v Cambridge, who have nothing to play for, but are a fair side. Then Saturday is Morecambe v Barnet  and their final game is Coventry away. I was worried in the night about us going down but I now feel it will be one of those 2.

Lots of us have been nervously jabbering on this thread saying more or less the same thing - Tuesday night is a massive night for us. At those odds I think a fiver on Morecambe is worth a punt. Taking Barnet to beat Chesterfield as a given, its a 10-1 for three match combo - Morecambe to do no better than get one point from games at home to Camb and away to Cov, and to lose at home to Barnet. The other option of course is to lay Barnet on Betfair, because that brings us into the bet...!

Cambridge beat Cheltenham 4-3 and are certainly not on holiday just yet.   We definitely need Cambridge to win and i can see the fight being between Barnet and Morecambe.

Morecambe have nearly been relegated in past few seasons or it feels like that anyway.  If Morecambe get relegated it will take them an age to get back.

I knew town would win yesterday 😁

The key game is Morecombe Cambridge we need a Cambridge win or draw minimum, that keeps the shrimpers firmly in the excrement and hopefully means the Saturday game with Barnet plays out to a feisty draw

Really need Morecambe to lose on Tuesday, lots of combinations possible, but if Coventry get a result against Lincoln on Tuesday they could rest players against Morecambe, as they'll already be in the play-offs....at the end of the day it's in our own hands, so let's just get the job done on Saturday.

It does if its a single point to Barnet you are talking about - thats all thats needed to keep us safe, a draw with Morecambe is favourite and that'll do it

I really hope FGR get a point on Tuesday. Then they are safe. The less they have to play for the better, because a win at their place is still a get out of jail card for us whatever happens next Saturday. Hope it doesn't come to that.

After yesterday's win, Barnet fans must be thinking that we are more than capable of getting a result at FGR. So for them I imagine its catching Morecambe that is their best hope of staying up.

Should Morecambe win on Tuesday, Barnet might well feel that they are down already.

I really hope FGR get a point on Tuesday. Then they are safe. The less they have to play for the better, because a win at their place is still a get out of jail card for us whatever happens next Saturday. Hope it doesn't come to that.

Both Yeovil and fgr can confirm safety with a draw. Worth a flutter as that's very likely to be the result.

I think this is the time to remember the Serenity prayer.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

We have no effect on games played elsewhere so don't worry about them.
What we can do is create the right atmosphere, get right behind the club, team and management, support them positively and don't get on their backs if things start to go awry.
Together we can get out of this mess.

<'(((((<

When I was a little boy
I asked my daddy what would i be
would I be United, would i be Leeds
Here's what he said to me

Oh Grimsby Grimsby
Whatever will be will be
You'll follow then faithfully
Oh Grimsby Grimsby

Tell me Mam me Mam
I dont want no tea no tea
I'm watching the Grimsby
Tell me Mam me mam

Do you really think that if FGR are safe and we need to win they will just role over and hand it to us?

Their Chairman will want to send us down if they can - the team will be fully committed to doing that...

Notts are a bit erratic, they had a good result on Saturday but Chesterfield turned them over comfortably 4 weeks ago. We need to get the job done on Saturday.

No. I didn't say that.

I just think that it will be slightly easier for us if FGR are not fighting for their survival too.

Really? What makes you think that? Just because we beat them in a play off final two years ago?

He's a businessman. I am, sure that if he had a preference, which I doubt he does, he would probably choose Barnet or Morecambe to drop as they bring smaller revenue with them on match days.

Surely the opposite could happen, they would be under no pressure and may well play much better than they have been.

You need to stop clutching at straws and hope that it doesn't come down to that day.

In his day job, yes. FGR are his subbuteo set, he will like to win - to beat one of the bigger boys' with over 120 years of longer history and send us back to the "graveyard" as he called it - will make his tackle seem so much bigger...

Well applying that logic you could say the same about Chesterfield at Barnet.

It's not clutching at straws to ponder the various permutations. Posters on this forum have been doing so for weeks.

If your not really interested in in these what if's, you're about the only one on this site who isn't

I seriously doubt he could give a knats balls about it. He's probably more concerned with making sure his vegan burgers have enough halloumi fries to go with them.

Here's the recipe......

Mix together 75g plain flour and 3 tbsp za'atar. Toss the fries in the flour mixture, making sure they are coated completely. Heat oil to 180C or until a piece of bread browns in 20 seconds. Fry the halloumi in batches for 2-3 mins until golden brown and crispy.

In 15 games against the current top 8 we’ve won only once (Accrington away) and have lost 10 of them. Without detracting from the obvious and commendable progress under Michael Jolley our two recent wins have come against the league’s worst time and the team bottom of the form table.

Notts County, with an automatic place to play for and three wins on the bounce under their belt will be a completely different proposition. If we are to win, we’re probably going to have to put in the best performance of our season so far (though of course that’s still a pretty low benchmark to beat).

As someone else posted though, a solitary point isn’t of much value to us so we may as well go out there on the front foot. The crowd will certainly be behind them.

We need 2 points to be safe regardless of other results so if we can get one point against County so be it. That would mean we obviously only need a draw at FGR if required which is better than having to go for the win there.

On the other hand they looked nothing special at Meadow Lane - we were good value for the draw, in spite of the manager at the time, and they've had some notable slip-ups - losing at both of the bottom two.

The interesting, and difficult, question is if we're drawing with 5-10 minutes to go against Notts, do we go for the winner?

Unless I've figured this out incorrectly - Barnet must beat Morecambe on Saturday, at Morecambe. If they fail to win we are safe whatever our score.

If we beat Notts county, we are safe, whatever Barnet's result.

If Barnet win and we lose or draw, we'll go into the final game away at FGR needing to win to guarantee safety, or at least to match Barnet's result at home to Chesterfield.

If Morecambe lose tomorrow, and then lose to Barnet, we will not need anything if they lose at Coventry as well. God its complicated, even with only a couple of games to go!

I thought if we draw on Sat we would only need a draw at FGR ?

A defeat for Morecambe tomorrow changes the dynamic considerably in our favour. With two games left for each team, there are still loads of permutations however in terms of simple probability it’s only a very small % that can send us down. Effectively, it would take:

- Barnet to beat Morecambe
- Town to lose or draw against Notts County
- Barnet to beat Chesterfield
- Morecambe to better our result on the final day by a point if we lose against County or two points if we draw

Far stranger things have happened in football but there are quite a few planets which will need to align there in order for us to be relegated.

Should Morecambe win tomorrow night the probability of us going down rises significantly, however of all the teams who can still drop our set of circumstances is the one I’d choose. All will be marginally clearer this time tomorrow.

Don't forget the fact that two draws for us keeps us up at the expense of Barnet. So all of the above items in your list could occur and we could still survive!

I wonder if Rob could calculate the odds of all of that happening?

You are indeed correct. Maths isn’t really my strong suit but I make it that there are 60 possible scenarios, of which 4 would see us go down. I could be slightly out with that, but that would mean a roughly 6.5% chance of relegation which I’d have taken at this stage a few weeks ago.

Happy for someone more academic than I to correct me however.

Edit: this would be true only if Morecambe lose tomorrow.

Slightly more complex than that because the probability of each outcome is not identical, but Rob normally has all this stuff at his fingertips so can tell us the true odds.

I suggest he doesn't bother until this time tomorrow though.......

That should make me feel a whole lot calmer but unfortunately it doesn't! Thanks for trying though!

Sky say 14:1 against us going down which I think is generous. Could take it and pray to lose!
If Morecambe win which is quite possible , Barnet beat a relaxed Morecambe (likely) in the next 2 we need 2 points. 2 draws or a win. A bit scarey UTM

Just catching up on this, so sorry if I repeating someone.

But if Morecambe lose tonight, then Barnet beat them on Saturday, which we all don't want to happen, then Morecambe  have to get a result away at Coventry, even if we lose both games

The other teams can do as they will.

We beat County at the weekend we are safe.

Let's keep our fate in our own hands and not look to others.

Stop worrying about other games, we can do nothing about then.
One thing is definite,  we will be at least two points clear when we go to the last game, it will be in our hands.
Lets behave like what we are, the best fans in the football league and get right behind the lads

I'm taking nothing for granted, despite us being 5 points clear with 2 games left. We have had such low points in recent years, that it wouldn't surprise me if we dropped into the last two, for the first time in 46 games, in the very last game of the season and got relegated by FGR. All the other disappointments would pale into insignificance if it were to happen, but being a GTFC fan for the last terrible 15 years has made me feel anything is possible. We cannot seem to shake off Barnet completely.

To have any chance of staying up Barnet had to win their last three games. Very few decent sides win three on the bounce, let alone a team in the bottom two.

Ok, so Allen has done an amazing job of motivating them in recent weeks, but the truth is that they are basically a poor side. Teams like Barnet seldom have the consistency to win week in week out. One slip up and they are done for.

Hats off to them if they pull it off, but history suggests they will most likely drop points in the next two games. How ironic if it were Chesterfield that sent them down!

Obviously tonight can change things, but.... thinking ahead to our game on Saturday.

It is an absolute MUST-NOT-LOSE game. Not a must-win. If we don't manage to win against what clearly is a decent side (despite them looking poor against Chesterfield on TV, they're up there for a reason), then it's vital we can hold on for a point.

Getting a draw as opposed to losing could be the difference between survival/relegation.
Getting a draw leaves us only needing to draw at FGR on the last day.
If we lose to Notts County, only a win at FGR guarantees safety.

Obviously hope we win on Saturday but just need to make sure we get at least a draw.

I agree with that. Of course we could lose on Saturday and still be safe if Barnet don't win on Saturday, but as you say if all else fails I would obviously prefer to be in need of a draw at FGR rather than a win.

Like most of us I can't wait for it to be all over.
