First of all - this may not be the correct spelling.

Just seen an enlightening feature on current BBC NEWS and the fight (it is at Grimsby Docks) to save it as a Heritage building. Looks like it was used for ice making to preserve fish.

Does anyone have any memories of this?

I worked down docks for about 6 months and it wasn't until about 2-3 months ago that this area was called the Kazbah.

So what you're saying is that the Ice Factory on the Fish Docks was used for making ice to preserve fish? Interesting theory.....

I watched it today. What a waste that area is. This sort of neglect simply doesn’t happen in most towns and cities. Not sure who is to blame but most seem to point the finger at ABP.

Stick the new ground on it etc....

My parents both worked on the docks many moons ago and I'm sure I've heard mention of an area called the kasbah. I caught the news report at lunch time and it was interesting to see those stores which have been untouched and unused for decades!

A pity the land is going to waste and is unused at present, but ABP hold huge amounts of land such as this and it isn't in their interests to divest themselves of it if they can potentially flog it off for a lot more money in the future. Another example of a publicly-owned entity privatised by Thatcher which is now owned by investment banks and foreign wealth funds.

I worked down Dock as a student in the mid 70s. The area was thriving then with smallish businesses which served the firms on the Pontoon with hardware (white coats/aprons/filleting knives etc) and cafes (none of your cafe culture just hot tea, bacon and egg sarnies, toasted cheese sarnies, coffee etc but I never heard it called The Casbah.

You never know - 'The Kazbah - Casbah - Kasbah - Kazbah - Casbah Stadium - but seriously, I visited this area a few years ago and could not believe the extent of the death of it.

I'm certain there must be an opportunity for someone to resurrect it and turn it in to a desirable place to live and work.

Maybe a few apartments for GTFC players to reside. Liverpool on the other side of England is doing this.

Sure the answer will be - no money for Grimsby. Why this news feature today - additional fishing water rights would not do any harm.

The area has the aura like the Bass Maltings in Sleaford, historically mysterious.

Flatten it all it's a fooking eyesore thanks to Labour and the EU.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Promise a man someone else's fish and he votes Labour.

I know its was Ted Heath's 1970 Tory government that took the UK into the then Common Market,  and the final straw for the cod wars, was when Iceland threatened to withdraw from NATO and offer the American bases there to The Soviets,  I don't think any 1976 Labour government had much , have you not heard of the "Cold War"

Every time we go back to Grimsby I go on a nostalgia trip, and it always includes the docks. What a waste, but it brings a lot of memories back. My Uncle Ken was an electrician at the ice factory after being made redundant from Dixons paper mill.
I heard that ABP who own the dock area want millions for the land but won't do anything with it. Must be enough land there to accommodate a new GTFC stadium and that must be the most appropriate place for us to play

It was used as a film set for some scenes in the war film Atonememt, basically because it resembled what it is, a bomb site. Pull the bloody thing down it's an eyesore.

Was going to say it's all due to it now being privately owned but Maringer beat me to it.
