Accrington Stanley

There is a very interesting article about Accrington in the sport section of today's Daily Mail under their On The Road feature. Amongst other things it mentions there manager , John Coleman, having to " get Accrington over the line on a budget of around £18,000 a week ". I'm assuming this would be the playing budget - I wonder how this compares to ours?
They also have " Winners' Hour " in the club bar. " All pints are £1 , with Coleman and his players mingling with the fans. It is the sort of initiative that is bringing the club closer to it's community ". Now it doesn't explain if that price is only applicable if they win , which I assume it would be as it is called " Winners' Hour " but it certainly is food for thought for the Trust at BP.

Wouldn't work for us as we never win  

£18,000 a week? That can't be right surely?

As we are a PLC, the accounts are freely available. Our budget is around £2m but that figure will include all staff wages. I would guess the players budget is around 75% of that so that's £1.5m divided by 52 weeks is £28846 per week.

Not an exact science of course as we don't know the players budget but I reckon a reasonable guess. I'm not sure if any transfer fees / signing on fees would be a part of this figure.

What John Coleman has done at Accrington on the budget he has is outstanding. Ok, they've got a good catchment area of players released by the bigger North-West clubs etc but he's clearly managed to cultivate a winning, cohesive squad and mentality on a shoestring. I really hope they win the league.

Well that's what is printed in the article. It also mentions that the attendance , 2,313 , is the second highest this season.

The article also mentions Bill Holden who is a 74 year old volunteer who does most of the ground maintainence .  

Never thought i would be casting envious glances to Lincoln and Accrington Stanley. They were superb at BP and were toying with us at 3-0.

Unfortunately modern football is full of ups and downs. Who would have thought that Coventry would be in the 4th tier of the football pyramid or Wrexham and Tranmere non-league. We town fans always thought it happened to other clubs until we went non-league.

Everything about Stanley is perfect

I fully appreciate and accept it is full of ups and downs, and in a perverse sort of way, that is the attraction of following a lower league unfashionable club. I could never be a fan of Arsenal, Man Utd etc, whose fans start crying when they lose three games on the trot or don't win a trophy every season.

I think we all accept the realities of our place in the grand scheme of things and realise that there will be more mediocre/poor seasons than good ones. But it's getting beyond a joke now, how bad we have been and for how long. Even fans of club's such as ourselves have a limit to how much of the mediocre/poor we can take. We should be more than comfortable at this level, and to be in a constant state of relegation threatened panic is unacceptable.

But it's getting beyond a joke now, how bad we have been and for how long. Even fans of club's such as ourselves have a limit to how much of the mediocre/poor we can take. We should be more than comfortable at this level, and to be in a constant state of relegation threatened panic is unacceptable.

Trouble is its a mystery.....now if only there was one thing, one common denominator that could identify a link between our slow slide down the Leagues, our slow rise back and subsequent stalling and backward momentum to a point of teetering over the edge again...if we could just put our finger on that we could perhaps solve the problem and move forward.......

Oh erm....no, no that would just be coincidence....

Oh...yes...got it....fans ! . Every season they have been turning up since at least 2004....and ever since then we have been a shadow of our former selves.

They have an excellent chance at winning the league, even if they do not win the league it is inevitable they will get promoted, it proves that provided everybody pulls in the right direction a small budget can get far, about time the GTFC board sat up and took note.

I see the sentiment but there is absolutely no chance whatsoever of us all pulling in the same direction whilst Fenty is in charge.

He has completely blown it; nearly every fan you speak to has had quite enough. Long standing fans on here have had enough - a while ago there were still people sticking up for Fenty no matter what, but even they have seen the light. Not all, obviously, but most.

I used to daydream that Fenty would, one day, change and see and learn from his mistakes, and run the club properly and successfully. Sadly I know that day will never come.  

Once the season ends, whatever the outcome on the field, he must find an exit strategy.
