The commentary on Slade isn't quite correct. Throughout pre-season and for the first few games of the season, he attempted to play with a 4-2-3-1 formation and, I assume, he made most of his signings on this basis. When this didn't work well enough (no pace, no useful target man), we eventually moved to 4-4-1-1/4-4-2 and started whacking it forward a bit more. He did attempt something different (as with his 3-4-3 with which he began his first spell at the club), but couldn't get it to work. Basically because the players he signed weren't good enough!
