And 2 + 7 = 9

And our points gained are (9 x 3) + (9 x 1) = 27 (again!) + 9 = 36 and 3 + 6 = 9.

Points dropped = (9 x 2) + (18 x 3) = 18 (also 9) + 54 (and 9 again!) = 72 and we know what 7 + 2 makes......

Maximum points would have been 36 x 3 = 108. 1+0+8 = 9.
