Pretty short really, matt dean didn't pull his punches fair play to him. Was hoping to hear more from jolley about how he wants to set up the team but I guess its early days for that

Good move keeping JF away from this. Whatever our views on him, he must be feeling the strain. Better for him to keep out of the spotlight for a bit and just let MJ bed in. Philip Day is a much more cordial and collegiate personality to be sent out on these occasions.

Quite interesting. He's clearly intelligent and he's very measured in how he speaks, he thinks about the impact of each word. Whether or not that intelligence is translated to being able to out think the opposition and to knowing how to rebuild the squad's confidence, time will tell. I did like that he re-iterated a few times that we have some good players, he needs to keep that message strong and consistent in order to raise their spirits. A world away from Bignot, thank God, who came in and within a couple of weeks had said we needed "more technical players" whatever that means.

It's a dream job for Jolley. 6 points ahead of the drop, if he keeps us up he'll be hailed as the saviour. If we go down he'll probably still get a few years to take us up

Wonder if Radio Humbs are being crafty and insisted on Matt Dean doing the interview, leading to the non-chairman not fancying it after their last cosy chat. Much better way, John Fenty out playing golf and Steve Marley sedated and stored in the broom cupboard out of the public's way for a couple of hours.

Well that was all low key wasn't it? Nobody apart from Matt Dean asking any questions and it all ended rather abruptly. Suppose everyone is weary of press conferences for new managers, seeing as they come around quicker than Star Wars sequels. I couldn't help thinking that it was Marcus Bignot all over again. He even said "listen" at one point. Maybe that was a p1ss take? More talk about ambition, promotion and where we want to take the club. Heard it all before to be frank, so let's see some action this time.

not too much to be gleaned from that - fairly standard stuff.he is obviously intelligent and articulate and comes across well. points i took from it
* pyschology going to be a big part of the new regime
* thinks he has some good footballers here, but doesn't rule out an out of contract signing
* eventually wants to play fast attacking football, but think the next 10 games will just be a dog fight
* i got the impression of a 'smiling assassin' - comes across as extremely amenable but i suspect there's fair bit of steel in there

Eloquent. Said all the right things. No wild promises. Mr Day said the club's long term goal is Championship football in 5 years. Now that would be some achievement and brought a wry smile from Michael who quite rightly wanted to concentrate on what he called is a 10 game season, starting on Sat. He said he is happy to work with existing staff. My guess is "for now"

Articulate and clearly not phased by the task in front of him. Clearly didn't want to over-promise & under-deliver and he's also got a bit of a 'free hit' as others have said - keep us up and he's a bit of a hero, take us down and he can say the damage was already done.

Speaks well and a likeable figure (at the moment anyway!).
He has the opportunity to be a potentially pioneering appointment within the English game. I just hope to god he takes it.
I don't think it'll be through a lack of trying if he doesn't

It's a good job Matt Dean turned up
TBF after all the questions MD asked there were not many more specific questions left to ask a new face that is going to cut his teeth at GTFC. Matt Dean showed how it should be done regarding searching questions, asked without the abrasiveness of Burns or the kindness of JT, good conference on how we may avoid the conference

No surprises there. The guy is articulate and can think on his feet.
Seemed a pretty straight talker. Realises the plight we are in, but is not phased by it. It's a shame such a crucial game is coming so early in his tenure, but he looks like a guy that can take pressure.
As I have said before, keeping us up with this squad is going to be very tricky, but for now at least, he is bring an air of quiet confidence.
If left to Wilko and Slade we would definitely have been relegated. Now at least we have a chance to stay up.

I'd suggest that MJ knows, as most of us on here have commented on frequently that there's a more than decent core of a team here. Add to that a mish-mash squad of players who are either good enough to fit into his plans and fill out that core into a good team or fall by the wayside, there's enough quality to be squeezed out and turned into a team fit for survival is my view.

Wonder of MJ can call back clem, how we could with him and Mcallister sat in midfield right now with summers sat mopping up the pieces... Do think the Mr Jolley has some bright ideas and with Sean Dyche as a mentor and a shoulder to lean on it can only be a good thing! Time will tell, although he comes across quite meek, possibly a little mild I think they`ll be more than a prawn sandwich thrown in the dressing room if the players do not pull their weight for him!!

Michael came across as a well spoken intelligent person ;
Philip Day is a really nice man who should handle all GTFC PR in the near future,
Now we need some wins on the pitch.
Here's to a new future.

I will settle for low key and pragmatic after all the bull that has been sprouted before him. Not sure what you were after particuarly when you say you've heard it all before. Everybody on here seemed to want new blood, me included, and first signs are that he will definately never talk the bollox that Bignot did but will offer something new that Slade never could. Time will only tell though.

Good to see his full focus is on the 10 remaining games and not getting sidetracked with what the future holds.
|
| In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions. Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them. GOD |

Good, honest presentation to the media. What I want to know is:
Is he tracksuit or suit manager on the touchline. When was the last time we had a gaffer wearing anything other than the standard GTFC/Errea tracksuit 🤔😉

Mr.Day is clearly a nice man, and whatever the reasons for Fenty not showing up, it was the right thing to do. To talk of Championship football in 5 years though was utterly bizarre. Ambition is one thing but the whole impracticality of what he said is quite another. It reinforced my view that although in the whole well meaning, non of the board seem to have a clue about modern football administration. We all wish for things - but it ain't gonna happen without huge change on and off the pitch. Jolley came across well and I am sure he will get a tremendous reception on Saturday. I hope he is the start of a better future.

Im suggesting that as Jolley left his last role in Sweden as the board failed to show the same sort of ambition and commitment that Michael has, then our board had to and will continue to talk up the ambition of the club to convince him to sign in the first place.
Gonna be a huge ask to get us to the championship though as football is not what it used to be in Buckleys era. The championship had teams like Town, Walsall, Crewe and Tranmere holding there own. Now giants like Sunderland with 30,000+ fans are struggling.
Excited about this appointment though and the future (once this season is out of the way). We will pretty much start next season with a fresh canvas as the whole squad is pretty much out of contract come May.

I wasn't particularly after anything. It was all a bit perfunctory and the fact that it was left to Mr Day, with not much fanfare suggests the club are actually keeping a low profile on this one, after all the promises of the last two managers came to nought. We were even told 2 days before who the manager would be that they were introducing. I think Mr Day should have just kept to the brief and not mentioned League 1 and the Championship. That's the bit that riled me. All the talk that comes to nothing, like being top 7 this season. Getting rid of all the best players in the arrogant notion that we would just sail along to seasons end with no problems is the reality of the situation. Stop talking about what we are going to do and actually sort out the main thing, which is staying in the division. Sorry if all that sounds cynical and defeatist, but that's the way i feel after years and years of poor decisions, with myriad managers and players coming and going. The one constant in all this is still there.

Good interview and he seems to be a realist who recognises the situation we are in. I thought Mr Day handled himself well and although he did make that rather ambitious statement for the next 5 years I thought Michael Jolley response that we deal with the present first and deal with other ambitions after was very grounded and wants to just get on with the job in hand. My first impressions positive.

One thing is certain,
He can only be an improvement on Slade,
Second that Pete! To be fair Phillip Day taking the team himself would be an improvement over Slade!

My guess is "for now"
Please tell me you made that up ?!?! Hahahahahahahahaha....Long term..5 yrs... why the fck cant they just say " Good morning everyone...as previously announced here is Mr Jolley our new first team manager...any questions ? " They are already setting themselves up for a missed target... we currently have .. New ground in two years Championship in five years Highly unlikely on both counts i would say as we are currently just sitting outside the relegation from the football league places, havn't won in 15 games, have 5/6 players in place for next season, havn't even submitted an outline planning application for a ground ...yet we hope to be playing Championship football in the FentyExtreme Dome in 5 years ?!?! I hope there was some sniggering at that point.

I have two concerns:
1) he said “listen” like Bignot, and 2) he said “in the building” like Fenty.
Other than that, exciting times!

Thought Phillip Day came across very well indeed as in fact he did at the fans forum the other week, the only one who came out of it with some respect in tact.
He should front absolutely everything the club puts out instead of Fenty and if ever Fenty goes I hope the new owners can find a place for him in the boardroom
Breath of fresh air and a nice surprise seeing him doing that today

I've had the pleasure of speaking to PD on a couple of train journeys back to London after away games in the Conference days and he is a very honest, affable man. He is able to explain both sides of a story and I know is sympathetic to a lot of the agenda spoken of around youth development, fan engagement and safe standing.

No totally understand and don't disagree with any of your comments but did have to check on 'perfunctory'. Championship statement was stupid given the situation were in but there again there have been many bullet holes in the foot of Grimsby Town one should never be surprised of another. Can't blame anyone for being cynical and defeatist after watching what we are. One can only Hope!

If Philip Day thinks it's feasible to have a five year aim to be in the Championship, I'd like him to outline what fundamental changes are going to happen in the near future at Blundell Park to make it more than a lip service fantasy. Even if MJ is successful here, he will need a lot more ammo and bullets than the board are currently handing out to achieve that target..

Champions League within 8 years?
Now lets not start making sh!t up to try and make our board look out of touch with reality... It was Europa League in 8yrs and Champions League the following year following the Europa League win

The Board/Club gets criticised enough for not showing any ambition. So I don't mind them showing some ambition with the Championship aspiration. Note this was only after saying that he believes we should be capable as a Club of holding our own in the top half of League One. It wasn't like he just came out all guns blazing saying we want Championship football in 5 years.
No harm in aiming high is there?
Some on here recently have suggested that some of the Board would be happier for us to be in the Conference where we'd be a big fish in a small pond, so maybe there's an element of batting that away with this comment too?

Ok. Been in my workshop hitting stuff with big hammers, so have chilled a bit since this morning. As ever, the manager will get my backing at the ground and i will say that he came across quite well this morning, so i wish him luck and can't wait to see what happens at BP on Saturday. As you say, one can only hope.

I would say that they get criticised more for constantly failing with those ambitions. There is nothing wrong with ambition as you rightly point out, but the evidence has been to the contrary for too many years. I would be happy to be competing at this level and not constantly looking over our shoulders.

Ambition is great, but you need evidence to back it up. If we survive, then lets have the discussion about future plans, and the method of achieving them.

He is Radio Humberside's sports editor, not sure who else they would send and he seemed to be the only one asking the questions.

Yes, that did occur to me but given the last run in they had, and the usual stance that the non-chairman has taken with RH I could imagine us requesting someone more 'trusted' than Matt. But not Burnsy. Or anyone senior in the Sports Dept who has crossed swords with JF. Possibly the lad who reads the weather. Either way, works for me.

Go back to our last season in the championship, and if anyone had suggested scunny being in the championship in five years, and hull in the prem we'd have laughed our mammaries off.
It's bloody unlikely we'll do it, but it's not beyond the realms of possibility.

What PD said about league one top half in next five years sounds a realistic ambition. I took his comment about the championship as if things went really well not to plan but better.
For me Short term = get through this season as a league 2 club; Medium term challenge for promotion to league one over next 2-3 seasons. Then become an established league one side season 4+.
Like MJ said though let's just get through the next 10 games and take it from there. I liked what I heard from both board and manger.

Wonder if PD knows something we don’t 🤔 obviously it’s every clubs ambition to go as high as you can just look at burton who would thought that, just make me wonder where the money will be coming from ? Unless we are getting bought out by a billionaire very unlikely though

That's essentially what he did say... And one of the questions was 'what are the long-term goals of the club'
To be fair how much ambition would it have shown if he just said 'We're hoping to be a mid-table league 2 side in 5 years'. If he had said that people would have been damning the board for showing no ambition and having no vision to aspire to etc etc!
The thing is they have no credibility to be able to state that, the best statement the club has made in recent times was our first season back in the League, along the lines of " we have been away for a long time, need to establish ourselves first and paramount is securing our League status" ...completely sensible, completely achievable at the time. Then we get the Bignot era, build for the future, infrastructure isnt there behind the scenes to build the club, "the plan" , 3-5 yrs which seemed acceptable to all especially as Hurst had left with murmurings of lack of infrastructure. ....then that suddenly wasnt quick enough and it was binned off in favour of assess the squad with play offs next (this) season, as that now petered out it was "we are building" ....then its failure so sacked....now its " 5 yrs to Championship"..... The club have absolutely no clear mandate whatsoever and until it does the club will suffer and every statement of ambition by the board will be challenged. If it truly is long term ,then 5 yrs isn't long term is it ? Will our current U16 - U13 teams be developed ready for Championship level football by the time they hit 18-21 yrs ? While we are selling raffle tickets and whipping round parents to fund it then i truly doubt it. The deemed best 3 players of the last crop are...Wright on loan at Scarborough, Venney released and Clifton just made his full debut....hardly a ringing endorsement. When the board start being credible by delivering or sticking by what they say then we can all move forward.

I think a few may have interprated the championship comment the wrong way.
My interpretation was that the club believe there is no reason why we shouldn’t be a comfortable top end league 1 team. (Ala Scunthorpe)
If we where to achieve that then there is absolutley every possibility we could regain championship status, only takes a play off spot and then some luck during them.
I didn’t think when asked that the aim was “to be a championship club in five years”. Just that if we achieved the league 1 goal, which was the long term aim, you never know what could happen with a little luck.
But as MJ wisely pointed out, it’s all about the next 10 games at the minute.

Just to clear it up..
Philip Day said..
"With everything going in our favour, there is no reason why we could not within the next five years regain our Championship status."
What does "with everything going in our favour" mean? Football fortune? Or is there a cohesive plan that means that we leapfrog clubs like Blackburn, Wigan, Portsmouth, Bristol Rovers, Plymouth, Charlton, Coventry, Luton, Bradford, Rotherham, Peterborough, clubs that drop out of the Championship and clubs that are bankrolled like Scunthorpe, Fleetwood and clubs that have already got new stadiums and infrastructure in place like Shrewsbury, Doncaster, Oxford and MK Dons. That's seventeen clubs for a start never mind the smaller ones we can't compete with at present.
I'm really positive regarding the managerial appointment, I really am, but that statement about Championship in five years.. they're either piling a lot on MJ's shoulders or something radical has got to change. I know a lot of you are saying it shows ambition, and it does, but it's blind ambition as it stands with this board. They have not proved anything to me in the past fifteen years that doesn't make me highly sceptical of PD's judgement in that statement, whether it's based on his belief or just plain hopefulness.
If I was interviewing PD, I'd have loved to ask him how he thought it would be possible without a new stadium, investment or a wholesale change in approach. I used to think our natural position was upper League One, but how we are set up at present, I can't make a case for us being higher than the seventeen clubs listed above..
There's a massive difference between someone telling you something you want to hear or telling you something you can fully believe in..

Just to clear it up..
Philip Day said..
"With everything going in our favour, there is no reason why we could not within the next five years regain our Championship status."
What the hell does "with everything going in our favour" mean?
They have not proved anything to me in the past fifteen years that doesn't make me highly sceptical PD's judgement in that statement, whether it's based on his belief or just plain hopefulness.
If I was interviewing PD, I'd have loved to ask him how he thought it would be possible without a new stadium, investment or a wholesale change in approach. I used to think our natural position was upper League One, but how we are set up at present, I can't make a case for us being higher than the seventeen clubs listed above..
I tend to be in agreement with the vast majority of Bigdos posts but this is having a go for the sake of it. Phil Day said he hoped we could be a top half league one team in a few years and then when pushed said the above. Nothing wrong with a bit of ambition and most of us would say top half league one is a reasonable target in 4 years or so. Anyway by far and away the most important comments at the press conference were delivered by Jolley. It's a ten game season and a scrap at that

I have no problem with being ambitious but let's deal with the reality first. Achieving that ambition will require significant investment if we stay up. If we stay up, I would certainly like to know how that is going to be funded.

I'm not having a go for the sake of it. My question is.. what tools are going to be given to our new manager that have not been afforded to any other manager appointed in the past fifteen years? It's a sound question.. If they're going to be the same, then I just can't agree with what Philip Day said.. A new manager cannot be expected to make up for all of the shortcomings at our club. It's highly unfair on him and highly unfair to raise fan expectation that much without having a sound plan to create a better environment all round at the club..

It's a bit difficult to believe when money is coming out of the club instead of going in and you sell your top scorer in January. There has been no evidence of any abililty to take the club forward in the time we've been back in the league. It would take a complete shift from the board in terms of ambition to challange in this league, let alone the next. They'd have to actually put some money into the team.

The temptation is to read too much into this 'Championship in 5 years' comment.
If we're honest with ourselves, it's where we'd all like to be again. We were there a few years back, we enjoyed it, we've missed it ever since. Personally I don't see any harm in PD saying what he said as it's the dream, not necessarily the hard-and-fast plan.
I criticise the club's PR skills more than most but I'll cut them some slack on that point.
However, I'd have rather him answer the question not in terms of league position but the general health of the club, i.e. in 5 years' time I'd like the club to be financially stable, 3-4 players in our starting XI from our youth team, more engaged with community projects, have a stronger Trust, etc.
While winning (and league positions) are important, if we are still in League 2 in 5 years' time but incredibly strong off the pitch, with player/fan relationships like they were with Disley, Pearson, etc - and the likes of Clifton, Wright, etc in the first team, I'd be really happy with that.
Because when you have the foundation, you can build on it. Going all guns blazing for promotion often leaves you throwing money at something, and when it fails things just crumble all around you.

Really impressed and like the look of him... My only complaint is the unrealistic comment about being a championship team within 5 years... Come on guys, be realistic. At best we're mid table league 1 set up, at best. Our stadium is terrible, capacity is low, our income is no way near championship standard, the way the club is run is no way near good enough for that level, not to mention squad and training facilities.. Personally I think staying up is a massive thing we all need to concentrate on. Next season and the next couple personally think we should realistically should be aiming to try get in the play offs. If we finish 4 or 5 points and 3 or 4 places away from it for me it's a half decent season.

You make some good points Rich. The press conference was understated and I like that. Jolley appears to exude a calm, quiet confidence, but devoid of the usual ego trips previous managers have displayed. I cannot for one minute imagine Jolley cocking his ear towards a jubilant Wembley crowd, or attacking Matt Dean like a rabid Pitbull, then sulking off refusing to take interviews from Matt ever again. No, I think this guy is for real. Now if he can somehow translate that calm, assured confidence on to the team and radiate his apparent professionalism on to the club, then I truly believe we are on to a winner here. Yes, I know its early days and maybe some of the Fishy’s and Phillip Day’s new found optimism is rubbing off on me. But, if provided with a realistic budget, full support of the fans and minimal interference by Fenty then the good times could be just around the corner.

Don't knock the guy for expressing some ambition. Aim for the stars and you might hit the moon. It's not like we have never been in the championship. I've seen us promoted to it three times.
If you told Bournemouth fans, when they were handed a huge points deduction that seemed sure to relegate them out of the league, that they would soon be a premiership club, they would have thought you were totally insane.
Dare to dream.
Until Saturday at least.

I love the ambition too but when we were in the Championship, Bill Carr told me we couldn't afford to be there. Most of the club's get far bigger gates than Blundell Park could hold, so a new ground is a must to help fund that ambition, unless we get big investment.

Think you will find that he higher you go through the leagues the less importance gate receipts have, look at the premier and see how many clubs grounds will not hold 30k but in the championship there are quite a few who could.

Thought he came MJ came across well but Day was a bit “vanilla” throughout. Not fussed about the Championship bit as our board tend to say sh1t for effect.
My only gripe is that they should have done it later in the day considering where we are I’d have liked to have seen him on the t4ain8ng ground early doors instead.
Let’s see what Saturday brings.

Great interview that. And worth a watch as a lot more to it than the press conference. Good work Matt Dean and MJ again comes across very well, with a little bit of insight into how he'll work.

Matt Dean was ganged up on and pummeled last time he was at a conference there he certainly grilled them both in-depth. to be honest, Day stayed calm and Jolley answered every question honestly which was refreshing.
They probably had Fenty tied up around the back of that screen with a scarf tightly wrapped around his mouth only kiddin lol.
Seriously good interview on both sides hope Mike as a bit of luck about him we could really do with some of that as well.

Well Phillip Day certainly came across better than Fenty would have, when Matt Dean asked about Paul Wilkinson Fenty would have snapped back "to suggest he had to work with Paul Wilkinson is absolute poppycock! This is why we have a failing relationship Matt because I don't like your questions"

Bloody 'ell, he hasn't even picked a team yet.
Too long in the tooth now bud and the board have finally ground me down to a level where, my admittedly natural pessimistic outlook regards GTFC, has now turned to pretty much cynicism about everything GTFC. I am desperate for MJ to work some wonders, re-energise the club, the support, unite us all and give us a team to be proud of but i am currently too mardy with it all to just jump on his bandwagon because of some buzzwords, hazy memories of playing in a sandpit and a masters degree. Enthusiasm is at an all time low thanks to the B.O.D. That's just how i feel. Sorry.

facebook interview was far more illuminating. i don't think we will be getting the fast attacking football this season, simply because he hasn't got the players nor the time to change things drastically
in fact i think the thing that comes through loud and clear from his videos, interviews and the v. informative posts by dougie j is that jolley constantly changes his line ups and tactics depending on who we are playing and how they play.
i also suspect that there will be 1 or 2 out of contract signings fairly quickly, presumably from sweden. if andrew fox is out of contract he's be the strong favourite to be first in, to give us a bit of pace and endeavour on the LHS

So many on here have a love-hate relationship, in the fact that so many love to hate everything about the club.
I agree that 80% of past year has been awful, and people are correct to moan.
However, the past few days have been positive, made a positive appointment, made a positive statement about the appointment, then made a positive comment in the press conference, and we still find a way to moan?
All i will say is well done to every one involved, and i hope it works out over the next 10 games, and we can all get excited about the future of the club again

It's not moaning Jarmo, it's cynicism born of experience. It's not just 80% of the past year that has been awful is it? We have been pretty bad as a club for a long time now and i feel pretty much as Moosey does, even though i'm usually a forgiving sort. My natural moderate tendencies have been tested to the limit and like some, i feel that the club has now used up all my good will. I don't hate everything about the club. It pains me to see us constantly struggling. The manager will get my 100% backing at BP as all managers do, but experience has taught me not to go overboard with gushing praise until we see some evidence that he is the right man for the job. Like Moosey, i'm sorry if that doesn't sit well with the prevailing view, but it's how i feel. Maybe it's my advancing age and my arthritis playing up in this weather.

We need to sit together ..

We mostly all feel like Moosey because we have seen and heard it all before so so many times.A massive sea change is required but in all honesty MJ needs to just keep us up first and foremost we can survive but it will be a difficult slog. The fans need to back the team and forget everything else for now once were safe then the gloves can come off.I suspect regardless of leagues the Club will be hit with a huge drop in ST sales unless they come out and splash some serious cash?
