We were told there would be an announcement today. Nobody said it would be to announce a new manager

I reckon they had a 1pm press conference lined up and Brown has thrown a massive spanner in the works by declining.

To get to such an advanced stage he must have fancied it...what made his mind up? Personal finances or team budget?
As has been mentioned, if they don't like the look of things then any potential managers might not fancy relegation to the Conference on their c.v.

Apparently held talks with him a number of times over the last week and he saw our game against Cambridge and has watched footage of our previous games. Was offered the job and looked set to take it but given his concerns about our team and the fact that other jobs are available he decided against.

Sounds like another position has turned his head then..better to find out now that he'd prefer Fleetwood/whoever than later.

Bit depressing really. Not because it's Phil Brown, but because we are not that attractive a prospect. Ah well, Hurst wasn't first choice.

Yeah, but my judgement is clouded where GTFC is concerned. It may not be that attractive to the likes of Phil Brown, but the opportunity is there for someone to come in and get us to really take off. Surely there is someone out there who can see the potential.

I’d have liked him to come (at least until the end of the season) but who can blame him for turning the job down.

This isn’t true. Brown’s agent leaked to Humberside to save face. He’s not got it.

Remember this guy often appears on their show so is chummy with them. It’s a very bad look for him to be overlooked by us after publicly declaring interest.

Time for some on here to wise up.

I for one would have been happy with this appointment, an experienced manager who is not afraid to say what he thinks.

However when you are looking to re-build your reputation following a sacking you would not choose to do it with our current gutless shower of sh1t !!!!!

Can't help but feel that in the words of corporal Frazer, "WE ARE DOOMED" !

Nothing would surprise me about Brown. The deciding factor for him would likely be the quality of the speaker system and karaoke at BP.

A guess - he was offered the job, said yes then came back to ask something more (budget/wages/contract?) and was refused.

That's exactly what i expect those at the club to say.

I reckon he's give it a swerve due to money or length of contract.

Brown - and his agent - are not daft. They know we didn't fancy him so have tried to save face as it becomes apparent he isn't going to get it.

Let's not forget he declared interest via Mike White on Humberside. They're just his personal mouth piece to stop him looking daft.

Exactly, it's not really adding up. Brown seems to be in the area, there's an announcement at 1.00 apparently but it won't be to announce Brown and the bookies have gone a bit quiet.

Now expecting something out of leftfield to stun us all. But not Wilko

Much as I do not approve of the board's running of our club, I do reckon it's best to actually get any such info straight from the horse's mouth. No point in speculating at all.......although I have heard Robbie Fowler has been seen down the docks this morning.

Can't remember who stated the 1.00 announcement, didn't look too likely which is why I used the term apparently...was there one planned? Was it postponed/abandoned/never happening? Is Brown on holiday? Anyone seen Robbie Fowler?

Who knows...there's no big rush yet though, I'd accepted Wilko may get a couple of games and I'm ok-ish with that if that's what it takes.

Well we know Fenty likes to correct the press.

Would be rather comical if when the decision is announced Fenty adds that Brown was interviewed but was never offered the role.

Just heard the report on Humberside and their wording was ...Phil Brown has turned down the "chance" to become GTFC manager ....they understand he had talks with Ian Fleming but not sure how far they went.....

at no point did they actually say he has refused or turned down a job offer.

So the news is that Phil Brown turned down the chance of a formal interview.

All a damp squib. I'm going for a walk along the seafront. Maybe i will see someone else in Browns' cafe.

Which one.

The interviewer ?

or the interviewee ?

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

. Surely there is someone out there who can see the potential.

But that's the whole problem in my opinion Ginny. There isn't any potential (other than a new man can't fail to improve things)

Crap squad (half of 'em on loan)
Crap ground (and absolutely no sign of a new one)
Crap ownership (all in the hands of one non-football person)
Crap financial situation
Crap programme to bring any youngsters through

You may be right, but i prefer to look at what we can offer, rather than what we can't. A new manager has a chance to work at a solvent club that is well supported and has the chance to bring in a whole raft of players in the summer.

It doesn't take too long to turn around the fortunes of a club with the right appointment. The argument is what that right appointment should be it seems. I think young and ambitious myself, others disagree.

THIS is why Slade should have been fu(king sacked while players could still be brought in.

THIS is what happens when you let your mate have a couple more weeks.

THIS is how it feels to be lonely, this is how it feels to be small,

Humberside might have changed Brown's mind about joining us,

He spoke to his mates at RH and they could have  told him all the problems they have had with our non chairman.

Wouldn't have minded Brown but if he doesn't have the confidence to the job in hand it might be a lucky escape for us.
We are in a mess that's for sure but any manager worth his salt  could sort it out. Whoever takes the job, if he can't save us he's not going to be the long term solution the club desperately needs. Utm

Brown is 58, and his best days are behind him, we could do with someone 20 years younger who has yet to make their reputation in the management game.

Phil Brown had a change of heart last minute not to take the job was offered the post yesterday. Club was hoping to announce him new gtfc manager today.

No way were the club going to announce anything today.

The best you would have got today was an announcement that a news conference is called for the following day at 10am.

This, and your previous posts, suggests this was bullshit

The more I think about it, the more I think Brown may have done us a favour by turning the job down (if indeed that is the case). While he might have shaken things up in the short term, I can't see how it would have been a longer-term arrangement as I'm sure he would have wanted a transfer budget well beyond anything the current regime would be prepared to sanction.

The more i think about it, the more I'm torn between thinking we should appoint someone to take us forward, develop a playing style and eventually bring through some youth, or to appoint a "short term fix" man until the end of the season to ensure we stay up (before then going for a long term man in the summer).

It's all gone quiet on the Robbie Stockdale front. I've not been keeping tabs on everything - has he categorically said he's not interested?

Has Robbie Stockdale got more to offer than Wilko? He's never managed above academy level has he? I suspect that if Wilko was a coach at a big club right now, there would be a clamour for him to come here. I don't get the fascination with Stockdale personally.

Being picky I know but I thought Stockdale is the development squad manager, i.e. Under 23's as opposed to academy ( up to under 18's) ?

Just means the players under him are far closer to the first team.

Whilst I would add Wilko has never been close to being a manager despite being in his 50's, I agree that if Stockdale had never been here he wouldn't be getting a mention.

I can't be bothered to look it up but thought I'd heard the other day that Stockdale is reserve team manager now at Sunderland.
And obviously has previously been u18s and u23s manager either there or elsewhere I think.
