We have so many dreadful players its beyond belief, what has slade signed? A lot of anger here in cambridge directed at fenty and the players. I just pray others keep losing as thats all that will save us. No mOM, but matt can have worst on the pitch , he was hopeless. Pray for town. Safe journey home to all

JUST GO
WALK AWAY
LEAVE US ALONE
PLEASE

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

We don't even need to be that good to pull away from the bottom. We are losing to every other flipping team around us and none of them are that good. Thank God we have a 9 point cushion and the bottom two are just as terrible.

Think that’s the key fact, when you try and pick a team yourself it’s nigh on impossible to find a decent eleven.

Think we need to stick with 3 at the back and young lad has to play next week, may suit him as a Exeter normally a footballing side rather then big guys, I would start him with Collins and Mills, if McAllister & Clifton are fit they just have to start even its more in hope than in anticipation.

Hall Johnson or Dembele wide right with Davies or DJ wide left.

Up front simply have no idea but would look at dispensing with using a big guy just not working. Why were Clements Osbourne and Jones allowed to leave? May save short term in wage bill but relegation will cost us far, far more.

next week.

Macca

Mills, Suliman Collins (if he's over his concussion) Hall-Johnson
Summerfield Clifton Berrett (unless Rose's suspension is up)
Wilks, Jackson (if fit) Vernam

We need goals lets go for it 3 strikers, 3 in midfield and our quickest wingbacks to run up and down the flanks with Wilks and Vernam

I don't mind Roy Keane making £60,000 a week. I was making the same when I was playing. The only difference was I was printing my own - Mickey Thomas

The area you are trying to protect at corners is the goal - Chris Kamara

Supporter on the radio now LIVE from the game talking about Scot Vernon giving an offensive gesture to our fans and Kelly and Osborne laughing at our fans FFS.

Sounds like the fans have had enough and the players don't give a feck.

I suspect we will see a few players suddenly becoming injured rather than rolling their sleaves up and battling for 3 points. May be a blessing in disguise. I know it is only 1 game but does anyone apart from John McDermot think PW is the man for the job.

If this can be proven.

Vernon should be sacked immediately. The other two fined the maximum they can be, and either forced to train with the youths or released from their contracts.  characters like this are exactly what we do not need in a relegation fight, and this attitude can easily spread to others.

Man up Fenty and show the players who is boss. This club will not be taken the urine out of by half arsed players

Haven’t posted on here in a while but having just seen that “performance”, I really don’t know where we go from here (other than back to the Conference). I thought we looked ok for the first 10, the were dreadful first half and yet somehow it’s us that are 1-0 down. I expect we’ll hear that we were unlucky, and yes a few times this season I’ll accept that can be an excuse, but you don’t have 13 consecutive ‘unlucky’ games.

Couldn’t name you a single outfield player who I thought did well, and more than anything I just feel sorry for McKeown. Made some decent saves, and just looks crestfallen at the state we find ourselves in. Vernam at least tried to carry the ball forward, but Osborne was beaten by their striker every time without fail and ended up in shouting match with RHJ this time. What that poor lad from Villa will be thinking if Mills gets played at centre Half ahead of him I’ll never know.

If we were a small club in this league giving our best on a shoestring budget, I’d understand but 18 months after Wembley to find ourselves in this state is staggering, it’s only League 2. Never ever leave early, but today I couldn’t bear to watch that bunch tossing it off and getting beaten to every ball by a poor Cambridge side. Already regretting booking trains to Carlisle and already praying we can at least show more than that listless effort today - Vernon’s alleged offensive gesture towards the fans was the most fight we showed all afternoon.

Probably the only thing that Wilko got right today. Sending Macca for the players interview.
Would be nice if he had the balls to send Vernon.

Sounded like he is missing his old team mates to me. Says the players are not 'orrible enough on the pitch. That's what you get with wasters and loanees and the club only have themselves to blame.

I understand the anger towards the players, but it is only them who can keep us up. It's hard because they aren't good enough, but a battle between the fans and players will only make us worse.

The board are getting some well deserved stick.

And to think only a week or two ago,  Russell Slade was telling us how he was building something and it takes time
Fraud should never get a job in football again seriously

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong

I'm enjoying the newly critical GET coverage. Now labelled as the 'Rated and Slated' column, with todays team averaging a poor 4/10 and (mostly) harsh appraisals of each player.
It'll all probably just add to the Boards paranoia levels as they insist everyone but themselves are wrong, in reality everyone in the world but them can see this board have been negligent in their duties and are close to bringing an established club to its knees. The final step will be the appointment of Wilko, the man who was 'devastated' by Slade's sacking, and 'enjoyed every minute' he worked alongside him.

Let's have a think about that...while the team embarrassed us all with week after week/month after month of woeful football, while we have stayed out of the bottom 3 ONLY because the bottom 3 kept losing, while the idiot Slade unnecessarily stuck his oar into the Matt Dean debacle...Wilko found this all normal and somehow enjoyable?

Sack the whole lot of them.

To be fair we started OK without looking like scoring then they scored
,
2nd half  was as poor I have seen for many a year even my 8 year old great granddaughter said we were rubbish,

So we left at 3-0 which was better than Ipswin who left at 2 -0,

Town fans were great at the start and must have been 700 or more singing and chanting,

Then due to the lack of effort from the players they went quiet and then turned on the non triers ,

Nearly a punch up on the way out with a Fenty fan and a few anti Fenty ones,

We need a miracle worker to get anything out of these players who seem uninterested ,

Felt sorry for Macca having to come back to play with this rubbish.

As bad as we were we could and should have been ahead at the break (same as Crawley game). Our shocking defending aside, the biggest problem is the quality of the balls into the box, which is horrendous, the main culprits being Dixon, Hall-Johnson and Summerfield.  Whoever is in charge needs to spend the coming week working on crosses, corners and free kicks. I'd stop Summers from taking all corners and free kicks to see if that helps also.

Just a shower of shite really.

Defence is all over the place.

No midfield.

And none of the strikers have a clue where the goal is.

One small correction to an earlier post - Osborne was up the other end of the field when the Vernon thing happened - probably still flat on his bottom from being turned by their number 9 again.

I honestly think they do care but are just not any good.
This is the worst collection of footballers ever to pull on a Town shirt.
Even Mills is now excrement, Slade has coached the football out of him.
18 months ago we were going mad at Wembley and thinking we could storm the league but here we are today a shadow of that team.
There is only one person to blame for this and that is Fenty.

First game since Luton and can't believe this is more or less the same team. Started well and were the better team, but powder puff defending led to their goal and after that we fell apart and were generally clueless.
Wilkinson is not the man ( knowing fenty he will probably give him the job permanently tonight.) we need a new man to organise and encourage this inept bunch.
Someone described it as passive, the goals they scored were just too easy, we are such an easy team to beat, no skill, no pace, no bite.
It's so bad I can't you a motm, possibly ver ham who had a good 45 and looked good, but the rest were anonymous. Mills, hall, summerfield, berrett all tried hard but ineffectual/nept. The delivery of crosses and free kicks was abysmal. Clarke was quite solid but Matt, Dixon and Osborne were bloody awful. Hooper did OK to be fair to him.
Fans almost scrapping amongst themseleves, abuse towards fenty and the subs, the reaction of Vernon, the club is in Shiite state and all we can hope is that Chesterfield and Barnet continue to be rubbish, because we are a relegation team, no dispute.

I was appalled at the abuse Vernon got from the Fenty Out rent a mob. He was only warming up for gods sake! Chanting at the players not fit to wear the shirt is really going to encourage them isn’t it ? !  Yes it was a poor performance but I am still a GTFC supporter so will be back next week to give my support to the players ( some of whom were really upset by the result if you bothered to look) as that is what support means. We get knocked down but we get back up to our feet and go again. If you can’t support the team through the bad times then stay away.

I keep my thoughts about the club management and board to myself as the team needs every bit of support to get back to the level we had at the start of the season and stop the distraction of the negative chants and leave them to outside the ground.

Just to cheer people up and perhaps provide food for thought.
Chris Clements was one of four nominations on Sky Sports for goal of the day, ( for VG bloody R ) Perhaps that might raise the question as to whether he should be recalled.
I guess there are reasons why he was lent out but we need to stop, think and change things in order to conjure a result from somewhere.

Can't afford him.

Could we bring him back, even if we wanted to?

Posted on a few other threads before this and had a good read of the above as I was trying to understand if it was me that felt we looked like a relegation side, evidently not. Despite what Wilco said this wasn't a good start it was just that 3-5-2 allows us to fill the space a bit better, we never really tested their keeper.

I could spend a few paragraphs talking through the game but my take homes from that are,

- WTF did Wilco pick Mills in the middle of a 3 versus their big physical Akinde like number 9?

- Should have kept it simple with a 4-4-2 or considering we are struggling to score 4-3-3

- Players don't look fit, if  they where fit they would get into the right bits of the final 3rd and play with  tempo

- When we got possession we slowed our own game down without Cambridge having to do it for us.

- When we attack we still don't get numbers in the box.

- Why take a defender off and bring on Kelly surely we should have put Cardwell on to run some channels

- Clifton should get a game he can't do any worse. Why is Berret picked ahead of McAllister ?

- GTFC will be the last EFL club for Dixon,Clarke, Osbourne, Berret, Matt and Hooper,

- Our heads go down like a cheap tart when we go behind, Summers apart we have no leadership

- At 3-1 we built an attack but still had 4 defenders behind the mid field, whatever happened to taking a chance and making a run?

I could go on and on.............and on ...........and on but overall the team today where rubbish.

The only player I I feel sorry for is Macca he worked hard and played on through disappointments like Gateshead and Wembley 15 to eventually achieve his goal of being an EFL keeper at GTFC, What must he be thinking now? I'd be amazed if he is here next season regardless of where we finish.

Whatever happened to that lad Pearson. we really need his like now!

In the general oppobrium about the performance I'd like to say a little something positive about Hooper. I'll readily admit I wasn't ecstatic when he replaced Jackson (on THAT note we really aren't having that much luck are we? Jackson looked lively before his injury) but I thought he did quite well when receiving the ball on the ground. His through ball to Bambi was excellent and should have resulted in more from Matt. He also played a part in the build up to the penalty. I do think there is a player in there and it wouldn't take a great deal from the new manager to get it out.

I thought Hooper was one of the better players and he tried to make things work,

With the right encouragement there is a player in there.

Slade might as well have still been there. It was like a carbon copy of the previous game with Crawley.

I too thought Hooper was one of our better players today

At the other end of the scale were Osbourne who was weak in mind and body and the totally anonymous Berrett.

I don't agree that the players weren't trying just that they are all shot of any confidence and some just aren't good enough.

Cambridge were pretty poor tbh but didn't have to do too much to win 3-1

I liked how he took his penalty, then again he could have tried to head it in as in reality noting was at stake.

He needs to lose a serious amount of timber and then take his shirt off and look at his number, strikers score more when they get in the box, look at Amond.

Talented?  He has it I think he just needs to use it...............

Don't think anyone thought there would be a 'massive change' under Wilkinson. I also didn't think they caused us 'no end of problems'. They scored 3 from about 5 shots on goal

There did seem to be a little more passing but the bottom line is we have a totally unbalanced squad giving whoever is in charge little room for manoeuvre.

Our only hope imo is that a new manager, a different approach, can lift the squad enough to scrape wins v Chesterfield and Barnet. Vital the new man is a motivator as Slade has left us with very limited options

This was my first game this season, after refusing to waste money on Slade.  Now, I am not naive enough to think that a whole lot would change in terms of playing style and ability, and the only thing I wanted to see was passion, effort, and a good atmosphere. There was none of them.

The day started off pretty shitty when we arrived at the ground due to an incident with a steward, which put me in a mood straight away.  The first embarrassing moment came when the players had finished the main warm up and came behind the goals, where they did a couple of drills of drills with some young lad shouting at the top of his voice "YOU WANT THIS MORE THAN THEM" and other motivational snippets like this. It lasted about a minute but if you need a 20 something lad screaming crap at you to get pumped up when GTFC are fighting for their FL existence, then you are in the wrong job.  Just prior to this was the only positive moment of the day, when the players led by Clarke got the fans pumped up, this was the only bit of effort I saw all game.

We started off ok, and by ok I mean we matched and contained Cambs without producing anything of note. After that, it was one-way traffic, with the odd hope of a set piece.

Macca - Did well especially for the 2nd goal, only for a free man to tap in.

Mills - Probably my MoM, The only player to take players on, which you should NOT be doing when you are playing CB/Sweeper. He looked to bring the ball out of defence at times but was often caught out by being too short. I like Mills, good player with the right attitude, but never ever going to be competent at CB. I'd have rather seen him at Wing Back taking players on.

Clarke, Osbourne - Both were turned on what seemed like every occasion by their strikers.  Clarke is not a leader, you do not see or hear anything from him to inspire his teammates. Clarke, however, showed class at times by pinging the ball about, only for the receiving player taking a lifetime to more often than not passing the ball backward and losing any slight momentum.

Dixon/HJ - Did not take on their man once, and Dixon's crossing is not great, I have not seen him as a LB but he's not a WB. HJ tended to drift infield into dead ends while on the ball.

Berret/Summerfield - Berret was anonymous and Summerfield was very negative in his play, always sidewards and backward.  Zero movement off the ball from these two, which makes passing and moving throughout the team impossible.  I have been very skeptical about all these claims that Summerfield is a much-improved player, however, I stand by what I've said on other posts, he's not improved, the quality around him has dropped.

Matt/Hooper/Vernam/Jackson - Matt and Hooper spent most of their time on their arses. No movement up front at all, no chasing down, no nothing. Vernam I didn't notice he was even on the pitch. Jackson was not on long enough to do anything of note.

Is this a poor team?  Not necessarily, it is a team playing poorly and with no confidence, clear direction or motivation.  I genuinely believe that the right manager could have got this team (along with Jones, Osborne, Clements, Bolly, and Asante) into the playoffs, but this club has been destroyed of its life by the appointment of Slade.  Yesterday was Wilko's first interview for the manager's job and he should be out of the running.  Poor formation, and where was the motivation, why where the players not up for it? The scary thing is, we need a new manager in place ASAP, which increases the risk of it being a poor appointment. Probably a rubbish example but a good manager can get more out of the players by bringing them together as a team. The sum of the parts is greater than the individual components. So just because Player A and B aren't the greatest does the team can't achieve. Leceister are a prime example when they won the league, individually not the best players in the league, but collectively they conquered and fought for one another.

I want Fenty out as much as the next bloke but chanting to that effect at the match will achieve nothing but negativity.  We need a unified body (Trust) to come up with a realistic takeover plan, not stupid bloody negative chanting.  Luckily enough there were enough people to drown them out with choruses of "Mariners".  Just because you don't agree with the chants does not make you "Fenty In".

Agree with most of that RJL but as it was your first game I would add that losing Jackson lost us any movement or sharpness in the box. Wilks would have been a better replacement but was absent I guess due to the loannee rules. Wilkos preference for Matt misfired badly. Vernam has played well in other games but after a good start seemed to lose heart. Likewise, I left on 75min for an earlier train.

The non chairman, the management and the players are simply just not good enough.

Yesterday we looked a side devoid of any ideas, confidence and skill - some of the first touches were embarrassing.

Long ball from goal kick - the seas parted and goal from their first attack.

We have to play Barnet, Port Vale and Chesterfield at home - three cup finals but on current form these I see as being dull draws at best.

I hate what Slade did to this club, no manager will get this lot winning

Although it was a division lower , when we were in the Conference there was one almost constant defender present and that was Pearson. Whoever he was paired with at the back he gave his all. During that time we had a good , solid defence which was a platform to build on. Although we never tore any trees up last season at least we had established ourselves back in the league and the centre-back pairing of Collins and Pearson never looked out of place. Along comes Slade and "engineers " Pearson out by delaying offering him a new deal until he was sure of securing Clarkes services. This IMO was a total smack in the face for a loyal player who still had much to offer. I think it's no coincidence that this seasons debacle at the back is partly due to Slade dumping Pearson ( who by the way is doing ok at Wrexham, is a firm fans favourite and could quite possibly be playing back in the league next season)
In fact when you look at all our player departures, they have mostly consisted of players who added to the squad and been replaced by inferior ones. I know it's only one match but yesterdays result shows we need a clean sweep of the team management structure with Wilko going and being replaced with a manager and assistant of his own choosing. I don't think we will go down but it will be a close call. Surely , if we do stay up, then the bulk of the money we get for league status should be used to fund a new manager as this will not impact on our normal match day and commercial incomes?

Just to completely take the thread off track I thought yesterday’s ref was one of the better ones. Gave a couple of really good advantages to both sides and also was brave enough to call his advantages back when the team in possession had no clear advantage.

Reffed it the same for both sides I thought.

Fully agree - we couldn't even blame the officials. Nor the opposition - who were nowhere near as good as previous Cambridge sides we've played in recent years.

The truth is that the players are simply not good enough. There is no pace and no penetration. They can't pass the ball or find a team mate. Clarke can't even kick the ball with his left foot - which was a bit of a problem since he was playing on the left side of the back three.

I see people wanting a manager who can "motivate" but frankly it's no good being a motivator if the basic ability isn't there.

Best chance to score yesterday was early in the 2nd half, nice bit of link up play by Matt and Hooper and it took a great save to deny us. If we managed to level it up it could of been oh so different.

Think we have the ability just right now belief and confidence is at an all time low.

Which is why I think we need a Phil brown type character even just until may, a big enough character to lift the place
