Thinking of doing a cruise for my holiday next year and wondered if anyone has been on any decent ones.

I'm not over fussed about going somewhere warm really, I'd prefer the Norwegian Fjords/Northern Lights or something similar.

Could only really be a 2 week one due to getting time off work so was wondering if anyone had any suggestions/recommendations?

Been on a cruise from Southampton to the Norwegian Fjords and it was great. If you enjoy that sort of scenery then you'll love it and you see some nice little towns as well.

In that case Les I would advise you to go on a 2 week Norwegian ,/ Fjords one mate.

It's something we have been looking into as well Les. We like the look of the small ship cruises, as they are not just floating towns, with masses of people aboard. They can also get further into the fjords than the bigger ships.

My sister did that the other year Ginny. The boat was the regular mailboat/ferry that shuttled up and down the coast in and out of the fjords. Food was excellent. Scenery superb as you'd expect.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.

Yeah, that's the sort of thing we have in mind. We love hopping around the Scottish Highlands on the ferries, so i'm sure we'd love that type of thing.

Went on one to Norway last year Les with Fred Olsens. Brilliant.

Nine days, sailed from Dover in May and looked after like royalty.
Called at Stavenger before seeing the fjords at their brilliant best.

Usually sort out holidays on internet but although now living in E.
Yorks I came over to Gy and got Hopps Travel to sort out a
great deal

Tell me to keep my nose out if you want Les, but would you be travelling solo?

The reason I ask is that I'm in the middle of a divorce and my daughter is pushing me to get away on a holiday somewhere to get me out of the doldrums

She went on a Caribbean cruise last year with her boyfriend and had a great time and has already booked one for next year and has told me that a cruise would probably suit me

As I've just "celebrated" 25 years of marriage, going on a holiday just by myself is a bit daunting to be honest, but a cruise might just be the answer, seeing different places and meeting other folk too

I'm not fussed about the far flung destinations but maybe one around the Med or one up around the Baltic might suit me....

I have a feeling though that they hit you with extra costs / surcharges, hence my initial question. Or are the lines now tapping in to the singles market rather than just couples?

If anyone has done a cruise by themselves I'd be interested to know... I don't mind mixing with people but also would want to avoid getting stuck on a singles table next to someone you can't get on with

Don't ask for much do I?

Not 100% sure yet. I'm going to ask my brother, who lives in Surrey, if he'd be interested. If he's not, then yes I would still look at going on my own. I'll let you know. Any yes, most sites I've looked at do charge a lot extra for single occupancy.

The one we were looking at recently was 2 for the price of 1, so i imagine they just want to hire out the cabins, and figure that 2 people in a cabin only costs them a bit extra in grub and bits and bobs, but there are 2 people spending on the boat to more than offset that.

Slightly of topic but has anyone got any experience in the stock market? reason being due to my pathetic pension plan I have been doing a bit of research on the stock market regarding long term investments, admittedly I'm a total novice but the one area that has caught my eye is the cruise line industry, although the cruise operators share of the travel industry is relatively small at present, they're very likely to grow because of our ageing population with an increase in longevity, hitting the 120 mark will not be uncommon in years to come, and what do old people want to do.....Go on a cruise.

Take this thread for example I bet you're all cracking on a bit, I'm not quite there yet so I've no interest at all in cruising but another ten years or so I could easily see myself on one, so what do you reckon savvy idea or to much risk?

Cheeky young whipper-snapper.... age is all relative!

I might be of interest to an 80 year old cougar if I do get to go cruising

As for stock market investments..... I don't think the likes of us plebs are ever going to make any money on the market.

IF your shares appreciate and you do get a chance to sell for a profit, by the time the commissions etc. have come out, the only winners usually are the financial institutions. Just ask Sid!

I did the Norwegian Fjords last summer with Cruise & Maritime. Very good. You want the smaller ships.

You should watch Sky Channel 256 Les, you'll get some great ideas from that show, and they have some good prices too. PLus their Vision Cruise web site is a good starting point.

Fjord line used to do mini cruises from Newcastle a few years back and I went on a couple, one to Bergen and the other to Gothenburg. The ships and facilities were great but we hit a force 9 gale on the way back from Gothenburg and of was quite scary even in a large ship.
They tried to serve breakfast for the few who weren't seasick but the plates would not stay on the table, this was around the middle of May, we also had a
blizzard for most of one day so going on deck was not possible. I am sure you will enjoy it but don't take a comfortable ride for granted

Okay, it's an outside inside cabin.

Prefer a nice view rather than looking at 4 walls when your in your cabin.

Have a good time Les... you'll have to keep us updated as to how you get on

Take it you've decided on that day of departure because it would be too painful going to FGR for our last game?

Oops! Should have gone to Specsavers

I just saw 5th May and not the year.... I'm already dreading the last game of this season so didn't look beyond that

You're right though Ginny... they'll be in League 2 next season I'm sure but I doubt we will be

You would think the prices the cruises charge they would have them fitted in the cabins already wouldnt you ?

To be honest I don't think it's that bad a deal really. £729 for a 7 night-cruise is only just over £100 a day which is full board (meals wise) and includes all your travel too.

You'd pay that for a half decent hotel here.
