Who are our top rivals historically would people say and why?

1 Hull  ( Still the top rival historically even though not played each other for year`s and I can only think a relic of the fishing and Humberside era`s? )
2 Scunny ( The recent sell out FA Cup game and sold out away end for the replay told you we still have an intense dislike for this close neighbour )
3 Lincoln ( Used to be like Hull are now we hadn`t played them for years but seemed to be joined at the hip last 10 years which has increased the rivalry )
4 Barnsley ( Top of the Yorkshire Derby contingent for me in so much as we played them H&A for years usually a game with goals )
5 FGR/Cheltenham  ( New kids on the block but another two sides Town fans love to hate from our recent history )

Odd one out
Stoke City ( Probably for all the wrong reasons this is a fixture that off the pitch seems to have no problem filling the ground especially at home)

All depends what era you started watching Town regularly really.

For me it was the 2 Sheffield Clubs, Barnsley and even Leeds to a certain extent when we were in the same Division for a while in the 80's.

As for Hull, I think we've only played them in competitive games a handful of time since I starting following Town

Obviously for the younger Town fans it's going to be Scunny and more recently Lincoln but I don't really see either as real rivals.

Growing up I felt like there was an intense distaste for anything Yorkshire, especially Hull and Sheffield. Probably Barnsley to an extent too. I feel like anytime Sheffield have been in town there was problems with fights and an intense feeling in the ground. It's a little different now because they have been in much higher leagues than us for years. Scunthorpe and Lincoln are usually packed out local derbies with a mad atmosphere. Everyone likes to stuff the Scunts especially it seems. They don't like us either.

Cheltenham was one that developed in non league, they dislike us too so it's a mutual thing I think FGR is a bit one sided. Most of their fans seem really nice when I've spoke to them and don't think of it as a nasty rivalry or anything like that lol. Bit salty when we beat them at Wembley though.

Hull is our natural derby for lots of reasons but would be no end of problems from both risk elements if we played them now , I personally dislike the Scunts more than the mud rats and as for the gimps when the cowleys disapear they will slide into their natural slot of third place in my derby days

Scunny always and above anyone else.

As Les said when younger any of the yorkie teams...Sheff Weds, Leeds, Barnsley not only with the football thing but with them being ever present during most of the summer in Cleethorpes as well, polluting the atmosphere with the awful dialect.

Always scunny for me, started going to watch Town late 60's and growing up in Brigg, plus 40 years on the steelworks,  I don't even want them to win the toss at the start of the game.

Hate the scunts

There's cheltenham supporters I work with, that despise town. I do find it somewhat strange though.

A couple of FGR fans I know say that the best atmosphere they ever had for a league conference game, was the 1-0 win we had in our last season n*n lea*#e

I'm 28 and don't remember a competitive game against Hull. I wish no ill on Lincoln but admit it is the closest thing to a derby we currently get.  I grew up watching the Sheffield clubs come to town and always enjoyed it when the massive Wednesday came to town.

Scunthorpe are big rivals but again, there have been very few meaningful games against them in the last 20 years.

I'm 35 and after beating Hull in the League Cup in one of the first games I went to, I don't think we've played them in a competitive game. I think I like the idea of a rivalry with Hull more than the reality of it, since the reality of it doesn't exist!

Lincoln I see as more of a gentle rivalry.  It's quite a pleasant city and an innocuous footballing rival for most of my time as a fan, though probably has grown the last five to ten years.

Scunny for me still the main one.  They're a similar type of town to us:  gritty, bit down on its luck, similar size, maligned and with some decent football names associated with them, so I suppose it's them.  One of my first away games being the Paul Reece Boxing Day penalty save game is probable part of it.  That and the John Cockerill winner in front of the Pontoon.

Always Scunny for me,

I do remember when  town player's could not get in our team always ended up at Scunny or Boston,

Although there was a time that us and them along with Lincoln all played in what is now the championship at the same time,

Some good derby's with good crowds,

Ah !!!  those were the days.

In the 80's when I first started going regularly Lincoln were a bit like an annoying little brother to be honest.

In fact if we didn't have a team in Grimsby I would probably support Lincoln over The Scunts or Mudrats even though those 2 are closer.

I would have to agree with 1mickylyons on this but previously I would have said Lincoln than Scunny in 2nd place until I was told about how much they loved it when we got relegated and how bitter they were towards us. At first I didn't understand why then someone told me that all our cast off's went there when they were no good for us and our support could out sing them regardless of how good we were in the league. Also a lot of the Scumthorpe ladies would go to Cleethorpes on a night out to get impregnated as to increase the gene pool at that one horse town, were everything stops when the traffic lights turn to red.

Supporting the Mighty Mariners for over 30 years, home town club is were the heart and soul is and it's great to be a part of it.

I suppose it's been so long (bar the FA Cup game, what 4 or 5 years ago when we played them?) that we've played Scunny, and even longer for Hull, that the 'local' rival is now Lincoln.

Barnsley, Sheffield Wed & Rotherham in days gone by.
Imp coach always over booked for these games 👊👊👊👊😂😂😂

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Still remember Graham Rathbone and Duncan Welbourne getting 8 week bans for holding a boxing match in the centre circle.

Now it appears that Town players would rather fight each other than opponents!
