Matt Dean has said on Twitter that Phil Brown has said he would be interested in the managerial role here and the league is irrelevant.

Now I for one would be happy with Phil as manager.

I can see him doing a good job IF he does not fall out with our non chairman.

Very worrying! Poor discipline and lots of odd maverick moves. He brought in Jeremy Kyle to do a team talk and played 7 defenders in a cup final!

Not for me. Let's have someone on the way up...

Phil Brown has enjoyed success and tasted failure in football management. Sometimes you know, tasting failure is the one of the most important experiences a manager can have.

There is no doubt that Brown is a well known character and figure in the world of football. Highly experienced and a name that would attract decent calibre players as we move forward. His connections and contacts are endless.

I have no idea what he is like as a coach, but I would imagine that he would come with an experienced coaching team too.

I would support the guy if he got the job, and think he is one of a number that could bring us success.

A cup final though. I think I remember those. Don't you have to win cup games to get to them?

Always got the impression that Phil Brown was more interested in Phil Brown than the club he managed. A lot of smoke and mirrors in his time at Hull. Spent massive money the club did not have on mediocre players who cost a fortune to get rid of when they were relegated. If he was as good as people say he would have been like Warnock and picked up again by a Championshp club somewhere a few years ago.

Please no. Big ego.  Read Southend comments. Prefer Elliott if compo is possible. Lets have a proper process and a wide field backed by some research.

The irony of this post. Basic research will point to the fact that the Boston manager doesn’t have to required qualifications to manage in the EFL.

If he's cheap, we'll have him

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

I remember hull playing arsenal away and winning a deserved win at that and their was other big scalps aswell, he had them playing really well first half of that season tbf. He was picked up by Preston a downward spiralling Preston who got relegated but probs not his fault .... do I want him not sure

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Anyone 'with a track record of success in non league and on the way up' would surely be managing in the EFL would they not?

Can anyone actually name such a candidate? A young, qualified, hungry manager who has managed his way to conference promotion but is somehow still managing........in the conference (or conference north)?!

No. Because they don't exist and it's just an easy, received idea.
Everyone is a gamble.

But he came from below is my point. So did Buckley and Slade Mk1. I think that is the way forward myself. Maybe not the Boston guy, but someone like him.

It's the only game in town for clubs like ours though IMO: spotting the best talent from non-league/L2, moulding a stable and successful structure around them and eventually making a profit from them, whether that be managers or players.

Phil Brown has been quite successful at all levels of the FL but for me he's not what we require.  He's generally had success when he's spent a fair amount of money whilst being unable to sustain those periods of form.  We need somebody who will make the kind of signings Bignot made but will take a more pragmatic approach.  With off the pitch upheaval looming and a dire need for structural reform at all levels of the club, the last thing we need is for the squad to be churned up once again in pursuit of short-term success when we're not in a position to sustain what we might achieve.

Phil Brown has a decent CV and has a couple of promotions under his belt at higher levels. Needs considering BUT so does his style and personality as this will dictate the sort of players he’ll bring in and the way we play.

Fenty has fallen out with Newell, Scott & Bignot who were all big personalities and relatively outspoken. They were, in their own ways, uncontrollable.

I’m not sure Brown is the right fit for this club. He seems to fall out with people easily and does odd things at odd times.

Not sure we need that at the club right now. We need a measured and pragmatic head, with a clear plan of attack and s commitment to bring the right sort of ‘people’ to the club. Because players are people too. Dis, Pearson, McKeown, etc. Hugely important part of squad building.

Can we stop calling Phil Brown a journey man?

Whilst he certainly isn’t my preferred choice (Stockdale if you’re wondering) he’s only managed 5 teams since ‘99. One of which was as a caretaker (Bolton I think). Of the 4 he’s managed full time 2 were for over 4 years.

Big personality which could be exactly what we need in the short term to keep us up. I'd be tempted to give him 6 months. Robbie Stockdale could be a good long term appointment but his lack of experience would be a risk in our current situation.

This discussion illustrates why I don'y envy JF in the decision making process, and why he should engage the trust.
At least we know from his experience that Phil Brown can lead footballers. We know Robbie Stockdale is a good coach but that doesn't mean he's a leader.
There are loads of great coaches who failed as managers.

The Trust have no more idea than he does in terms of appointing a Manager. That board need some sort of football experience sat on it the obvious people for me are Alan Buckley,John Mcdermott and Gary Croft  they all live local and have played and managed at various levels get one or all of them involved.

Sorry, but i don't agree with some of the people on here question his persona.

So what if the's egotistical. A lot of football players are. Yes, it's not the best personality in the world, but it's good to have confidence in what you do.

Look at Jose Mourinho and Pep. They're both similar in attitude and both come across "All about them". Yet they get the best out of the players and are 100% in what they do.

I prefer to judge a manager who has confidence and a performance record to match in their managerial duty's.

I am neither a disliker or liker of Brown. I'm just open to seeing what transpires as he has a good record of promotion and is confident in his approach.

Problem with Phil Brown is that he will be looking over his shoulder all of the time at the likes of bigger prospects in a higher league, and in doing so will have only one eye on the ball

You make a good point and this is why the Cowley`s have done so well the Lincoln fans feel relaxed that they won`t go anywhere except a much bigger Club and they believe they will see the job through. That type of Manager is what we need someone to build us up properly and get the Youth coming through I want to see young energetic players who want to play for the Club getting in the team. Not journeymen who don`t give a sh1t.

Problem with Phil Brown is that he will be looking over his shoulder all of the time at the likes of bigger prospects in a higher league, and in doing so will have only one eye on the ball

It could work both ways he could try and achieve with GTFC to get a step up.

The big question is could Brown get on with Fenty, ?

My thoughts are we would be looking for our 5th manager in 2years by the end of the season.

Problem is with the budget at the club   . We are a mid table lg2 club as it stands , nothing more nothing less . Unless we can get a manager to get the players to over achieve we are going to stagnate untill that season when we go down again . This appointment is as big as it gets imo . Let's now get behind the team and hope this isn't the season we go down ...... the manager needs the full backing of all attending fans from the get go . Let's forget about fenty and co for this season and put all our engery into staying up .  The fans are the club , the club is the town . The town is Great Grimsby .

At the end of the day if he's poached by a bigger club it means he's done a good job so that's fine with me. The gimps are kidding themselves if they think the Cowley's won't jump at the first sign of a lucrative offer.

Indeed. They have only to ask the Braintree fans.

Why is it? If we can afford to carry the massive squad we had last season and this, then all it takes is someone who can manage the budget much better, with a smaller, leaner squad of higher quality players. Any new manager will have plenty of scope to do this at the end of the season, given that we will have very few players left on contract in the summer. This was obviously what Slade was working toward and all he had to do to get there was win a game now and again.

Plenty of sides with smaller gates than us are outperforming us easily. Even with the low crowds we have had this season, we are still getting bigger crowds than some of the teams well above us. One thing you can't aim at the board is them not backing managers in signing players. Trouble is we have about ten too many, and they are all much of a muchness. This club is a great opportunity for any manager than can get it right. The fans are there waiting for someone we can get behind.

Or using their money more wisely. Imagine how many fans would come through our turnstiles if we were playing like Crawley, scoring goals for fun and winning almost every week. Without the Town fans on Saturday, they would have had less than 2000 in the crowd. If we can't compete with them, we may as well give up now.

The right Manager brought in or one who captures the imagination of the fans will get unwavering support at the start were flipping desperate for someone to get behind. Let`s say it`s Wilko for arguments sake and he wins 6 of the last games playing good football the right bloke will get gates in excess of 5k here no problem. Those gates in Lg 2 terms are very good like others say lets have a small quality squad with a few youth players and a couple of loaness to take us to around 25 players total.I really want to see a local lad come through and make the team and what better way than with another local lad picking him.C`mon Wilko and Moore make the job yours.UTM
