I remember that Hurst prefered Tomlinson to Podge at one point (against Braintree for example) which I never understood

I was at that game. Bumped into the Fenty Bros. at half time. I asked if they were extending Tomlinson's loan period as it had been mooted and they said.. "More than probably, yes. Don't worry about Ben, he'll come good". I said,, "You're kidding aren't ya" I then listed all of the attributes he didn't have as a footballer, listed what Podge and Omar had, and added.. "Surely there's someone out there better than him!"

It always sticks out in my mind. A complete lack of footballing acumen coupled with the promise of stick with it, it'll come good one day. That one short conversation sort of epitimoses the whole Fenty reign really in my mind. Lots of enthusiasm, a lack of game intelligence and a plea of stick with it, things will turn around. I admire JF's fortitude and commitment but hope more for the club than he can offer one day..

Thing about Podge is that he scores goals but does little else when it comes to working the defenders, so I can sort of see why Slade wasn't interested.

Only problem here is that our other strikers don't score goals or do anything else much!

He's not been tearing up any trees this season but I fully expect him to score against us yet again.

Watched him on TV the other day, constantly on the move in the box a real threat to us tomorrow

Yes he was making such a poor contribution towards promotion before Hurst dropped him, scoring a measily 20 goals in th first half of the season 😉
