If this was end of last season, i would be gutted.
Right now, i couldn't care less, nothing i hate more than when someone gives 0 effort and isn't arsed about our football club.

If Jones was going down the leagues then I would say it's because he's not producing on the pitch. But as it's a top Lge 1 team who are after him, why would they want him if he's lazy and not putting in the effort?
Maybe it's not Jones who's the problem...

I'd be amazed if Scunthorpe were interested personally.
Unless he is playing seriously out of position, he's not shown too much this season to indicate that he would be capable of playing in a higher division. More worryingly is that his fitness doesn't seem a great deal better than last season when you could perhaps forgive him a little for not being able to last the full game.
Too much half-arsed jogging around on show from him in the past month or two especially and he's missed some great opportunities to set up chances because his head has been down when he has got the ball.

If a scunny scout has watched Jones in the last couple of months I don't think will be recommending they sign him. His level at the moment would be more like Skellingthorpe than Scunthorpe. He's like a sulky little kid.

I would be amazed. He would not get a game in a team at the top of league 1 unless he is so demotivated at the present time that we are not seeing the best of him. There is a player in there but he is still very raw and needs to realise football is a team game.

After looking fairly average in the National League, Alex Rodman is now doing well at a League 1 club gunning for promotion to the Championship.
I've always believed that 50% of players in L1 & L2 are much of a muchness, and the way you sign the best is by bringing out the best in them.
Until Podge signed for us, no one had been able to get 20+ goals out of him in a season, let alone 30.
I haven't been to many matches this season so my judgment on Sam Jones is based on what I saw last season (and in the handful of games I've seen this season):
He's definitely good enough to prosper in League 2. Players don't turn crap overnight. Reading between the lines, he probably isn't enjoying playing in this Slade team because it doesn't suit his strengths.
He's stopped scoring, he's not getting the same amount of chances, he's lost confidence and therefore lost form.
We need to get him back on it, and I wish we had a manager and a coaching set-up that was able to work with players when they lose form rather than take the easy decision to get rid and bring in someone else, because the cycle will only get repeated.

If the monies right then get rid we only want players here who want to be at the club and are willing to give 100% and there are a few other players here in the same boat as Jones also !!! it’s quite obvious to see that he hasn’t been interested in ages his heads down lethargic slow not arsed attitude we don’t need players like that at this club

Jones is just about the best footballer we have, but we cannot seem to get the best out of him. I thought he came as an attacking midfielder? A striking role doesn't seem to suit him, and let us be honest if we had any decent strikers he wouldn't be playing up front would he?
I would certainly want to keep him - you cannot afford to keep losing your best players.

He'd be more effective in a good team. Has real quality, something is sadly not right at the minute. He's one of a couple in our squad that has the potential to play higher up.
He's bang out of form at the minute though.

Why you’d allow one of the very few players at the club with some ability to leave is beyond me! Especially considering Slade’s dreadful recruitment so far.
Unlikely I know, but we need to be moving the likes of Dixon, Hooper, Woolford, Kelly etc on if we’re looking to free up funds for Slade to go out and waste.

Scunny went for Margetts( sp?) from Lincoln a couple of years which baffled the fans as he was nothing too great, but let's face facts, they're now an established, forward looking club prepared to take a punt on players. If it works out, great, if not then they'll write it off. Must be lovely

Jones hasn't looked great for a while but there could be many reasons for this. It could be that he doesn't like Slade or his tactics. He might not feel comfortable playing the striker role. MB brought him in as an attacking midfielder but utilised him as a striker. Like a lot of MB's signings he wanted to find out if they were adaptable to play other roles than the one they were used to. We don't know how MB would have used him but Slade persists in using him as an out and out striker. I think Jones would be more effective playing just behind the front two but that doesn't fit in with Slades preferred 4-4-2.

I have no doubts Jones is capable of playing League 1. He is our most talented player and has gone off the boil recently, same as the whole team to be fair. I really despair of people saying stuff like "i will drive him there". Even the best players go off the boil now and again and it must be difficult playing in a side that has so little attacking play. I'd be sad to see him go if true.

Interesting they say "mid fielder" when he has only really been a make shift striker under both Bignot & Slade. I think we need to cut the lad some slack to be honest this is the highest level he's played at in what has been a modest part time career, it won't always go right especially in such a one dimensional team, I'd be sorry to see him go but as he was a Bignot last minute signing he will probably free up a fair chunk of payroll and as he is contracted I assume we'd ask a decent fee .................Or a swap for Townsend........... only joking with that BTW.

Asante looked decent in his debut for us and scored. He looked no worse than Hooper has and has had far less games to impress, who knows what the criteria is for a striker to make it onto Slades team sheet.

Pure guesswork here, but did Jones get the nod, from his agent or even the club, early December that scunny were very interested, but Slade/the club told him no way unless it was stupid money. This obviously upset him and he's been playing with a right old monk on ever since.

If in fact scunny do want him it just goes to show how badly we have managed him this season. I'm also surprised at the comments wanting him out as you can probably count on one or two fingers how many better players we currently have in the squad.

Jones is one of only 5 players in the current squad I would care if he left. Attitude leaves something to be worked on, try him in centre mid alongside Summerfield but do not offload your better players when the rest of the squad is a disgrace. Unless he is too young and quick to fit in?

Agreed last season I was raving about him but unfortunately this year is only a shadow of the player that first came? You really must ask why

One of our only exciting players, our current top goal scorer (I think?), and more importantly less than a year into being a professional footballer, and there’s some fans offering to drive him to our local rivals.
The famous fans of Grimsby Town, everybody.
Jesus Christ, he might not be in the best of form, but no one really is at the minute! Who are these better players we’re gonna replace him with??

A more plausible explanation has already been made. He's aware that a higher league club are interested, that that would mean more money and that he would really quite like to go. Let's not forget how Omar's form dipped in the transfer window. Yes, he's one of our more talented players but not if he can't be arsed.

Wouldn't want to see one of our best players leave. Might be on a bit of a slump in form and he still has things to learn, but no way would I be happy to lose him.

Another thread where spitefulness and a bunch of assumptions are the order of the day.
For me - a good player who isn't being managed effectively and is playing in a cr@p team that doesn't allow him to express his assets often enough.
I'd be surprised if he'd impressed an ambitious L1 club though (given some recent indifferent performances), and am even more surprised that some fans would evidently like to get rid of him, given that he is one of the better players in a big squad of largely average types.
You put him in Luton's team, and he'd be knocking on the L1 door for sure.

The famous fans of Grimsby Town
I take it you have never looked at another teams message board. Or spoken to supporters of other teams. I don’t agree with the posters that slag him off and I would love to see him stay. Be properly managed and to prove to the doubters what he is capable of. But if you think this sort of reaction is exclusive to GTFC fans you are very very naive indeed.

He’s not on form and definitely a sulker, that’s for sure. He’s the only centre forward we’ve got though that can put his foot on the ball and roll a defender. He didn’t have the best of games on Saturday but because of the poor squad we’ve put together, we had no better options. Imagine going in to games with our first choice partnership being Vernon and Hooper or Hooper and Matt? It’s not good enough. Jones is a steady player for this level. Playing well short of his best but we need to stick by him and hopefully keep him.

Most players do their best to play to the instructions of their manager even when those instructions don't suit their game but if those instructions are shite it makes the player look shite. If those instructions were to go out and play your game that you feel happy with and ignore all the "expert" instructions from a hasbeen who neverwas I am sure we would see a better and happier bunch of players [and supporters]

All efforts must be made to retain Jones and other promising younger players. We need a goalscorer, goalie and a left back. Contract negotiations of existing players are as important as signings at this stage.

What I'm not quite sure about regarding Jones and also Osbourne is that both apparently believe that an attacking midfield role is their strongest position. Despite this, neither Bignot or Slade ever really played them in this sort of a role. Heck, Slade ended up sticking Jones out on the wing in his failed formation at the start of the season. Osbourne played out wide as often as not as well.
To some degree, I wonder if their respective Conference teams were willing to shape their style of play around the two because they were good enough to make a difference at that level. In the League? Perhaps less so.
Regardless, a pity that we've not seen the best of either of them often enough.

It tells you everything you need to know when people are saying he's our best striker, and he isn't even a striker. The guys has bags of ability on the ball, but it's very hard for him to do anything when the balls always flying in at head height. With regards to his attitude, I get the impression he's sick to the back teeth with they style of play like the rest of us. It does make you wonder how entertaining we could be to watch with the likes of Osbourne, jones and dembele allowed to play with flair and freedom in the same team, but sadly that'll never happen.

I've seen Scunny a few times this season, and I think Jones would only be on the bench at best, i can only imagine that their highly rated attacking midfielder Adelakun is likely to be going to Hull, and with Paddy Madden leaving as well, they're looking for a cheap replacement to add to their squad. If he wants regular football he'd be better off staying here, and concentrating on improving his own game, and helping the team in general, rather than sulking and strolling around when things aren't going his way.

Some of the criticism of Sam Jones on here is harsh for a player constantly played out of position who just looks like he's lost form and possibly some confidence.

He's lost form and confidence, which most people can forgive. It's the apparent lack of effort that is the problem. If he pressed off the ball, moved into space and showed some signs that he wants to fight for the team, then I'd be happy that he's in the team because he has the talent to make things happen when the form returns. Unfortunately, he's been a passenger for quite a while.
I'd be sad to see probably our most talented footballer leave, but if he doesn't want to be here then it's no good keeping him. Hopefully we get a bit of money to bring somebody in who will make a difference.

Jones is out of form BUT he is our best player in my opinion certainly attacking wise.Jones,Osborne and Dembele are the threat we carry and Ozzy is at Solihull if we lose one or both of the others what`s the point?

Jones is most likely playing to instructions whatever they are. I think it's the instructors fault with most of our players.

Absolutely, there was a thread on here earlier in the season speculating about the defence and whether they being instructed to play in the way they were. Then an interview with Collins came out and basically detailed the instructions they were given.
