I’m not even sure Van Dijk is that good! What would Baresi or Maldini have been worth in today’s market ?

It's the knock on effect too. Now that Van Dijk has gone for 75 million, Johnny Evans's value probably goes from 20 million to 30 million, just because it can. Crazy.

Swansea sack Clement Wednesday sack Carvalhal Boro sack Monk (after winning) Swansea appoint Carvalhal Monk second favourite for Wednesday Liverpool pay £75m for Virgil van Dijk
Monk was sacked purely because he went behind Boro's back to speak to Swansea. The chairman found out on the day of the Sheff Wed game (which they won) and then decided to sack him on the night. Monk had told the chairman he couldn't attend a planned meeting with him regarding the January window as he had a family emergency (which turned out to be him travelling down & speaking to Swansea).

The numbers involved in transfer fees, wages and bonuses is beyond my comprehension.
Someone once told me that it's literally not worth Gareth Bale's time to pick up a £1 coin from the floor. In the time it takes him to pick it up, he'd have earned more from his Real Madrid contract.
The guy is earning more than £1 a second, even while he's sleeping. Messi, Ronaldo and plenty of Man City players will be earning at the same rate, and that's before we talk about transfer fees.
I thought Shearer joining Newcastle for £15m was pretty mental at the time because I don't think transfer fees had even reached £10m when this blew them out of the water.
Average Premier League players are commanding £20-30m transfer fees and wages in the £100k p/w. The gulf between that and even the average Championship player is remarkable.

I don't think there's a single defender anywhere near that good these days. So probably about £1000000000000!

Thats what happens when there is so much money in the prem. Championships clubs spending more to get to the big time which also means some owners are not happy if they fail. If more money was filtered down the leagues it might help a little.

I know what you mean but that's not correct is it? Unless picking up the £1 coin prevented him from receiving his pay from Madrid. Either way, the whole thing is mad. There's something seriously wrong in a society where people earn astronomical sums and there's people sleeping rough in places like Cleethorpes.

Football is not that big. If you added all the football teams in the country together they wouldn't even make a FTSE 100 company. Compared to the Googles and Apples of this world even our biggest football clubs are corner shops.

Imagine how if companies were not so heavily taxed and regulated and therefore forced to plant their resources into off-shore tax-heavens, trillions and trillions of resources could be used on creating a heaven on Earth. This thread has quickly moved away from football

Can't divorce football from politics. Especially when it comes to discussion of players' wages at the top level.

It's both symptomatic and emblematic though Rob. Same issue with CEOs receiving umpteen multiples of average employees wages. If someone is getting £5million a year gross then tax the buggers £4m. You can take a lot of people off the streets for that. £1m ought to be enough to get by on. If they don't like it and swan off abroad. If they're good enough.

Without Julie Andrews and Mary Tyler Moore he will be hopeless.

One of my xmas presents was David Beckham aftershave. It's really nice and must have taken him a lot of time and effort to make-how he found the time I don't know-what with writing all his books and attending garden parties for charity the guy deserves a medal in the New Years honours list or even made a SIR.

Be careful, read the label. It’s actually facial hair restorer.

Whilst I agree this is true for the lower leagues, I'm not convinced for the Premier League. The income they get for ticket sales is dwarfed by what they get for TV rights - all the clubs are selling is a brand now, that is why you have so many tourist fans nowadays.

The Germans have the right idea. Clubs have to be 51 percent owned by fans (or so I believe) and, hey presto, ticket prices are reasonable!
Sure, they can't compete financially with the big English, Spanish and Italian clubs, but they do develop a lot more players because of this.

Except for Bayern Munich who as a result have won the last 27 titles!

So as a club like Bournemouth, Swansea, Palace may make between 5-10 million from tickets but around £100 million from TV, why don't they properly subsidise them, say £10 each, probably if they were fan owned this could be done.
