Would be another clever move if he can do it. My bet is he knows the Shrews are at a peak now. As teams suss out their system and goals start to be hard to get, they will have to work hard and be lucky to go further. They have built up expectations with a good start to the season but a few more losses could turn it sour for him. So why not take a punt at this? Who would blame him for having a go while he’s on a roll? A decent payday, win or lose. It could lead to even better but even if he fails he wouldn’t be too damaged because everyone knows what Sunderland is like for managers.

“If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind.”

Sunderland have taken a gamble before on plenty of other managers (and players). Many have ended in failure.  Hurst has nothing to lose.

Fair play to him. I agree with Ron and Rich.

He's already had experience of fans of a historic club with high expectations.

Seriously, apart from help with the PR side, I reckon he could do it. They'll have players of good enough quality and he can build a team to grind out results.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

Saw this link and had a quick look on the Shrewsbury forum to see their reactions. One comment made me laugh out loud.

Why would you move to club that we could conceivably replace in the Championship next season?

Pretty sure we were saying a similar thing about lge 1 this time last year.

According to this, he's due to attend a press conference this afternoon, but it doesn't say whether it's at Shrewsbury or Sunderland.

They're flipping clueless, joined from Grimsby town 18 months ago. Celebrated one year in charge last week.
