Watch enthusiasts ?

In the late 60's a bloke used to come into the builders yard where I worked,

He was always flashing his full wallet about and his precious watch,

One day I was asked how much it cost I gave him a silly low figure,

He nearly fainted and said it cost me over £200 which was a load of money in those days,

I then said  " what time is it ? " he said 10 past 4,

I replied looking at my very cheap watch, that's funny that's what mine says,

He never bragged about his watch or flashed his money again.

I developed a keen interest in vintage watches about 15 years ago. I particularly like Omega, IWC, Longines,  Rolex, JLC and Zenith gold dress watches.   They all have a long and interesting history, producing numerous innovations and new designs.

2 of my favourite watches are still a gold-filled Omega Seamaster from 1955 and a Seiko divers watch from the early 1970s.  The Seiko has "waterproof" on the dial, which was soon changed to the more common "water resistant" in all watches soon after this date.  I picked up the divers watch in the Forces.    

Anyone interested in mechanical watches will often note what watches other people are wearing.  Always good to see another nice watch.  

I've got a Longines gold dress watch that was my Grandad's. Must be 60 years old but was serviced for me before Christmas and keeps great time. Bit different to the chunky, silver Style that are popular currently but I love it.

My wife bought me a beautiful Tissot for a wedding present and I love it. Best watch I've had and I've had a Rolex and a couple of Tags. It has a great altimeter on it too which is remarkably accurate once calibrated. Use it on the mountains.

I've got a few old Omegas including some 50s and 60's Seamasters but my favourite is my Omega Constellation Pie Pan.
I also own an old 70s Seiko which belonged to my old man which obviously i can never get rid of.
I love the IWCs but I only have small wrists so 40mm is about as big as i like to go

Got a few watches.  Only Swiss one I have is an Oris Aquis, I love the sunburst effect of the dial.  Also got a Citizen Navihawk (Red Arrows edition), a Seiko Recraft and a couple of Orients.  

On my wishlist at the mo are a G-Shock Gulfmaster, an Orient Sun & Moon Blue Dial and a Sinn Flieger.       

Just thought I’d revisit this subject because at the grand old age of 43 I thought it was about time to get myself a nice Swiss watch. When this subject was posted nearly a year ago I didn’t bother to look because I’d no appreciation for a luxuary watch, It seems I’ve been stuck in the watch matrix all my adult life and for some reason never come close to owning one. Well the story goes that I’ve always been happy with my 2 G shock watches one has a rubber strap that I wear for work and the other has a metal strap I tend to wear if I’m going out for the night so far so good.

But then a few weeks ago the one with the metal strap had gone faulty so I said to the wife I’m going to Argos to treat myself to a really smart watch for our holiday to replace the G shock, but then she said don’t you think by now at your age you should be wearing a special watch, one that is going to last you a lifetime! Well that was it my eyes were open and I spent the rest of the night on the internet looking at Swiss watches before flying to Rhodes In the morning.
Anyway at the resort I just couldn’t stop thinking about this watch that I might be spending up to a £1000 on, so on a day trip to Rhodes town I couldn’t believe my luck when I saw a Swiss watch shop I was straight in there and came so close to buying a Tagg formula 1, the bird in the shop even had the champagne out ready but I just felt I was rushing in to it and it seemed so much money.

Anyway back at the resort I was back online looking at all the watches in my budget when I promised myself I’d definitely get this Tagg when we got home. Until that is I stumbled upon this you tuber called the Urban Gentry and thanks to this twit my budget as now skyrocketed, but to be fair he has given me a bit of a watch education and now I’m pleased that I didn’t buy the Tagg although it’s still a good watch to be fair.
So I’ve been home 2 weeks now and after hours and hours of obsessive research I’ve decided that the watch I really want is a divers watch and it’s got to be the Omega Seamaster 300m with the blue dial for me, I think it’s a stunning looking watch with great prestige and history, admittedly I’ve not seen it in the flesh yet and as I’m chomping at the bit I was all set to go to Meadowhall this weekend (no Omega stockist in Grimsby) but now I’ve just seen that Omega have upgraded the Seamaster watch to be released later this year WTF!

So now my head is done in with it all because the upgraded Seamaster looks amazing too but I’ve got no patience so I feel like sacking the watch off now and getting my G shock repaired, the only other watch on par for me aesthetically is the Rolex submariner mega expensive but again beautiful watch, but I’m put off by the name if I’m honest Rolex as it seems to of been hijacked by the blinged wannabe gangster.
Anyway to wrap up has anyone bought any watches from this grey market? The prices advertised are really good 20/30% savings and the reviews for sites like Swiss watches direct and iconic watches are fantastic it says you get everything you would get from a registered shop including manufacturers warranty and stamping.

Have a look at the Tissot T Touch. Quality watch that looks great and has brilliant multi-function for about £700. Could be the quality Swiss timepiece you're looking for without spending a grand or more.

It’s a good looking watch but I’ve got my heart set on a pro diving watch now, I dont think I will ever go diving but there’s something about these watches that have drawn me in.
