This story is indirectly linked to Paul Hurst as a player.

The day of the Eastleigh away game, my wife wanted us to go to Whitby and stay with her Dad. I said that we could go early Thu night (from York) only  IF I could find a pub showing the game on BT Sport. Women eh?

There was only 1 pub listed.  I rang them and asked (very nicely)  if they would be showing the game, if I bought a few pints?   The landlord said yes, even though I got the impression that he had never heard of Eastleigh. I left my name for reference, just in case.

I got to the pub at 1940 hrs.  The World Championship snooker was on.  There were a few blokes watching it as well.  My face dropped.  I asked the young barman about putting the game on.  He looked blankly at me.  Oh no.  Then the landlord said "are you the footy fan from York?".  My saviour.

The landlord said that he used to drink with Paul Hurst in Rotherham.  He therefore had an affinity with Grimsby Town.  What a coincidence.  I was so lucky.

He immediately put the game on for me, despite the delayed kick-off. Even though they only had one  TV.   The more pints I bought the louder the TV volume increased.  I even bought some very tasty whitby scampi and chips to keep in with the pub and to repay my gratitude.

The snooker went back on the minute the game finished.  Fair play to them. I had seen enough.

I am glad that the snooker fans were very understanding. and even gave me some good-natured stick for supporting Grimsby.  (Years ago I was in the RAF at nearby Fylingdales, we tended to keep away from Whitby as some of the local youths were not very friendly, to say the least).
