Lots of big town clubs without a top level football or rugby league team and lots of smallish places who do!

Poole must be close to 150,000 people and as someone posted above Burnley is quite small & Accrington less than 45k

Probably means that all this has no relevance to life as we know it!!!

Don't forget that the boroughs surrounding Burnley have pretty similar populations themselves and no professional clubs (other than one with Accrington).

This immediately more than trebles the population number for Burnley. They are also a pretty well-supported club historically as well.

N.E. Lincs isn't that big population-wise, but we won't get too many of our fans from the surrounding boroughs due to support for Scunny and the Gimps. Or so I suspect.

I think Warrington is the biggest place that doesn't have a professional football club.

Obviously we know from this year's FA Cup that they do have a team, but it's unlikely it'll ever thrive when rugby league dominates so much.

St Helens - population of 102,000. Average gate at Langtree Park for Saints is about 14,500

Goodison and Anfield are 12 miles away and United and City about 25. Credit due.

They make some noise as well - least they did when they played at Knowsley Road.

Have to say - went to one game a few years back and realised why they call football the beautiful game.

I went to see Warrington in 2002 as the ground was a stones throw from where I lived. Ticket price was £3. Attendance was 17. Home and away. They still had a little kiosk selling pies.

I was surprised like Rob about the size of Eastleigh. It probably never really developed a football club because as it grew it had Soton on the doorstep. It's a total guess but I'm assuming that most of the growth was in the later 20th century unlike GY.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

It just said on BT Sport the population of Forest Green ( Nailsworth ) is about 6,000  talk about punching above your weight.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”
