They can. They just have to win every game. EASY

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

Erm, not if one of the three teams above us wins all their games, in fact they don't have to do that.

They don't that's true, but if we finished the season on 95 points there's a damn good chance we would be champions.

It is still possible, so we still have to believe we can do it, a win tomorrow will be a good start.

Not enough games left in my opinion we have to win all our games and hope the teams above lose at least three it's highly unlikely play offs at best is my hope.

Pity he or the club have not preached this from day one of the season instead of it being "imperative to make the play offs", that way he may have gone full tilt at winning games rather than trying to avoid defeat.
Even after losing to Bristol he said it wasnt that bad a result didnt he?

The guy constantly talks up how a point away is a good result, or how drawing isnt a terrible result.

We are effectively still playing to ensure the play off's never mind the title, take care of the wins and the table will take care of itself.

Nice surprise to hear him say something positive, the reaction to the Rovers game irritated me so much it is nice he seems to be offering a positive viewpoint.  I must say I personally disagree with him though, we are too far off in my opinion.  Hope to be wrong.

It might be "unlikely" but it is certainly possible. I believe we're going up anyway, one way or the other.

Some tricky looking games for the top teams tomorrow. We must beat Braintree. No excuses.

Did he actually say "I've not given up on winning the league"? or is this your interpretation? because if he did it would be a first on me.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Exactly, I know it probably won't happen but if Bristol lose at Gateshead & Barnet only draw at Alty, a win for us would leave us 5 points off the top & with a game in hand, certainly not impossible. I'm sure there will be lots of twists & turns in the final run in just hope Town keep focused & pick up a near maximum points

Today's game will not be easy. Braintree are quite capable of making life difficult for us and we certainly must take any chance which comes our way. I am not confident of a win.

I think there's far too much emphasis put on whether Hurst is trying to win the league or just settle for the play offs. The only time it is relevant is probably at the start of the season when the squad is being assembled. ie. Are we pushing the boat out to sign the very best players.  Once that's done we are surely trying to pick up as many points as possible. There is never game where we say "doesn't matter if we lose this one because we're not going for the title". He may try to put a positive spin on a poor result after the event but that's different.

This. People put far too much emphasis on post match interviews. I'd be far more worried if he came out and slated the team after a defeat.

Exactly. You can't really read what he genuinely means - like most managers he plays down the importance of individual results, be they wins or losses. He's level headed / boring!

Over recent seasons many of us, including myself, have expressed concerns that we drew too many games. Turning draws into wins would have resulted in higher finishes and maybe even put serious pressure on the eventual title winners.

Interestingly we haven't drawn a league game since Nov. We have certainly suffered too many defeats, especially at home, but if we could have drawn a couple of those we would be much better off

Going to be very tough to win the league  but nothing within reason is impossible. However having done the double over Barnet which I would have never envisaged gives me hope if we do reach the play offs we can finally get out of this league

There's only Bristol who are on an upward trajectory, which they are timing to perfection. We have been stuck in 4th spot for months now because every time we have a chance to make ground we blow it. There isn't much movement at all among the other contenders.

As with last season, i have never thought at any stage that we could win the league as we just don't have enough goals in us. Interestingly, Bristol have scored fewer and only better our defence by 3 but crucially have only lost 4 games all season and without checking, they are obviously not losing the 6 pointers.

Our inability to finish off the opposition is again costing us and will continue to do so. Last seasons home play off game against Gateshead being a prime example of not being ruthless enough. Nothing has changed for me. Play offs beckon and if we don't bring our shooting boots, then we'll still be a Conference side next year.

I agree, and good point about the Gateshead play off game. The weaknesses that we've displayed for 2 seasons or more and that we haven't addressed are what worry me. I feel we'll need a lot of luck to get promoted and there isn't usually too much of that around in the conference. Once you're needing rivals to falter, you're in the lap of the gods.

We are wasteful in front of goal, we're not attack-minded enough, too often our play lacks urgency and speed of movement and our players are often too far apart from each other when we're in possession. These are fundamental, long standing flaws in our set up for me and they remain unresolved.

For me, the problem is that we've never managed to sort out the central midfield area and we can't compete well enough against the best clubs in the middle of the park. The home defeats against Bristol Rovers and Macclesfield were a case in point as we were second to pretty much every ball throughout both of those games, not to mention the almost unmentionable results against Lincoln who were too big and aggressive for us! Reading the Barnet fans' comments about our victory the other week, they were bemoaning the lack of pace and strength in their midfield which perhaps helps to explain why we were able to match up against them more easily. I think Akinde's goals are most of the reason they are up at the top, not the overall quality of their team.

For us, I think our central midfielders are badly lacking in pace and physicality in comparison to some teams and agree with Chaos that we will probably need to have a bit of luck to win promotion through the play-offs as we don't play well consistently enough to overcome our general weaknesses.

Of course, I'd love to be proved wrong.

Amen to that.

You seldom hear much passion or surprising insights from many successful managers - Morinho, Wegner, Rodgers etc - even Richard Money at Cambridge was downbeat on TV after their great Cup home match versus Manchester Red Devils Sox Inc.

I'm sure we would all like to hear PH be a bit more cheery on occasion, but this fans' preoccupation with Hurst's low-key pronouncements is more than a bit unreasonable, and seemed to start right at the beginning of the season, after the GOOD draw away at Bristol.

Macclesfield too.

I agree completely with the rest. Some interesting stats on here: http://www.soccerstats.com/table.asp?league=england5&tid=f

Interesting to note that we score more than one per game in only 33% of games, whereas Bristol Rovers (likely champions) score more than one in 40% of games.

Dont panic.....normal service resumed in todays paper...... i would take 1-0 wins for the rest of the season......if you would have offered 1-0 before the Telford game i would have taken it.......we should have just put the ball in the corners on Tuesday instead of continuing to play pretty football...

Some sensibility in what he is saying about being professional and ensuring the win by killing off the game in the final minutes but i would have taken a 1-0 win against the rock bottom team who have conceded an average of 2+ goals per game, c'mon Paul inspire us FFS.
