What is Paul Hurst playing at. Has he realised that promotion is the priority and 75% of the fans want to be knocked out of this tin pot competition.

It's not that weakened. Clay and paddy lacking game time but hardly reserves. Walker is obviously inexperienced but at least he's playing with decent players around him to really measure his progress.

To me i felt there, that paul felt angry/dissapointed at aswad, but i think he's gone, for PH to come out and say what he said, dont feel theres a way back for aswad whatever he has done

Sounds like a typical Town away performance, defensive and hoping something might happen. Given we are playing v narrow midfield to stop them playing (like the home match) they seem to have a lot of time and space to play

I don't understand the team selection I really don't. Yet again.
Still, I couldn't give a toss if we win or lose tonight.
Not surprised to hear Aswad no closer to returning and that a signing is not imminent. Business as usual.

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

Sad to hear the news filtering through about Aswad.  A great player on his day but he's clearly unwell and needs to get better.  It seems like the best way for him to get the support he needs is to move back South.  None of us know the facts (yet) so we should wish him well.

In other news, Paddy has just scored a worldie, for those who care.

i personally want us to win every game! we've had fans who have travelled tonight, the players should win it for them!!

I think this silly cup could stop us getting promoted,

More bad weather on way so even if we win tonight,

The Wrexham game could be postponed leaving us having to rearrange more league games,

I never want us to lose but tonight I will make an exception.

Well the team can play well and draw,

BUT

Lose on pens,

That does not count as a loss does it ?

Sounds like if we neutralise Oster in the second half (stick Clay on him), Gateshead threat will be much reduced.

Then last 20 minutes, bring on LJL, Hannah and Mackreth to win the game.

If we are to reach the final of this cup,

We will have to postpone 5 more games,

Fitting them in will effect us getting out of this league,

Whats more important getting back into the league or winning this cup ?

George Kerr can eat my shorts after his comments in the Scunny v Town game last year. He's dismal.

I actually don't mind going 2-1 down. We'll be much better off playing the league game on Saturday and being out of this tinpot, two-bit cup. Let the 'going nowhere fast' midtable types fight it out for the 10 bob prize money.

Start to remove the first XI players now to preserve for Saturday.  Disley for starters, should be getting a well-earned rest.

WTF we didn't sign John Oster a few years ago. We should have signed him before he went to Barnet

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

53 Town fans there.

About 50 more than I thought there'd be.

Hats off to each and every one of them.

I hate the FAT with a passion.  It disrupts the prime aim of the club and only the winners really gain.  However,  it is still hard to will your team to lose when 99% of the time you want them to win!

I do not know Aswad personally.  However, I  always felt that he was more sensitive than most players.  This always presents the situation where he may move on (for whatever reason).  If so, good luck, thanks for the many fine performances, and we move on.

I will particularly remember his great cross to Hannah that beat Wrexham 1-0 in a midweek game a few seasons ago.  Right in front of the Pontoon as well.  And late in the game.

I can't help falling in love with you

(that's Town not the 7 pinters Woz).

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,

Season defining moment- onwards and upwards - FA Trophy AND promotion. So what if we have to play more games - we'll have a team in the groove, positive and having a winning mentality without time to train that out of them..

To quote - Insanely amazing or amazingly insane. Life as a Town Fan.

Lennie injury - looks serious. Why does he even need to be on the pitch? Real question marks over tonights selection for me.

What we need is 2 players to see red so that they can high-five in the dressing room.  And McKeown to make a very simple mistake leading directly to a goal.  Would never happen at Gateshead though. Would it?

Assume Hurst isn't too worried about going out as he's done nothing to counter Oster. It's probably one of the rare occasions when you should adapt to the opposition.

They are five points of a play off place with 3 games in hand. So this match, and further matches in this competition will hardly do them any favours either.

At the end of the day I guess it all comes down to money. A big pay day at Wembley is too tempting a prospect for either club to turn down.

It's only a big pay day if anyone turns up, the FA don't give that much money. Some of the crowds have been very small for the FAT finals

If you think the Wrexham trophy final was a great day out then you've got a strange concept of a good day out!

Did you also think that the two 1998 trips to Wembley were not great days out? If we had beaten Wrexham that day... No one would be saying that this is a tin pot cup!

God, it was bloody cold that day. We were outplayed, but if not for that stupid penalty we would have won and would probably now have found memories of it.

THIS:- I couldn't get to my pick up place due to the snow and paid £88.00 single to get to London by train to freeze for 4 hours. Never been that cold EVER at a game. A lad 2 rows in front of us got hypothermia and had to be tended to by St John's Ambulance

We got to play at wembley, something that may not happen for years again. It gave a new generation of town fans that opportunity and a memory to tell their kids etc about. Don't knock it.

Whatever you think of the trophy. i still hate losing to no mark part timers like Gateshead. We put out a decent side and still got battered by the sound of it, when we should have battered them at BP if we wanted to progress.

We picked an inbetween team. Either go for it or don't. All this has done has added loads of travelling, extra games and strength sapping for Saturday.

Thank intercourse we don't have to endure Wembley. Unless it's in the Play Offs of course.

Wembley is a shite experience for small clubs. Shite music. Shite hyping up of the games by the announcer. Nowhere to get a decent beer.

That was our last chance to win coz now we will concentrate 100% on the league, overhaul Barnet and Bristol Rovers and take the title. Then we will take our rightful place in l2 and never return to this cess pit division.

And then I woke up and it was all a dream.

Right, we better get 3 points against Nuneaton now. I'm gonna be very annoyed if we put in a lethargic and tired performance against them.

So will I, and if we do Hurst will get hammered, and rightly so. No doubt the vast majority of those who were selected tonight will be picked again on Saturday, not including Paddy of course, who couldn't possibly hope to retain his place. Presumably we can now release the likes of Winfarrah, Watson, Bignot etc and save some money.

Hope they draw at Wrexham on Saturday, and have five postponements before the game is decided!

It still hurts to lose though.

Oh well, three points on Saturday is ultimately more important.

We already have a couple of matches to catch up, and our departure helps avoid a chronic fixture pile up.

Might we still have games postponed due to league opposition still in the trophy?

605 people there and we get half the gate receipts (after costs). Might just about pay for our petrol.

Did LJL actually play the extra-time as I can't recall hearing his name mentioned.

Bar Walker at right back and Paddy (who possibly would have got the nod over Brown given his recent problems) it was as strong a team as he could have put out. Palmer needed game time and it was a good opportunity for him to see whether Pitman and Palmer could play together.

I didn't think we were battered bar extra time....

There are players crying out for game time who got a tiny bit, or none - Hannah, Watson, Neilson, Winfarrah etc and others who are going to be asked to play 90 minutes on Saturday, followed by 120 minutes tonight, followed by another 90 minutes in 3 days time - Pearson, Nsiala, Disley, Arnold etc.
Then you have Paddy, who scored a great goal and has turned in a good performance, but who will be dropped. We've wasted scarce resources on some of these players who, let's face it, are never going to earn their wages if they can't get a run out in the FAT Round 2.

I don't care about the result, I just don't get the thinking behind the selections. I hope, for Hurst's sake, that there is plenty of energy in Town's performance on Saturday.

We will see whether those who advocate the 'get out of this sh*t trophy' policy are proven right come end April
As things stand in such a competitive year I'd say our chances of winning league are 20% and chances of making play offs are 60-40
So, whether we had progressed in Trophy or not I don't think it's a big issue because with or without distraction of Trophy it will be bloody tough
Lots of people need to find an excuse for failure and the FA Trophy is as good as any... but just as there is no evidence to suggest it helps a team there is no evidence to say it hampers them

Pretty much disagree with most of that. When we played them at BP, we sounded like pensioners on dope and tonight was a Paul "edging my bets" Hurst sort of line up. A kind of " i wanna win but i am not going for it" type of thing from Mr indecisive.

Go for it or don't. We had 2 bites of the cherry and did neither in either.

I'm not using this as an excuse to beat Hurst. If he had played the fringe players and gone out at the first attempt, then no worries, but we just never went for it completely in either game, so i can't see the point.

Totally agree. Said before when we got knocked out by Chasetown we didn't tear any trees up. Just seems like this competition IS A VERY POOR EXCUSE for not performing in the second half of a season.

Just back from a very cold night in Gateshead
JL got knocked out by the looks of it and was not allowed to take any further part in the game, I think that was the refs decision, unfortunately we had made all 3 subs and extra time had only just started.
Our second goal was only given by the female linesperson and I don’t even think our team could believe it had been given.
Gateshead’s third goal was partly down to Arnold being fouled and knocked to the floor where he decided to stay whilst complaining, The man he should have been tracking got the ball and crossed I for the goal.
Walker looked poor in the first half then took a knock early in the second half, looked like he wanted to come off but Paul changed others instead.
I can’t see why we did not either play kids and fringe players OR play the full squad that beat Barnet, A bit of both did not work tonight and for the first 20 mins we looked disjointed with no cohesion between defence and midfield.
Heard a rumour that JL may not be able to play for 10 days due to head injury, Hope not as we looked poor with palmer and Pitman upfront.

Had to listen to it and as you say it did sound disjointed , when our second goal went in although happy I was more worried about the effect of extra time . In all a game that no one wanted that could cost us in the long run . Decisions  made before during and now after will come and bite us hard on our backside I fear . Nuneaton  is now very important for us .

It would be nice to know what is going on behind closed doors to stop all these rumours too . Is he isn't  he , are they going or not , doesn't  help anyone . I know some things need to be kept secret for legal  reasons , but a statement  would help , not wishy washy sentences.
