What would football be like with no offside?

Midfield would cease to be of a great deal of use as both teams would leave 5 or 6 players up front all the time. You'd also have a player running around in front of the goalkeeper at all times acting as little more than a 'blocker'.

There have been quite a few experiments with the rule over the years including a 35 yard line but I haven't heard of one in England where it was abolished altogether.

Here's one.

If there was no offside it would certainly affect zone marking. If no-one could be left unmarked it ought to mean more space on the pitch as forwards could drag their markers all over the place and open up the play for the bloke with the ball. Beating one player could mean someone else is unmarked in front of goal.

It would be a different game altogether. Would it be better?

It would take most of the skill out of attacking and would make it seriously difficult to defend.

Why would he? If there was no offside, there'd be no offside trap, so he'd have to alter his game, with defenders sitting deeper.  Maybe he would poach a few goals (but he'd need to get on the pitch first )

This was one of the few ideas from America a few years back that we could've learned from.  Stops teams from trying to play offside on halfway, and because it effectively make the "middle third" bigger it gives better players space to play in, and makes it harder to just pack a congested midfield

My memory may be failing me but in some sort of pre-season "beer" cup, Watney's or something, wasn't the offside line drawn along the edge of the penalty area?

I remember that the Watney Cup featured the first penalty shoot out but dont recall the offside line as described. i may simply have forgotten it.

I recall that it was in the early USA soccer in 70;s
