Yeah it was, many times.
Our major shareholder said that the debts we had were to him and the taxman. We would still have to pay the entire tax bill and for him to enter administration would mean that the debt to him would be taken from asset stripping the club, which he wasn't prepared to do. Going into administration would have saved us nothing in real terms, merely lost the clubs assets and him a significant percentage of his investment, which he has stated many times is the much maligned "benign debt" (I think this is correct from my recollection of the statements he has made over the years. Correct me if there are other things I have misinterpreted or are plain wrong...)
I get all that but did the Club benifit in the long run ??

The way Leicester City went about it always annoys me. Think they owed the best part of 100m. Gary Lineker and co steps in and its all wiped.
Hey ho its xmas and they'll be getting relegated in May anyhow

| Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong Update: I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly |

There's a lot more than that. I produced a list of clubs in the top 5 Divisions at the time who have gone into administration over the years. Very, very surprising the number who have (some 2 or even 3 times). Charlton Athletic February 1984 Middlesbrough 21 May 1986 Tranmere Rovers 1987 Newport County 1989 Walsall 1990 Northampton Town 1992 Kettering Town 1992 Aldershot 1992 Maidstone 1992 Hartlepool United 1994 Barnet 1994 Exeter City 1994 Gillingham 1995 Doncaster Rovers 1997 Millwall 21 January 1997 Bournemouth 1997 Crystal Palace 1998 Chester City October 1998 Portsmouth 1998 Hull City 7 February 2001 Queens Park Rangers 2 April 2001 Halifax Town 9 April 2002 Bradford City 16 May 2002 Notts County June 2002 Barnsley 3 October 2002 Leicester City 21 October 2002 Port Vale 16 December 2002 York City 18 December 2002 Derby County 20 October 2003 Ipswich Town 10 February 2003 Wimbledon 5 June 2003 Darlington 23 December 2003 Bradford City 27 February 2004 Wrexham 3 December 2004 Cambridge United 29 April 2005 Rotherham United 13 May 2006 Crawley Town 5 June 2006 Boston United 25 April 2007 Leeds United 4 May 2007 Luton Town 22 November 2007 Bournemouth 8 February 2008 Rotherham United 18 March 2008 Halifax Town 26 March 2008 Darlington 25 February 2009 Southampton 2 April 2009 Stockport County 30 April 2009 Chester City 17 May 2009 Northwich Victoria 15 May 2009 Farsley Celtic 30 June 2009 Salisbury City 3 September 2009 Weymouth 28 October 2009 Crystal Palace 26 January 2010 Portsmouth 26 February 2010 Plymouth Argyle 4 March 2011 Rushden and Diamonds 7 July 2011 Darlington 3 January 2012 Portsmouth 17 February 2012 Port Vale 9 March 2012 Coventry City 21 March 2013 Aldershot Town 2 May 2013

On the other hand at least half a dozen have ceased to exist for at least a period in any form, and several others have had to start from scratch in the depths of non-league. Administration is Russian Roulette, there's no guarantee you'll come out of it better off.

Still doesn't detract from the matter that they have used the system to gain some sort of financial advantage . The likes of Farsley Weymouth Maidstone Salisbury aren't what you would call footballing hotbeds , living within your means and playing by the rules doesn't appear to be in the majority of these teams vocabulary .

I reckon there are 10 clubs on that list that either no longer exist or have spawned a phoenix club. Newport, Aldershot, Maidstone, Chester, Halifax, Wimbledon, Darlington, Farsley, Salisbury and R&D. At the end of the day though it's pretty pointless debating what would have happened had we gone into admin as we'll never know now. We could well have become another Southampton, Leicester or even Bournemouth but then again we could also just as easily have become another Chester, Maidstone or Rushden & Diamonds.

A well balanced view on the whole administration scenario , Les. It's the great unknown and it's easier to quote teams that have done ok out of it and ignore those that have suffered.
