4-3-2-1 ?

I would say so, but Hurst played those three together in a couple of ways and that is the most dangerous we have been all season when those three have played together.

I've had a play around with different formations and personally I can't fit them all in

That's what I meant by tricky...
If you're not a Mackreth fan, you could put Arnold on the right wing.
But like Neilson, whether that suits him or not...

Not suggesting we go with this at all, but have been thinking of a more attacking alternative.

3 at the back may solve bradzmilne's problem of "fitting them all in".
This means if we want "big defenders" we've still got them.

One example...

......................McKeown
.........Toto........Pearson.....Magnay
.......................Parslow
.Mackreth.....XXX......XXX........Arnold
................Pittman...John-Lewis

Obviously you also can tweak this formation "up top" from 3-1-4-2 to a 3-1-4-1-1 with Neilson in behind LJL if you prefer.

We are playing at home so 4-5-1 should not even be considered ,

What about this,                                                        Macca

                                            Magnay               Toto                      Pearson       Thomas

                                                                                 Parslow

                                                        Mackreth                Clay            Arnold

                                                                                      Neilson

                                                                                   John Lewis

Interesting Pete !

Maybe it boils down to whether you think Mackreth and Arnold could cause (or could be caused) problems running from a more central midfield position ?

Whether we may need more width or not I don't know.
But I certainly thought myself it was worth at least considering Neilson (i.e. similar to YOUR Mackreth & Arnold) in a similar more central / attacking midfield role too.

And you've gone with all 3 attacking players with the knowledge at least there's a defensive midfielder like Parslow there as some sort of cover.

I see where you're coming from...

Lots of good formations and suggestions from everyone on this thread.
All we need to do now is to agree which is best, tell Hurst and we've cracked it !

This for me. But definitely as a 433 more than a 451. With a very high press.

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"
