From a Barnsley fan who mentioned that Oates will bang goals in for us, he said pre season he played a few times and thought he was the better of the four strikers barnsley have and much better than Leroy Lita. Yesterday proved he has an eye for goal and just hope he gets given a full game paired with Hannah or Lenny.

Well he's certainly started in a positive fashion. Sounded like he was was struggling for match fitness and could hardly move at the end so he may not get a full game for a little while yet. Could well be a gem of a signing though.

Just seen his goal. Perfect first touch, and a perfect, clean, fierce strike in to the corner. A moment of real quality.

By the sound of things he could be a useful addition,
We might need to extend the loan to get him fully fit for Barnsley , next year,
Super sub for a few games then when fit, he will start.

Took his goal really well, just watched the highlights and it was our one bit of quality. Great pass from Brown, Oates got the ball out from under his feet and a very good strike.
Only problem is that he is clearly not match fit. If he can't last half an hour, he won't last a full game even after a month so he will probably have to be used as a sub and that leaves us still short of a striker doesn't it?

According to Paul, the players have got Monday off - so Rhys will presumably start training with Town on Tuesday.
From the fans' comment, it's hard to see how he will be fit enough to start the match on Saturday.
If Nsiala hasn't got 5 yellows and LJL not ready, I can see the same starting 11 - as at Kidderminster (not that that is a bad thing but an attacking attitude would need to be instilled in the players to see off Chester). Paul is going to see Chester v Wrexham, so hopefully Chester's defensive weaknesses can be identified and exploited next Saturday.

Trouble is, that we get him fit and if he is scoring regular, he will get recalled, or sold on by his club, leaving us back where we started, We need our own players , instead of false hope again

I think the trick here is to use Rhys as a 'supersub' for a month and if he is further successful - look to extend the 1 month loan.

Barnsley had 3 strikers on the bench on Saturday, including Sam Winnall. Andy Coles son is on loan at Barnsley from Man City, he's scored 3 goals in 7 games so far and 4 of those as a sub around 60 minutes, his loan finishes in January. Pray their strikers keep knocking the goals in lol.

Agreed, better to bring him on when the game has slowed up and opponents are getting tired....say on 55-60 mins? Or..... should you start with him and try to get an hour?

According to fans' reports he came on after 63 mins and was shattered after 85 mins - so it could be a week or two before you could give him an hour from the kick off.
Supersub for now

Surely a weeks training, another half hour this coming Saturday and (if he proves good enough) a start a week on Tuesday. He is 18-19 FFS should not take him long to get up to speed

He's a professional footballer and it is not as though he has been coming back from injury. His fitness shouldn't be a problem - really should be able to manage at least an hour from the off.

fitness shouldn't be an issue with him being young, so that should come quick. Barnsley have 4 strikers who are above oates in the pecking order so it would be good to get this lad to full fitness then propose for a season loan!

I think he will end up staying for the season, Barnsley hopefully won't need him. Its a good learning curve for him he played at Con North level, so he's going up a league.
On Saturday i would go with Rossy Hannah and Rhys Oates up front, hopefully Nathan Arnold will be back soon.

saw the highlights and i must admit, you can tell the first thing he wanted to do is shoot as soon as he got the ball, i think we might have a good youngster on our hands here, lets just hope PH gives him plenty of time to see what he can do. Personally i would start him with Hannah and bench Lenny, then bring Lenny on later.

I think the opposite. Hannah really doesn't contribute much to the team at all and loses the ball far too often. It's not like he's been scoring this season either - he's not doing enough to retain his place if you ask me. At least LJL provides a presence up front and can hold it up and lay it off - IF we play it into his feet rather than hoofing it up onto his head.

It would be madness to drop LJL in favour of Hannah, who has offered pretty much nothing so far this season. Just bonkers.
Don't mind seeing two big blokes playing up front together (Torquay have been doing OK with this), so there wouldn't be any issues with LJL/Oates playing together.
That said, if LJL is fit for the weekend, I'd guess he will start alongside Hannah with Oates ready to come on in the second half. I don't think Hurst will be too keen to chuck the lad on at the start unless he really impresses in training.

It was the power with which he hit the shot that really made that goal. It was past the keeper before he could dive. If he hit it any softer then I reckon the keeper would probably have saved it. I'd love to know how fast that ball was traveling when it left his boot.

Agree totally! All Hannah offers is a good penalty. He's offside way too often, has little strength and doesn't score regularly in open play! We looked really threatening with Pittman and LJL up front so I don't see why LJL and Oates wouldn't work!

Notice Joe Ironside is banging in the goals. Ironside and Clay were apparently crap, Clay is the signing of the season. Make sure we sign our top players up early like Neilson, Brown, Clay and Magnay.

Interesting observation STM.
In pre - season, Ironside was the player that impressed me and Clay was just not fit (in my view).
I think that Grimsby 'back room staff' have done a great job with Clay 'so far' and there is no reason why they can not pick out similar young players (not sure why Ironside wasn't signed) and bring them on to 1st team fruition..

speed = distance/time Could you work it out from the footage? Distance is easy, not sure how accurately you could measure time. To convert from yard/sec to mph you need to multiply by 2.045.

it was only a suggestion to not rush Lenny back, after all we dont have a reserves for him to test his fitness, but yeah i agree that Lenny will obviously replace Hannah, i was just being cautious.

I think LJL was expected to be back for yesterday and Pittman could be up to a couple of months with a hammy (especially an already bad one).

Apparently, hamstring strains come in 3 types. Recovery times are as follows:
Grade 1 - 1 to 3 weeks
Grade 2 - 4 to 8 weeks
Grade 3 - 3 to 6 months. These may also require surgery.
I think they initially thought it was a Grade 3 tear but (from what has been said) now hope it is Grade 2. In which case, probably a couple of months out.
LJL's was just a knock, wasn't it, not a joint/muscular injury? Should hopefully be back for next weekend, I'd have thought.

"Good luck to Rhys Oates.
Bad luck to Grimsby Town.
I hope the lad scores a bucketful of goals, but that Grimsby lose every single game he plays in. And the ones he doesn't play in, too.
I won't forget being chased around Cleethorpes when I was 15 years old. VVankers. First-ever away game, too."

We got chased out of Huddersfield back in the 80's, as I'm sure others on here did, and at various other grounds. Yet I acknowledge that apart from the handful of idiots involved, the other huge majority of the 7,000 crowd that day went straight home. So I bear no long lasting grudge against the club itself, I don't wish for the current team to lose heavily, it's just a handy excuse for 'hating' a bunch of people from a different region. We're all as bad in this respect imho.

They certainly have. I remember being 13 or 14 and we beat Barnsley 1-0. Coming out the ground a fat Barnsley fan in his 40s walking past the other way grabbed me by the throat and dumped me on the floor. Terrifying moment for a kid. I hope that guy is dead but I'm not dumb enough to believe he was representative of all their fans.

It was the power with which he hit the shot that really made that goal. It was past the keeper before he could dive. If he hit it any softer then I reckon the keeper would probably have saved it. I'd love to know how fast that ball was traveling when it left his boot.
I have measured it with a stopwatch five times, and my average time for five measurements was 0.45 sec from when kicked to entering the goal. If you count it as being almost on the penalty area line then it travelled 18 yards in 0.45 seconds. That equates to 81.82 mph. UTM

You can not just use a stopwatch Tom, To get an accurate speed you have to take into consideration all of the following, Altitude of the ground Wind Speed + or - Curvature of the earth Was the film you was looking in HD or not, It's not as easy as you think mate.

Near enough is not good enough Tom, It's got to be spot on.

Watched MoTD 2 last night, and they were showing some "bullet" shots, and a couple by Henry and Shearer were high 70's mph, so you are definitely in the right ball park Tommy in my view

He should grow up. I was spat at in the face by a Barnsley fan after we beat them at Oakwell some time in the early 90s. You can imagine I wasn't very happy at the time but I don't hold a grudge against all Yorkies because of it (just against that knuckle-dragging whippet-chasing tossbag). I even married one (a Yorkshire girl, not a knuckle-dragging whippet chaser!)

Hurst says Oates has been doing well in training. Looking forward to seeing him play (if he starts or gets on)
