If you could re-live one game what would it be?

Mine would be the win at Liverpool and to see that wonder goal what Jevons scored, The atmosphere was electric and will live with me forever.

I would imagine a few on here would go for the Wembley games, I was at work for Bournemouth and on honeymoon for the Northampton game so missed out unfortunately.  

I have seen many memorable games at BP but the Liverpool away game sticks out for me.

Another very very memorable game was the win at Goodison.

Without hesitation I'd go for Bournemouth at Wembley. Just the whole experience of getting the train and it being packed with Town fans then Kings Cross and the Tube being the same. I'd never been to Wembley before and the Twin Towers coming into view and knowing Town would be running out there, then the view of Wembley Way from the Tube was actually quite moving. Then the game and Town being really disappointing and going behind before figthing back second half and the golden goal in extra time. Absolutely magic day from start to finish.

Honourable mentions for Middlesbrough away in the FA Cup, Burnley away to get to Wembley and the Liverpool game.

I didn't really see much that day or appreciate what was going on but It'd be great to be back in The Pontoon now with the other 22,000 odd fans in the ground.

Notts Forest Away in 2001 ( i think) i cant even remember if we won or not but i just had a great day! so that one

The 6.5 Burnley game was a cracker!  Not often you witness 11 goals in one game.

The playoff semi final against Fulham at BP was a cracker too, Great atmosphere and a full house!

2 games stand out for me but there have many many fantastic games over the years.

Home to West Ham in 1965 in the League Cup quarter final was a brilliant match which we should have won but ended drawing 2-2. Of course West Ham boasted several England players in their side and were top notch at the time. The atmosphere and noise when we went ahead twice was something else.

The Fulham play off game at home was an electric atmosphere and I think that was the most nervous I have been at any Town game so that stands out too.

Think I'm going to have to agree with you on this Les, it's the first game I recall being at although my uncle tells me he had taken me to earlier games.  Stood on the wooden fences behind then pontoon goal, think the atmosphere of this day got me well and truly addicted to Town.

Was a close call between this, v Northampton at Wembley in 98, v Everton in 78/79,  v Sheff Utd 79/80 when Kev Drinkell scored a hat trick and we got the old 3rd division championship and probably when we beat Darlington at home 7-2 (78/79 ?), Mike Lester scored 4 I think ! Bloody great times.

This would be mine. I was only a young kid and I was lifted over the Barratt stand fence because of the crush to watch the game from the sidelines.  Only vague memories, but would be great to re-live the atmosphere.

Lots of other great matches and occasions come to mind, but if I could choose only one this would be it.

Was at most of the games already mentioned 1st big memory was Exeter 72 , had been going for 3/4 year before but we was crap till then , the Newcastle game at st James is a definite highlight tho, but if I could revisit one game it would be the Liverpool win ( Jevon's goal) cos I missed it cos of a family wedding abroad

Town v West Brom, circa 1995. Buckley's second return to B.P. after he'd left the first time. He came back, they beat us and he went fairly berserk on the touchline. A season later, they're back; it happens to be Bonetti's 'last' game (it wasn't; thanks to our buckets); we win 1-0 with a Bonetti goal, in front of the Pontoon, which he proceeds to celebrate for fully five minutes, long after the game had resumed, as all three sides of BP rejoice (go berserk themselves).

Everton away was my fave.

Just asked my Grandad who's being following Town longer than he cares to remembers and said Everton away when Wilkinson scored the winner.

For me, I'd say Bournemouth, partly cos I was only 8 and don't remember all that much of it.

I would've said Liverpool away but I remember a hell of alot more from that game.

Obviously the big games, but sometimes it's the lesser games that create the memories too.

Chelsea 2 Grimsby 3. Saturday 17th December 1983. This game for me, I travelled with the Town fans on the train to Kings Cross. I was a Chelsea follower in them days and was sat behind the dugouts with my younger brother and a mate. at half time I was well happy being 2 - 0 up through John Bumstead and Kerry Dixon, Town came out and scored through a player I cant recall but the highlight of the game was a magnificent strike by Tony Ford, it was one of the best goals I have seen at Stanford Bridge. I think Waters scored the winner for Town which left me gutted.This day was marred by the Harrods Bomb which killed many and was a sad day for the nation but the game was one to remember for the 13,000 that attended for Fords goal alone.
Chelsea came to Blundell Park for the last game of the season and won 0 - 1 (Dixon) and lifted the Div 2 title. How things have changed for me as now if I could return for that game I would be stood with the Town fans.

I was there that day too Steve, there's very little press coverage etc from that game because of the IRA bombing of Harrod an hour and a half before kick off when most press were called away to cover that.

I thought Waters got the first, Paul Emson the 2nd and Fordy got the winner. Long time ago though so I might be getting muddled up.

Kerry Dixon scored the first after 27 minute from the penalty spot following a foul by Kev Moore (RIP)

John Bumstead put Chelsea 2-0 up after 57 minutes.

On 66 minutes Joe Waters beat Eddie Niedzwiecki with a 30 yard chipped shot

Eight minutes later Paul Emson jinked round the home defence and the Chelsea keeper could only get a finger-tip to the ball as it entered the net and then 3 minutes after that Emson sent an inch-perfect cross for Tony Ford to stun the occupants of The Shed into unaccustomed silence.

In between the last 2 goals, referee D.J.Axcell had to be stretchered off the field to be replaced by his linesman D.H.Nevin.

i have a tough call on this one as 3 stand out for me. The first being the unforgettable 4-3 defeat to arsenal at blundell park in the fa cup, great game great atmosphere against a great team. The second bournemouth at wembley, as others have mentioned the fact that we saw our little club playing at wembely for the first time ever was just huge and a great day out was had, the third was wembely 98 again against northampton, not particularly a great game but the feeling of emotion i had inside at the final whistle, dont mind admitting i was rather tearfull as that season i hadnt missed many games home or away and the feeling of knowing we had finally done it was something i have yet to repeat.

but as i only have 1 choice, bournemouth at wembley 98, only because it is something i always dreamed of but never in my wildest dreams thought would ever happen, gtfc at wembley.

I`m with Sigone on this one, Town 2 Everton 1, League cup 4th round. Over 22,000 in Blundell Park. It was a night match and the atmosphere was electric. I was in the old Barrett`s stand. A programme for this game is actually for sale on ebay at the moment. A close second was seeing Town beat Bournemouth at Wembley.

Everton away still sends shivers down my spine when I think about it as a young kid twagging it to go. I'd want to see the Sheffield Utd game as I can only just remember it and I want to see the Waters goal again.

Wembley 1 too as it still brings a tear to the eye.

home game - either Newcastle at home 91/92 (only saw the second half coz the steward let me in free at half time) or spurs in the cup same season


away - either shef united 94/95 and 95/96 or stoke 93/94 (i only say stoke because going to stoke on the train and walking to the victora ground not long after all the kicking off happened at bp was a experience in its self for a 15 year old kid)

The home leg of play off semi final against Fulham or Liverpool in 2001.  The atmosphere for both was brilliant.

More recently when be beat Lincoln 4-1 on Boxing Day the other year.

Grimsby 1 WBA 0 Ivano scoring and being mobbed, beating Buckley's Judas team!

Great thread, love reading other peoples thoughts although there are many games I didn't go to and am now feeling like I missed out on a lot!

For me there are 3 contenders:

I would have to consider an odd one, Bury away 2-0.  First win under Mike Newell after what felt like forever.  We had a man sent off and the game wasn't great but the atmosphere among Town fans that day was one of the best I have ever heard, amazing support and commitment meant there was not a second's silence in the entire second half.

Secondly as others have mentioned the Bournemouth Auto Windscreen win, remember seeing Wembley way and being so excited, was right behind the goal as Burnett scored and while Golden Goal was a bad idea, if there is a better way to win I don't know it.

However my the ONE game I would have to re-live is the playoff final against Northampton.  The previous Wembley visit was great but this just felt so much more important, there were so many more Northampton fans and despite a penalty and hitting the bar we were only 1 goal up and under the cosh for what felt like the longest 6 minutes of my life.  Then after a couple of scary moments the final whistle went and we had done the 'double'.  The release of that moment and the euphoria of promotion for me cannot be beaten.

I was also at this game in my early Army days. Fantastic day but for me it has to be the Jim Dobbin goal at Newcastle winning 1-0. "Put it in the corner say Alan" Jim did. The top corner!

At many of the games mentioned and the 71/72 Exeter game always a highlight but think the first game of that season when we beat the Scunts 4-1 with Tees hattrick was the start of a new era having watched town for the previous three years when we were mainly dire with low crowds. The next big one which rarely gets mentioned, maybe cos not a classis was 1-1 draw with Norwich in League cup in 1971 when we also has 22000 in attendance. I was fifteen and never experienced anything like that in my time watching town.

I also really enjoyed some home boxing day fixtures with good crowds v Newcastle 1978 I think, then Barnsley when big Norman got sent off for nutting Bob Cumming and v Sheff wed when Jack Charlton in charge ans we won 1-0.

Add Everton, spurs twice Fulham in play offs and Everton away plus Wembley in 1998 and choosing becomes impossible

This,  a modern Rorke`s Drift, jn all the matches I`ve seen since I`ve never seen us pinned in our own half for 88 minutes, break away corner GQAL!, I don`t think Everton had lost at home that season till then

I was going to say the Everton home game or the Exeter home game or the West Ham League Cup classic but I was reminded of another great game in the GT Bygones this week, January 1959, FA Cup 3rd Round - Town 2 Man City 2. I remember BP being covered in snow and Mike Cullen scoring with a header, very unusual for him. We were 2-0 up at half time but had to hang on for a draw. Then we went and won the replay at Maine Road 2-1 with Ron Cockerill scoring both I think.

Some great matches mentioned and i was at a good number of them but one that always sticks in my mind was Easter 1982 (i think) against Barnsley at BP.

2-0 down at half time and we won 3-2 kicking toward a packed pontoon in the second half. Joe Waters magnificent and pandemonium in the Ponny.

I'd quite like to relive the 7-0 against Stockport from a couple of years ago - the problems of being a recent town fan!

There are loads of games over the years,

It would be nice to go and watch Town play in the Football League EVERY WEEK !!!!!!!!!!

Also one to remember: West ham Utd away in Cup, on freezing night in 95/96.  1 1 draw, phenomenal Town turnout - midweek too.  And topical banner and chant from us that amused the Hammers fans : "Free Arthur Fowler".  Beat them in the replay at BP, then out in next round vs Chelsea, Ruud Gullit version.

Of the above remember the game Ginnywings mmentions v Barnsley and in particular Batchy making nonpolite gestures re Barnsley when facing the Ponny, basically implying they were w.......s. Re the game at Coventry we went on bus from Rasen and had to go through Newark, before bypass was built, and we had three pints in Bridge Inn whilst bus moved about 50 yards. Think we had something like 13000 town fans at that game

My favourite Town memory will always be of that first Wembley visit - just because I never thought I would see Grimsby there (I emigrated weeks after the Northampton game).

However, I would love to feel again the wonder that I felt when we went to Liverpool in 1980 for the FA Cup. I had never experienced such a crowd or noise or intimidation like that before and it blew my 11 year old mind. I know we lost 5-0, but hey, that whole Anfield experience was amazing.

A special mention has to go out to the League Cup run of 1979. My memory is fading a bit, but didn't we beat Notts County in a terrific game first before those two epic Blundell Park nights against Everton (favourite home game) and Wolves (oh the anti climax of the third Wolves game at Derby (I still have a programme for that somewhere))?

And what about the first half of the Harry The Haddock game at Wimbledon?

The away game was ment to be on the Saturday but got called off on the day because of snow, we got just past gimpland on the a46 when it got called off, wasn't aloud to go to the reply because of school in the morning, but saw us win at bp. Good times

Remember this well: was living in Essex at the time , the hammers fans on the district line home were anything but amused!

Yeah, remember it too. We were on one of the numerous supporters coaches but because the A46 was blocked at Caistor because of the snow we had to go A180, M180, A15. We were halfway between the M180 and Caenby Corner when we heard that the game had been called off.

The West Ham game - I got an early morning train from Bolton and found out the game was off when I got to the ground!! Made it back for the draw got into work the next day and was made redundant!!

Cheltenham in the playoffs but with a different outcome had we won that match how different our recent history would read but if I can't tweak the result  then it would be Norwich at home in 72 will never forget that night in the pontoon with a crowd of almost 23000

Everton fans rather upset with town fans after the game, chasing us across stanley park and down Anfield Rd, cant think why  .  The other thing i remember was Batch being in the pier before any town fans got home, due to him getting a lift with mike hallett and doing over a 100mph home

We had 20,000 plus at Anfield. Had the Anfield Road end, half the Kemlyn Road stand, plus a good few in the Kop - something that had never happened at Anfield previously. When you think how strictly away fans are controlled nowadays, and have been for some time, it wouldn't surprise me if the Town following that day might be the biggest ever seen at Anfield? Everton were playing Aldershot that day, and did try and take it out on Town fans across Stanley Park, ably abetted by the local plod who turned a blind eye.

Consider this....their capacity then was about the 55,000 mark, and they only reached that mark four times that season, against Everton, Leeds, Man Utd and Spurs. There would have been a huge home support for those games, so away fans would have been limited. Town's attendance was 49,000, Liverpool's fifth highest attendance of the season! We didn't beat Wolves that season, though only the crossbar kept them in the game at BP. Huge away followings at Molineux and the Baseball Ground (for the 2nd replay) made it a memorable season alongside our promotion to the old 2nd Division as well.

Coventry away in 1972-3 was another huge "away day" with 23,000 making the trip to Highfield Road. If I remember rightly, didn't the Telegraph have the headline "Will the last person out of Grimsby turn off the lights"??? All the spare coach capacity in Lincolnshire had been booked, and over 120 coaches, 2 special trains and thousands of cars made the journey, giving Coventry their biggest home attendance for 4 years!

Such a shame that today's fans will never experience those kind of days again. Anyone who was there will simply never forget them.

Even in those days I'm surprised it happened but then again Sunday football was almost unheard of then. (Even if the first Sunday game was in 1974, it wasn't the given thing back then)

Liverpool's meat and potato pies were absolutely minging, probably the worst "food" I've ever endured at a football match!

Remember turning up at Anfield fairly early, about 1.30pm, and they only had two gates on the Anfield Raod end open. I asked Plod, who was stoood nearby (the only one) if he was aware of how many fans were making their way over the Pennines, given they only had the two gates open? He said their "intelligence indicated that they were expecting between 1,500 and 2,000" When i informed me that there were 20,000 odd coming he told me to "f*ck off smart@rse!"

We were also picked on by Everton fans ( I USE THE TERM LOOSELY ) after the game.
We got to the game on one of them massive football special trains. Some of the trains windows were smashed coming out of Liverpool.

A perfect summary of those days and why many of us are still addicted to supporting town, I also remember the replay at Norwich and I a night game away at Doncaster in 1971/72 season when we lost 2-1 with massive twon following a hailstorm of bricks during the game. I also received a good kicking in subway after away game at Wolves so not everything was rosy in those days but we all kept going to the matches.

Just hope our younger fans get to experience something similar in the future as always made the hair on the back of your neck stick out when you were part of such massive followings.

Speaking of the Wolves game reminded me that I travelled in car driven by the famous local Grimsby fisherman Rod Hutchinson who was business partner at the time with my best mate. We entered Molineux to be searched & three of us entrered the stand but no Rod so we stood about assuming he had gone to the loo.

After 10 minutes no sign of him so we went back out to look for him & he was in a bit of a state leant against the wall and we enquired as to what had happened. He explained that on getting searched the Police found half bottle of whisky which they were to confiscate but he insisted on drinking the contents first and without our assistance he duly did and was the worse for wear as a result, and he was supposed to drive us home. Other than the subway attack mentioned earlier good night otherwise!!

Not seen him for a while anybody now how Rod is? think is brother got sine die ban from football but maybe I am wrong as long time ago now

I got my head kicked in before the game...same place, same outcome but the law did nothing about what went on there  

When I ran round the corner from the subway to get in I came across a copper who stopped and frisked me and asked me what the rush was

Told him I'd just been attacked and he more or less shrugged it off and said just get in to the ground

I remember most of that replay seeing about four images...must have been concussed but as you said we kept going. If only we could have gone further than a second replay the beating in the car park would have been sweet revenge but sadly things didn't go our way at Derby

I can remember the Old Bill escorted a load of us Town fans to the ground at Derby with Wolves fans lobbing stuff at us from the other side of the road.

When I first got into the Baseball Ground that night there was quite a lot of Derby lads who were singing "Derby & Grimsby" trying to join up against Wolves fans. Worked for about 10-15 minutes until Grimsby's full compliment were there, gave the Derby fans short shrift (& a bit more) & they moved on. Terrible place to go though in all them side streets.

That underpass in Molineux is notorious for attacks on away fans, and always has been. A bit like Harrington Street and the Promenade in Meggies for away fans?

Another such good away day (or more specifically, away night) was at Filbert Street, Leicester, for the FAC 2nd replay against Southampton. Another great away following, outnumbering our more illustrious 1st Division opponents easily. I remember a rather feeble attempt when their 4th goal went in at a pitch invasion, in a vain attempt to get the game abandoned.

We didn't have a very good record in 2nd replays did we. Not sure if there were any others but the ones I remember were losing 4-1 to Southampton at Leicester, losing 2-0 to Wolves at Derby and losing 6-0 at Stoke after they won the toss to hold the 2nd replay at home.
