Okay lads and lasses, think back to to previous years, or this season if you like   which signings have we made that didn't impress you, annoyed you or even angered you, and by that I don't mind judging on how they played for us, just going by your reaction when we first signed them.

I'll start the ball rolling with a few....

*Clint Marcelle (absolutley pointless signing, we had adequate strikers, he looked old and slow in his trial but we signed him)

*Richard Hope (was going down hill, and I remember the rumour circulating around here for a couple of weeks before he signed, it seemed the majority of us wern't impressed with him when it was a rumour let alone when we signed him)

*Anthony Williams (Relegated in 03/04, we had lost Davison, not considered Fettis and were looking at a straight return to League One, and we went and signed Hartlepool's sub keeper, admist reports he was crap anyway..the rest is history)

*Chris Williams & Paul Robinson (two utter pointless loan signings in 04/05, and it was the other Paul Robinson, not the ginger ex Newcastle striker)

*Simon Grand (not the answer to our defensive worries, panic signing)

*Lee Thorpe (The thought of being a Championship relegated club struggling in League One, and panic loaning a League Two striker, and Lincoln cast off didn't give me any confidence for our survival)

*Willie Falconer (did we need him? did we use him? past it has been, utterly pointless at the time of signing)

*Matthew Bloomer (Local lad, really nice bloke, didn't make the grade first team round, wasn't exactly a world beater at Hull or Lincoln, so to sign a player back who didn't cut the mustard first time around didn't impress me)

*Terry Barwick (A friend of mine who is a Scunny season ticket holder told me this guy wasn't good enough to lace Beagrie's boots, he had played 2 games in 04/05 for Scunny and wasn't injured, and to make him our first signing of 05/06 wasn't inspiring)

*Terry Fleming (Old journeyman League Two midfielder, nothing more than a gap filler in the squad)

*Neil Webb (Ex United, Ex Forest, Ex England, but had been reported he had lost his legs long before we gave him a contract)

Elding, the definition of lower league journey man striker on his way down. Went completely against the usual S&H signings.

He did a lot better than I thought he would last season.

Didn't think he was a bad signing for the Conference, had a half decent goal scoring rate.

I wasn't as mortified as most when we signed Beagrie, probably due to his main role being as part of the coaching staff, I thought at 40 years old, he could act as cover, and an experienced head for the squad on the training field. I overlooked he came from Scunny, obviously the rest is history

Widely hailed as the missing part of the jigsaw when he signed. I thought he would do well.

Neil woods. Not as a player though. Talk about not impressing during your trial!

I was there, the day Bradley Wood scored a 35 yarder!

From the black and white striped shirts
To the fish in the sea
You'll hear us singing
Coz we are Grimsby.

You won't hear us crying
But you'll hear us shout
Coz we are the Grimsby
And this is our chant.......... Grimsby! Grimsby! Grimsby!

Spot on Les. I may have been underwhelmed by alot of signings down the years but these are the only two i can think of that i have vehemently opposed.

Scott McGarvey. The only play I can remember with just about every touch of the ball fell to the ground when he lost it and every shot he took went over the pontoon/osmond roof. He nearly gave my dad a bloody heart attack to.

Chris Grocock, just a first class member

Rhys Wilmot, could not catch a cold let alone a ball

I could wright a book of dreadful signings

Jude stirling long throw thats about it, everytime when defending he was so clueless the player could walk and still get past him

Anthony Williams when i saw him in the lincs senior cup against scunny when he dived the wrong way for every peno cos it went into penos always dived to the right and every peno went the opposite way, well he couldn't dive at all could he

Aruand mendy meant to be a box to box player, didn't see him in any box

Josh mageniss and to think hes currently doing better than us is a joke

Malvin kamara, awful simplicity awful

Tomi ameobi was signed with malvin kamara by watkiss and was worse than kamara

There are many more

Scott McGarvey was a bit of a disappointment.

Started at Man Utd I think and hit the bar on his debut for us at Leeds if I remember correctly with a long range free kick but he never really settled and we got relegated that year when we right up there when he came!

Did he sign at the same time as the really awful Mick Halsall?

Its about your reaction when we signed them, not the way they played. So what players did you eek at at first glance. Like i said a few did with Mildenhall but he turned out ok.

Haha, wasn't aiming at that. Just signings that didn't impress at first you when we signed them, regardless of how they played.

Towards the end of Newell's reign, his loan signings really showed signs of desperation.

Colbeck (on reviews) but I will reserve judgement on that one. So far, so good though.

I think a lot of people are misunderstanding the thread. I read it as players who you were aware of at the time and then thought, why the intercourse are we signing him. I doubt anyone had heard of Simon Heslop or Tommy Forecast before we signed them. To that end, to add to my previous nominations of Beagrie and Curran I will add the name Justin Whittle. An aging centre half from the mudrats, Im so glad he rammed my initial thoughts down my throat.

Yep, well done for steering the thread back on track! Forecast came here with quite a reputation having being in the first team squads for Spurs and Southampton. Nobody could have predicted quite how bad he would be.

Oh and I can't think many people were over the moon when we signed Iffy fookin Onuora.

Mark Flatts. from the might Arsenal, and Enzo Gambaro from AC Milan (just never got fit). Those two for me raised a lot of initial excitement but then failed to live up to my expectations.

Mark Flatts. from the might Arsenal, and Enzo Gambaro from AC Milan (just never got fit). Those two for me raised a lot of initial excitement but then failed to live up to my expectations.

That's the other way round though. We're talking about players, that when we signed them you thought, "why are we signing him, he'll be bloody rubbish" or a player you used to dislike when he played for a different club.

Those two were signings that DID impress you at the time and turned out to be rubbish.

I remember being annoyed when we signed Rob Jones. 6''7? What good is he gonna be?

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

Mike Edwards...released by Hull, flopped at Colchester, was a symbol of our decline. Turned out okay though

Paul Futcher - remember being distinctly underwhelmed that we'd signed someone that couldn't even get a game at Halifax....

Our water-proof defensive partnership of Paul Raven and Richard Hope.

As soon as these guys put pen to paper I almost binned my season ticket immediately

I would say about 95% of our signings the past 6 years.

I may be mis-understanding your meaning but wasnt there about 8/9 years between the signing of these two?

Remember thinking Alan Connell's goalscoring record was extremely underwhelming the day he signed. Had never rated him.

Harry Willis no idea what his best strength  was

Have followed Town for all my life during the ups and downs.

My son plays for school of excellence which is so well run without any funding and can see some future stars in the lower age teams.
