Would we be up for sprucing up the Pontoon gate before it's renamed for Matty and Richard?

I've just had this email from Dale at the club:

Morning David, Would you be able to get a few of the boys to volunteer
to maybe spruce the gate up a bit? Maybe a lick of paint? Would make it
more of a fitting tribute to Richard and Matty.
Cheers

Are we up for that?

On a personal level, I live an hour from Grimsby, and would realistically only be able to do this on a Saturday, but realise others might be able to pick this up and it on a different day? I'm not much of a handyman either, but I've been waiting for an opportunity to make a mess of that Cod Almighty Mike Newell T-Shirt!

Have we got an artist out there who could paint a mural on it.

Or, and sign writing company who would do a 'Photo Job' on it for free for a bit of free advertising.

Any other ideas....

I will donate a small amount towards it if someone lets me know how to do so.

P.S. live too far away to do painting, sorry.

may not be the most original of ideas, but, ive seen things done before where people buy a brick and have their names emblazened within it.
could something similar not be done?

Anyone know the name of the kid who did the artwork outside the matrix club? I can't for the life of me remember his name but he's bloody brilliant. Something like that, maybe a scene of supporters would look really good.

Think the lad who did it a few years ago was called Cal. Although it's bad enough his 'art' is / was outside there, let alone on the gates. Get someone to paint a nice trawler or something on the gate (not Wrabz, sorry, but your paintings are awful)

I didn't realise they were paintings! Thought it was just some fancy photoshop app or something. Pretty good if you've done them freehand to be fair!

Alot of it is photoshop, I start freehand and finish it up on the computer, I can do entirely freehand (I wouldnt be an artist otherwise) The one I did commissioned by Bradley Wood's dad was entirely freehand

That would be a good idea IMO, but if no-one is interested theres no point wasting your time
I think wrawbs is our best option, he clearly is a very good artist and even better a fellow mariner

Spoken to Dale Ladson, I'm meeting with him tomorrow at 3 pm. I will go to him with a few ideas approved by the majority on here and we start on Monday.  We would probably have to supply our own paint though.

I don't want to get in to some 80sglory style miserablism, but if this isn't done properly it will look terrible. Just imagine having to walk past gross misrepresentations of Alan Buckley or John McDermott every game. It'd scare people off!

why make it complicated? Wack a lick of paint on it then get the lads names put on it, simple.
Oh and I'm in Devon and I'm colourblind and useless and drawing/painting so thats me out   ... I've sent my money off towards it though!

On the painting side of things could it not be kept simple at the moment with the lads names on, then after some thought and ideas drawn up go for a decent painting which could take time and money? Please do not just rush into this give it some thought.

On the painting side of things could it not be kept simple at the moment with the lads names on, then after some thought and ideas drawn up go for a decent painting which could take time and money? Please do not just rush into this give it some thought.
UTMM

Seconded.

It would be nice to do something with all the gates at BP, given time and money to plan it. Best to stick to a simple but fitting tribute for now, I think.

Not sure how difficult it would be to do but how about a painting of the old Barrett Stand gate that used to stand where the Ponny gate stands now? If not possible, a 'nod' to the old Barrett Stand would be good. I know a few fallen Mariners that have walked through both.

Discussed this with Wrawbs tonight at the Trust Board meeting. My only fear is that it would be like a magnet to graffitti artists everywhere-especially those of away teams...

maybe getting ahead of myself here but maybe just keep it to a legends theme if players are going to be painted on the gate. Not saying that I dislike Hearn, far far from it, or any of the current squad (maybe with the exception of Duffy) but I think if they are to be honoured, they should be true, proven GTFC servants before they get on "the gate".

But anyway, I struggle to paint a skirting rail. Just my thoughts. I'd be happy with just seeing the gate spruced up with a lick of paint for the time being.

Just to add my ten pennerth worth, 1 of the posts above went on about the club just wanting a lick of paint not the mona lisa. Let's not forget it's ok us all wanting/agreeing on something fitting for Matt and Rich but the club CHANGE the gate every year to make money so i'm sure, with all the best will in the world, they would not agree to a permanent fixture unless they know they are gonna get a guaranteed donation every season.

This is gonna look ridiculous. . . just get a signwriter to do it professionally or a plaque. . . ffs that will look far classier than anything wrawbz is gonna spunk over it.
Folk on here all get a bit 'premature ejaculation' about things. . . like thst guy who when asked about a new stadium said it should be 20000 seater. . . in the shape of a trawler, with a net of fish in it, and haddock-shaped airship-scoreboards. .   its like being in the special class at primary school on here. . .

I think if the  club are happy it's worth a shot especially considering it will be done for free, will tidy up the gate even for a short while.

Needs a space leaving on it for the plaque that carries the sponsors name each year, which I sure the club would stipulate.

I think as long as everyone (including wrawbs who we should applaud for his offer - along with the others that might not end up being needed) realises that the club won't guarantee it will last more than one season (just in case it's naff or graffiti etc) then I can't see any harm.

It will lok sh1t for a year (and is gonna be a sh1t tribute and not in the spirit of the fundraising). . . its getting hijacked and turned into a laughing stock piece of '''''''art'''''''.  has wrawby ever painted a gate? All i have ever seen him do are formulaic computer generated/altered images that have been done on a cheap version of photoshop. . . mark ny words!

i`m all for wrawby  doing it maybe with the input of the lads` families and the agreement of the club, should be top secret till it`s done. Having a discussion about a design on here will take up the rest of the season, I am sure it will be in the best possible taste

Sorry old son but unless you you don't goto the games, ticket office, club shop etc you cannot fail to walk past it year in, year out with a different name/sponsor on it! Or see them advertising it every season!
Like it says in the telegraph article, it will only be for the rest of the year because they make money from having the name changed on it every year from the winning bidder. Maybe a set amount could be raised every year to keep it dedicated to Matty and Rich......

Don't know. The original ebay auction doesn't mention anything about it being just for a year.

I totally agree hence a meeting with the club to see what is and is not possible .. Giving it a new coat of paint is one thing but painting something else is another, even if any design is not painted on it we can say that the option was explored. I wouldn't have put my name forward if I was not confident in my own ability. My background is in fine art ant not in contemporary art and the digital art you have seen .. Just

All I'm saying is, if it comes out wrong, I'd be hardly be a fitting tribute to have their names on it, let alone the image it portrays of the club. Get some wire wool, take the rust off, and paint over it. Simple. Effective.

This sounds a good idea Matty always loved Harry Haddock, always moaned because i could not find mine. The last photo Matt ever had taken at an away match  v Wimbledon last season was with someones Harry H, could also put the words sing when were fishing underneath it.

It didn't mention that in the ebay listing.

Just re-read it to reassure myself and you're right. Nothing in there that mentions that it's for a year. Bit of an oversight by GTFC there

I am with the "keep it simple" idea to get the tribute done. Fancy ideas can wait. Tidy the gate up, get it painted (I like the black and white stripes idea for that) and get the memorial tribute done tastefully.

Having just returned from a brief meeting with Dale Ladson we both agreed that painting directly onto the gate would be both difficult would compromise the quality of any final piece. Basically what we have to play with is a canvas covering both gates with the total size of 13 feet high and 8 feet wide which is massive. The club thought as we are remembering two young Mariners a graffiti style or a style loosely based on that would be quite fitting. Materials will be ordered when I have submitted an idea the club approve of so the next step really is to come with some ideas, so if anybody would like to offer an idea or ideas i would really appreciate it. I will post some ideas of my own for the fishy communities consideration this evening.

I've just heard from Dale, and the gate will be for just a year. It wasn't something I was aware of when I started this, and it wasn't mentioned at all on the ebay listing, but its something the club have been doing for a few years now and it has always been for just a year.
It wasn't my intention (or the clubs) to mislead anyone, and if anyone wants to withdraw their pledge, or have their money returned, I understand completely. Please just send me a PM.
But I hope most of you will still see it a good tribute to the guys, even if it's not for as long as we thought.
Sorry,
David

Is that the plaque will only be for a year? That's a shame if so, but I'm still in.

Gotta say, I'm not too keen on the graffiti idea if I'm gonna be honest. That said, I'm looking forward to seeing some of the designs. Like others have already said, let's try and keep it tasteful (which I'm sure it will be) and not rush into anything. Full respect to you Wrawby for giving up your time to talk it through with the club.

just paint the gate pure white with no special patterns or stripes. until the end of the season put a simple sign up saying the dawson broadley gate. then during the close season put 2 plaques up with their names on. SIMPLE AS THAT

Are you intending to keep the lines in where you copy and pasted the silhouette?

I think you need to accept you're not and never will be a graphic designer.

Rough Ideas are rough ideas,  there is nothing wrong with any of the trust logos, and I designed them, in any case its going to be painted and not be printed so its more of a reference piece. You may not like anything I do but some people do and I do make a living out of it so I can't complain

I don't want to get into arguments re: the trust or indeed mean to be disparaging. All I'm saying is yes there is. I work with graphic designers daily and it all looks like it is done in paint or rudimentary photoshop. The dock tower in the trust logo leans more than pisa. It would be rejected out right by our team and if you can't see what's wrong with this, then I despair:

I'm not saying don't make an effort, I commend everyones work on the trust, however it's clearly not done by a professional. It's up to others if that's how they want it to be perceived. But if you're going to do this it has to look good, and knocking up and handwriting font and copy and pasting in a badge, maybe sticking a red stroke and a gradient around text is not a good look. I say this from the position of a professional.

Anyway, as I'm not offering my time towards helping it really is nothing to do with me so I'll shut up now.

My background is in acrylic paint not digital art so I apologise for not living up to a high end London graphic design standard.

I don't do things on the computer day in day out like your colleagues, I paint, not just the things you've seen on here but all different subjects and styles. All I wanted to do is do the only thing I am quite good at that my health allows. I have offered to sacrifice a week of my time to do something 1)Paint, something I love doing 2)Do something for fellow Town fans. All I was offering up was digital repesentations of a final piece that I would be quite happy to do.

Don't you dare tell me that I'm not good enough when you don't really know me, I get enough that when people laugh at the way I walk and the arthritis in my hands and arms because my accident, All I'm doing is trying to live my life to the best of my ability after some shitty circumstances.

You go for it Wrawbz.

It doesn't matter if Dan thinks it isn't professional enough. It comes from the heart of a fellow Mariner and that is worth more than any amount of slick end product.

Not an attack on you Dan,just my opinion.

Just because someone plays football it doesn't make them a footballer.

Coming from the heart, not being professional and not having a slick end product is not something I'd accept on the pitch, and it's not something i'd like scrawled on the gates. These things permeate through everything we do.

I'm not making this a personal attack. Not once I have said anything personal except in response to one on me. All i've said is that in my opinion, someone's work isn't good enough, and you'll get this at many points in your professional life. Fortunately I'm not the one commisioning it.

Coming from the heart, not being professional and not having a slick end product is not something I'd accept on the pitch, and it's not something i'd like scrawled on the gates. These things permeate through everything we do.

I get paid for my art and not out of sympathy either.

Not the point though is it?

You may not rate Wrawbz as an artist, graphic or otherwise, but he is doing this free of charge,in his own time and is a a fellow Mariner around the same age as the two young lads the gate project is honouring.

That is what is important in my opinion.

As i say,no axe to grind with you and your opinion is just as valid as mine, but it's just an opinion all the same.

have to say dan that you've made some fairly barbed comments that seem unnecessarily harsh. i think that you have some valid points to make, but maybe you could try and be a little more diplomatic on what is ,after all, a voluntary effort?

Well said, it needs to look good but some of the comments were a bit out of order. While Wrawby's artwork isn't the sort of thing that I'd have on my wall he clearly is better than what the vast majority on here could produce. If he comes up with a good suggestion and the club approve why shouldn't he do it? (No legends murals though please).

How were the Club originally going to 'name' the gate to the winning bid?
With plaques? A Sign?

P.S. like your last effort Warbz without the silhouette and have the club badge instead?

Maybe you should have not commented at all

I'm no artist or the like but here is my effort, a modified idea from Wrawbz.  I though we should make use of both gates, keeping it simple will be more striking.

I'm not making this a personal attack. Not once I have said anything personal except in response to one on me. All i've said is that in my opinion, someone's work isn't good enough, and you'll get this at many points in your professional life. Fortunately I'm not the one commisioning it.

I'm in Swvon atm and can't be bothered to go through all the past comments.. What's going on? I've already sent my money off... I thought I was paying £5 just for Ric hand Matts names on a gate? Is this to hard to ask?.. I thank you Wrabz for your effort and idea's, but surely all it needs is their names on not a big art design?

In a nutshell...

The gate's going to be named after Richard and Matt, but just for a year. Pledges have so far reached £347, and most people have already paid.
The club asked if we could give the gate a lick of paint, and we were looking into the idea of something a bit more interesting, but the club have come back and said that won't be possible (I think Wrawby is going to update us on that later).

Maybe next year we should aim to raise enough to pay for a five year lease on the gates and a clause for a space if we move grounds . Surely if we raised a grand thru donations and collections, the club would accept a guaranteed lump sum. We could then include small mementos of all fans that have recently passed away including Icey!

I think he's done a runner with our money, I've not had a PM back to confirm my donation    (only kidding)

Wigworld's probably working either on this project or earning some corn.

Earning. Set off for Bratford at 6am this morning and only just back. PM heading your way Marinerz93

I haven't touched base with Warwbz about what's happening with the gate yet. I've got a day off tomorrow to catch up with things, so will update then.

Marc, the latest is, as per instructions from the guys who bid on the gate, they are going to go with the original plan of a small sign with the lad's names on.

Looking back through my emails, I've got a feeling something I said to Dale may have been misinterpreted (probably my fault as I've worded it badly).

Trying to straighten it out, but probably won't be back on here until tomorrow.

Would any of these designs actually work?  As far as I can recall the gate is corrugated and so unless you're looking at the gate from the angle that it was painted, won't it look distorted?

Surely the best idea would be to paint the gate black and white stripes, which the corrugation would lend itself to well and then have a flat plaque with one of the desgins on, maybe on half of oneof the gates.

The plan was to apply metal panels to the gates

Metal panels would seriously bump up the price though.

By the time everyone has decided what's happened it'll be up for renewal again!
