It's all getting a bit 'heavy' on here at the moment, so I thought I'd lighten the load somewhat.

Which player lite up your afternoon when he played for the Town?

Super Clive in recent years, both Harry Wainman and Charlie Wright back in the days, along with Diddy Dave Boylen of course.

Futcher (Senior) was just such a ridiculously classy defender that I'll always appreciate having seen him play. No pace and getting on a bit when he played for us but still made opposition strikers look foolish with his reading of the game.

I don't mind Roy Keane making £60,000 a week. I was making the same when I was playing. The only difference was I was printing my own - Mickey Thomas

Tony Rees deserves a mention, for the Tony Rees flick alone...

When you look at some of the classy players we bought who were coming to the end of their careers and see what we got out of Fucther, Birtles, Whymark and Chirs Nicholl it was mind boggling. For my mind though it's a no brainer....Bobby Cumming.

Poor Bobby Mitchell - the latter day boo boy who was then replaced by Phil Bonnyman who the fans loved equally little.  Bobby looked pale against an all action hero like Joe Waters (my childhood hero) but I often wonder about the fact that George played him week in week out.  Joe was captain and must have felt Bobby was the right foil for him.  We loved to moan at him though!!

Pretty much every player that played under Alan Buckleys first reign, Gilbert, Childs, Mendonca, Knight, Rees, Cockerill, Cunnington, Woods, Handyside, Lever etc etc even Tommy Watson, it really was a genuine privelage to watch them week in, week out. But Paul Futcher was always my most loved player, he was absolutely outstanding, just gutted I missed his only goal in that Lincolnshire senior cup match.

Probably Danny Coyne. Apart from a shakey start he always gave his all every game and was exciting to watch. You could almost always expect a stunning save from him.

When i was younger i was a big Mendonca fan like most kids at that time he was just the man as far as town were concerned. So either one of those would be my pick.

The one that scores the goal that gets us promoted out of this god forsaken league!

Seriously, the players listed above show that you can achieve immortality in the hearts of Town fans - what better incentive can you have as a player, but to be adored by your fans. Come on Liam, Coulo, Dizza, etc - seize the moment!!

For a couple of years Andy Tillson was the classiest market gardener ever to grace BP. aside from him, Dave Gilbert was and probably always will be my favourite Town player. Everything about him was just class.

Oh for the good old days

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

I loved Livvo and Pouton the most. Feel sorry for those who have supported the Club for the last 5 years and have to pick from them..

Some great players named on this thread, makes you want to weep when you think what we've had and what we've got now.

Let's hope this current squad can make us proud again, one or two mifgr even be named in a simular thread in 10 years time (Hearn already according to at least one poster already).

Hence the winky smiley thing mate

I know at the time Bobby Mitchell was the one who brought on most of the moans and groans from the crowd but as you said he was part of a team that played some of the best stuff I've seen from a Town team so he can't have been all bad....

I'd like to think it was just that the rest of the lads around him were soooo good he looked average and in reality he was a pretty good foil for Joe W

One thing that sticks in my mind with him though was seeing Trevor Whymark bustle him out of the way when he was dithering in the penalty area and Trev duly stuck the ball home to give us a victory....against Notts County I think it was

Those were the days my friend..

It's obvious by a lot of the postings on this subject that many of the forum users never saw Bobby Cumming play. He was the hardest footballer I've ever seen, and am ever likely to see. It goes without saying that his legendary status at BP made him the hate figure for all the travelling Yorkie clubs when they came down en masse. Although he was hard as nails, he was skillful too, and equally at home at left back, where he probably invented the overlapping full back role, left of midfield - so often a problematic area, or up front where I think he was top scorer for us one season. There was nothing he couldn't do, and my fondest memory of him was going off injured in a League Cup tie and BP against Huddersfield with a gaping head wound and blood all over the place, then coming back on 5 minutes later only to score the winning goal with a diving header. Pure majesty.......
A measure of the man as well was that you never, ever, heard any Town fan have a bad word to say about him. Off the pitch he was as quiet and unassuming guy as you could ever hope to meet. Thanks for the memories Bobby. Pity the Clarke and Hunter incidents aren't on video for posterity's sake.

Pouts... tripple step-overs, own goals from the half way line, overhead kick penalty area clearances, lunging high tackles (always designed to miss, but scare), big engine and bigger heart. We'd never have gone down to League 2 if we hadn't sold him. He clearly didn't want to leave, he even turned up and paid to watch several of our matches that season when Gillingham didn't have a game..

Good to see the topic turning to those magical early eighties. Who went to the the Hull v Town game in 1980 at their place? Anyone remember Joe Waters decking one of their players after Bobby C was sent flying after a horrible challenge? I've never met anyone who went and can't believe it was just a dream.

Just remembered Doug Collins (how could I have forgotten him?): sold to Burnley but turned up at mid-week away games for years afterwards, a great player and a great bloke too.

We've had some true greats at GREAT GRIMSBY.

None cos i am a man and man love is wrong as far as i am concerned.

However i held Bobby C in great awe, aggression, determination, decent in the air and those cutting inside moments ending with a goal in the far top corner.

Glad he played before i fully appreciated the game and attending Blundell Park was an exciting event rather than a tiresome chore.

Would hate to realise he actually only did that every half dozen games or so and really was not all that i remember him as.

John Cockerill for me, every time I need a pick me up following Town I go back to my memory bank and recall a couple of Cockers magic moments.  The first is him hand delivering letters on a cold and wet night in winter trying to raise support for the club.  We had fallen to 4th Bottom of Div 4, first season under AB if I remember rightly.  The second is him going through that Exeter player to send us up from Div 3 to what is now the Championship and spend 6 seasons there.

Supporting the Mighty Mariners for over 30 years, home town club is were the heart and soul is and it's great to be a part of it.

Jesus’ disciple Peter, picked up a fish to get the tribute money from it, Jesus left his thumb print on the fish, bless'ed is the Haddock.

Livo for me. Everything a player should be, apart from skillfull. If Livo and Woods had a love child then would have been a great player.

I will never forget where I was the day Kennedy was stabbed.

Good to see the topic turning to those magical early eighties. Who went to the the Hull v Town game in 1980 at their place? Anyone remember Joe Waters decking one of their players after Bobby C was sent flying after a horrible challenge? I've never met anyone who went and can't believe it was just a dream.

I was there but can't remember that incident. I do remember getting clattered by a police horse before the game.

Most loved Town players in no order;

Clive Mendonca
Bobby Cumming
Joe Waters
Paul Futcher
Ivano Bonetti

John Cockerill for me, every time I need a pick me up following Town I go back to my memory bank and recall a couple of Cockers magic moments.  The first is him hand delivering letters on a cold and wet night in winter trying to raise support for the club.  We had fallen to 4th Bottom of Div 4, first season under AB if I remember rightly.  The second is him going through that Exeter player to send us up from Div 3 to what is now the Championship and spend 6 seasons there.

Cockers goin thru that Exeter player to score wudda bin dissallowed these days , and the least cockers wudda got wudda bin yellow... possibly red... times have changed in too many ways for us... boo hoo....

Bobby Cummings. Brick walls used to shake at his name. A genuine and true legend to anyone who saw him play.
