Really gutted tbh. I met Matty a few times and he was genuinely a kind and friendly guy. It's also a big shame that GTFC had to so excrement for him just before he passed-let's hope they win on Saturday, for Matty.

RIP mate, Henry.

When I finish work I'm ringing the club I just feel like Matty deserves a minute applause against Cambridge, He has followed Town home and away and more importantly followed town nearly every single away match last season while still battling cancer, for that I have the utmost respect for matt always upbeat when things looked so down fro him, I feel honored to of known him, Really gutted

I've never known anyone to be so upbeat when faced with a cavalcade of terrible medical problems and a excrement football team. Makes me angry that Town have been so awful over the last few years as Matt deserved much more than that with all he's had to put up with. RIP

Different lad wikkers.

Deepest condolences go out to his friends and family, I knew nothing of the lad but its surely a testament to how brave he was to still be living his life to the fullest right until the end of his cruelly short time with us.

I logged on here this morning with every intention of going on a rant about how far Town have sunk, instead I saw this and my anger over a stupid game of football has gone.

Shankley was so far off the mark it's unreal.  I didn't even know this poor lad, aside from reading his posts on here, but I feel as if someone's just chucked a bowling ball down my throat.

Deepest of sympathies to his family.

RIP.

I had the honour of meeting Matty and his parents last week.  Both showed tremendous strength in the face of what, to many, are truly unimaginable circumstances.

After spending just under an hour with him, it was clear that he was one of Town’s most passionate, knowledgeable and dedicated fans. The bravery and fortitude that he showed, despite his illness, was remarkable.

My thoughts go out to his family and all his friends at this time,

Rest in peace Matty

Words cannot describe how I'm feeling right now, how we're all feeling right now, and my thoughts go out to your family. I am exremely proud to call you my friend and someone who I could share my problems with as you shared yours with me. Sitting, on the most part next to you at home games l was fit enough to attend taught me that no matter how how bad you think your own problems are, there is always some who has it worse and is dealing with it better. Matty Dawson you inspired me to get back on my feet and walk without help. There is not alot else I can say except you are a great guy and fantastic mate, also some divine intervention this season may be of use.

Quoted from Wrawby_Mariner
Words cannot describe how I'm feeling right now, how we're all feeling right now, and my thoughts go out to your family. I am exremely proud to call you my friend and someone who I could share my problems with as you shared yours with me. Sitting, on the most part next to you at home games l was fit enough to attend taught me that no matter how how bad you think your own problems are, there is always some who has it worse and is dealing with it better. Matty Dawson you inspired me to get back on my feet and walk without help. There is not alot else I can say except you are a great guy and fantastic mate, also some divine intervention this season may be of use.

With Love and Respect

Very sad news - I didn't know Matty, but he sounds to have been a real battler against a cruel disease, and courageously positive in the light of overwhelming adversity. My condolences to his family and friends.

R I P Matty. Sat behind you in the pontoon a few times, nice lad. Seems like we're losing a few lately.
Very sad news.

I was there, the day Bradley Wood scored a 35 yarder!

Was thinking last night when watching the over reaction by many that it was only a football match and not that important in the context of things. This news proves my thoughts.

Only spoken to Matt a couple of times, through taking Wrawbz to the home games, seemed like a nice lad, obviously passionate about Town. Something like this puts everything else into perspective and I've read this thread with a lump in my throat.
Heartfelt condolences to your family and friends

Have been thinking about Matty since I first saw the news and I'm not ashamed to admit that I've been in tears. I got to know Matty quite well over the past year or so and we'd had a few personal chats between us over that time.

I've not been in the best emotional state recently myself and after coming round from surgery only to hear that we'd lost so heavily to Braintree I was devastated and very angry and then to hear the news about Matty just made everything that happened last night inconsequential.

This, had made me all the more determined to get out of here as soon as possible and I then plan to hold some sort of fundraising event in Mattys memory (and ideas) and all proceeds raised will go to a charity of Mattys families choice.

It's times like this that makes me wonder if there is anybody up there as if there is why are they so cruel, life is so unfair.

RIP MATTY. YOU'LL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. THAT NUMBER 24 SHIRT IN THE PROGRAMME SHOULD BE YOURS FOR LIFE.

such terrible news. I met Matt a few times and never once heard him complain about being ill...he was too busy chatting about Town! only the other week we were talking online about how excited we were for the new season and the high hopes we had for Town. a really lovely kid who shouldnt have had to have gone through what he did over the last few months. His fight, dedication and optimism should be an inspiration to all fans and the team. RIP Matty and UTM!

RIP Matt, a really brave young man, such a shame.

Like others have said, was so angry and ashamed about Grimsby Town yesterday I could not put into words how I felt, but now it just doesn't seem to matter now.

Makes me wonder if there is a God and if there is why take away the good, decent people in life.

Like previously mentioned, I hope their is a minutes silence or a round of applause at the next home game as a mark of respect for this brave young gentlemen.

My thoughts to all family and friends in this time of sadness.

Sad news about this lad Matty, Grimsby Les, who many of you will know, mentioned his passing on Exeweb.

I would like to express my condolences to his friends and family, 19 is far too young an age to be losing someone at.

RIP Matty from a fellow football fan.

Gutted! Had the pleasure of speaking to Matt at a couple if games last season, lively lad and was always singing load and proud!! Makes you realise just how unimportant and insignificant football really is!

Really hope the club do something for the next home match.... Minute's applause/silence?

Sleep well matey!

I've just re-read the whole of the "Cancer Journey" thread. What struck me even more was the matter of fact way that this incredibly brave young man dealt with the increasingly bad news that he was getting. I am almost three times his age and yet I know without a shadow of doubt that if I'd walked in his shoes I'd have done it as a gibbering wreck.

That thread should be locked and saved for posterity so that anyone fed up at the fortunes of the team can look at it and remind themselves of someone who faced terrible illness with the utmost dignity.

Thoughts are with Matt's parents. The old adage is true. You just shouldn't bury your kids...

The aim of argument or discussion should not be victory but progress.

Didn't realise until i came on here how many friends Matty really had, when the funeral arrangments have been made the family will post it. All that can be said at the min about it, is that it is not a black tie job, the family want a celebration of Matty's life and for everyone to wear football shirts. As most people on here should now realise Matty lived and died football.

i first saw him in the imp on Saturday,he was in a wheelchair with all kinds of pipes and stuff coming out of him, this lad comes out in that state to support his team, whilst other "fans" of town sit in their armchairs with their doritos and opinions slagging the team, the chairman, and most importantly the real "fans" off. i looked him in the eye and he smiled at me,even at that stage of illness he was friendly, positive, warm, and a real true fan.
i looked at him and felt embarrassed, not for him,but for myself, for he made me feel so humble with his bravery and spirit.
i know its way to early but if his poor parents ever read this thread they will realise he was special, not because he had cancer, but because he touched so many peoples lives and everyone who knew him loved him............rest in peace matty,we town fans will NEVER forget you xxxx.

So, so, sorry to hear of the lad's sad passing. So very glad though that the Town visited him prior to it and made him feel so very special. Surely that puts most things into context...you can make dreams, and destroy them. Never met you Matty but feel I know you from your postings on here, and your bravery in the face of such adversity. If Icenian's reading this, take care of Matty.

I've stayed off this forum all day and logged on a minute ago to have a rant about town, But now I don't give a toss about the result or team. It makes you realise how precious life is and how you should make the most of it. I only knew Matt through here and facebook but seemed like a top lad.

Rest in Peace Matt.

Cant believe it, just sat here waiting for my taxi to go back into hospital.  Thought I,d have a quick look to see if Matt had commented on Tuesday night only to get this news. Only got to know Matt through the forum but really thought of him as a friend. Cant put in words how gutted I feel right now, my thoughts are with his family and friends, so sad and tragic. You are a star and legend my friend, so glad you managed Tuesday night, makes it even more special now. RIP Matt.

I just thought I'd say a couple of my Leicester mates who have nothing to do with The Fishy or GTFC have also liked the Facebook page set-up in memory of Matty, so word is spreading and fans of all clubs are showing their respect towards a lad who was a true fighter. Just goes to show how insignificant football is and yet its ability to bring people together at the same time.

Living in London I can't make im afraid but im sure there's a lot of people on here who will be mate. My thoughts are with you and the rest of Matt's family. As you can tell by the posts on here Matt was a legend, a brave one at that, and he will NEVER be forgotten by the Fishy Folk.

EDIT: Also, is there a specific charity Matt supported?   Cheers

I have just returned from two days away with work, and I have just read with great humility, this heart rendering thread about Matty.
I first met Matty towards the last few games of last season, when he introduced himself to me at a home game, through a mutual friend, Marc Reed.Having previously read about Matty's plight on his journey thread, I understood, to a degree what he was going through.
I can only say that he was clearly, absolutely mad on Town and this was clearly evident throughout our conversation. Not once did he show any signs of feeling sorry for himself, despite his predicament.
I remember Matty being on the "Battlebus" to Wimbledon on the last game of last season with his Dad and remember thinking how much he seemed to enjoy the day.The sun shone brightly that day, just as I hope it is shining on you now Matty.
Through reading the Fishy, following the Donny friendly, it was apparent that Matty was seriously ill.
I went to see Matty a couple of weeks ago, at his home in Louth, to give him my best wishes and to try and add some cheer to his day, through talking to him about the Mariners.
I was welcomed  into his home by members of his family and when I went up to see him, I was delighted to see him sat in his chair, laptop across his knees, surfing his beloved "Fishy".We had a chat, and I remember thinking what an outstandingly courageous young man, I had had the great privilege to have met. He was cheerful and positive, even in the face of great adversity, and a credit to his family.
Before I left, following my short visit, I chatted to his Mum, Dot, who I can only describe as an absolute rock for her son.She told me how Matty and the family had enjoyed a family holiday to Paris and they had spent great quality time together. As I thanked her for her time and left, I felt a great sense of sadness at the injustice in this world.Imagine my surprise when Matty summoned the courage and belief to entertain Michael Leary, meet the management and players at both the training ground and in hospital and share this with us all on the Fishy! Fantastic! He attended the Fleetwood game too and proudly wore his squad number, as did his family!
I am sorry to say that this was the last time I spoke to Matty and I am deeply saddened by his loss.
I would just like to finally say that we are all proud of you Matty and I add my tribute to you, to the hundreds of others on your favourite Town website.Good night - God bless fellow Mariner!

Thanks for a great read Ponny, really brought a tear to my eye

A great post Ponnyfan. Sums up just how well Matty was thought of by everybody. I think he touched the lives of everyone he came in contact with, not only on here and I don't think you'll find many other people that would apply too. Hopefully I will be out of hospital in time to attend Mattys funeral and pay my own personal respects  but whatever happens I will be thinking about Matty and his family at that time.

Also you look after yourself Les and do not rush coming back to see the Mighty Mariners to soon.

(WELL THAT WILL BE A WASTE OFF TIME WILL IT NOT)

Great to see you Saturday Les and hope things go right for you in the future.

Thanks for that Dave but I don't want to divert this thread away from Mattys memory. I'm sure many people on here will be going to Mattys funeral and I hope that the club will be well represented too, but I would like to propose that everyone who reads this, if they are not going to the funeral, should take just a couple of minutes time for thoughts about Matty at 11am next Wednesday.

Quote from Sutton Mariner.

Cheers

If any one would like to give to charity Matts chosen charity is CLIC Sargent who looked after children with cancer, who was with us on this journey from day 1 up until the final day. The details for Matty's funeral arrangments and donations are in todays GET.

And I'm sure Marc North and Big Keef will have bored them both to tears by now telling them all about our win at Middlesborough.

Just shy of two years ago (17th Sept 2009 to be precise) my brother and mentor lost his long battle with this awful disease. Two days later on the 19th,which would have been my Dads birthday if he had still been with us,we played Torquay away.It was also the day that my partners youngest daughter started uni at Sunderland and her mother was driving her there.I decided to go along, just to take my mind off things and we set off early in the morning.

It was a pleasant trip on empty roads and we duly dropped her off and got her settled in.On the way back,we had just passed Hartlepool and i could see my partner was upset,so i suggested we stop somewhere for a breather. She pulled over in some delapidated ex mining village south of Hartlepool and we walked across some grassland to the beach, sat down and both burst into tears while looking out to sea.I was upset about my brother and she was upset at "losing" her youngest.

It got me thinking about the cycle of life.My brother had lived his life and my partners daughter was just starting out on adulthood, with all that life entails before her.

Young Matt never got any of that and it's so sad to read of his passing at such a young age.Life can be so cruel.

On the way home after our stop,i suddenly remembered Town were playing away at Torquay, which was one of my brothers favourite places, having worked there as a young man.I tried to tune into Humberside but no go,we were too far North, but somewhere around York,i finally found it and we were winning. We went on to record a rare away victory and i felt a little better about things.

It could be said that football doesn't matter at a time like this, but Matt thought it mattered and he lived for his football and GTFC.I really hope we can win on Saturday just to raise the general mood a bit and i'm sure Matt would smile down on us.

Understand where you're coming from Ginnywings....

Football, especially The Mariners, clearly meant so much to Matty as it does to most of us on here....it's inextricably linked with all the other things that go on in our lives

It might have to take a back seat when the real tragedies such as his young life being taken stops us in our tracks, but it's there in the background, running parallel to the more important issues

I recall the day my dad passed on (also a victim of the big "C" ) and as devasted as I was I knew that less than an hour after he died we were playing Northampton at home....my dad had been based there when in the army and was a cobbler himself, with his soul going to a better place when we were playing the Cobblers. In my own little world, right amongst my grief, I couldn't believe the irony.

I feel it's times like this that you recognise your own mortality and the scene you portrayed looking out on that beach is also really poignant....my eldest found out this week she has won a place at uni and I can't help but think she's only a couple of years younger than Matty. Life is so unfair sometimes and lots of poor Matty's dreams will never be realised when he was at a stage in his life where the world should have been his oyster.

I so feel for his parents and other family members right now, knowng their hurt will last them a lifetime with only good memories available to them

One thing that I hope comforts them though is the support they have from this Fishy community....we all share the same hopes and dreams for our club but at our lowest point, the sad news on the field totally over-shadows by the loss of one of our own.

You can do, all we want to do now is to raise as much money as possible for his chosen charity, in the pass  Matty and his family has raised between £1000 and £1500 pound in the last 2 years.
Not a lot of people have heared of CLIC Sargent, but they look after young people up to the age of 23, the first day we arrived at QMC Nottingham we were sat in the waiting room and the first people we saw were CLIC Sergent, and they have been with us from day 1 right up to the end.

I don't mind Roy Keane making £60,000 a week. I was making the same when I was playing. The only difference was I was printing my own - Mickey Thomas

Just got back to read this terrible news ,i only met Matty the once when he bought some Town memorabilia from me and i only hope he got some pleasure out of it.Like Ginny says football has the wonderful ability to raise spirits and if the Town players show some guts and passion about the shirt just maybe Matt will be smiling down tonight at 5pm.

Just reread his story, have a lump in my throat. Only met him on a handful of occasions but what a nice lad he was.
Think your end statement might be true sutton

Yeap Matt'y is now looking down and smiling,   the week before his death, Scott n Hurst asked him for his prediction for the coming season, and he said the play offs. Going back to 2007 in the Paint Pot Trophy after the first match he predicted Town would get to the final, and we all laughed at him. I hope that his prediction for the play offs work out this season, and come May we are all celebrating a return to the football league.
