Just a thread to pass the between seasons boredom.

Pose a footy trivia question - first correct sets the next question.

Here's a fairly easy one to start. Name the teams who play in the English League which are furthert North, furthest South, furthest East and furthest West.

Ok then, here's a riddle.

My final goal for town, was not my last. After leaving town, I spent time as a religious figure, before getting involved in building materials and then working as a fisherman before heading east. My current team had a stab at one but it wasn't enough.

Who am I?

Ok, here's a question that crops up every now and again so some will probably know the answer straight away.

"Which British footballer scored a goal at his home ground for the away team and it wasn't an own goal?"

I knew someone would get it straigh away.

He scored for Scotland against Wales when, for some reason, the match was played at Anfield.

Reading and Preston are able to wear there home kit in any game that they play due to Preston winning the first ever championship and Reading being from the Royal county though some believe  Reading's away trip to Brighton & Hove Albion in the 1992/93 season. That year, the Reading marketing people introduced the new first team kit of blue and white hoops, to general acclaim. However, they were also exceptionally stupid (no change there!) and created a reserve strip of yellow and blue hoops. When we played away to a side with blue in their shirts, and so had to wear our change strip, quite a few referees took one look at the Reading away shirts and said that the game couldn't possibly take place like that. is the reason Reading are able to

New question - which British league club has a unique last letter (ie no other club's name ends with the same letter)?

Nice one Les. Peter Hill Wood's family had something to do with them I think.

My favourite trivia question has been used before on here by me (probably more than once), so here's one shamelessly stolen:

Which club has played the most seasons in the second tier of English Football without ever having been promoted to the first tier?

I know until recently it was Hull but I'm not sure now. Plymouth maybe?

Probably wrong but I'll check back in the morning.

Right. Which English international footballer, also played cricket for England, turned out for Southampton in an FA Cup Final, once equalled the world long jump record, could supposedly leap backwards onto a mantlepiece, reputedly declined to become King of Albania, and beat Charlie Chaplin at table tennis using a butter knife?

(actually I'm not so sure that last one was him but it kind of fits).

No,it was the King of Albania bit that I remembered.

Two brothers played for Arsenal, at least one of them was in the team that beat Town in the FA cup and one of them played for England at cricket . His name is easy but what was the other one's christian name?

Singers was definitely Coventry and I think Pine Villa was Oldham. Not too sure about Stanley FC. Obvious answer is Accy but as an educated guess I'll go for Everton (Stanley Park)

Correct and here's the proof:

"Mark Viduka of Australia scored 25 goals for Celtic in season 1999-2000. Fellow Australian Scott McDonald was top scorer in 2007-08."

Whilst waiting for Wrawbz have a go at this one. Should be answered fairly quickly I reckon.

Name the only 2 teams to have suffered 3 successive relegations from being in the top flight of English football.

Correct. Bristol City were relegated in 80, 81 and 82 and Wolves was 84, 85 and 86 I think.

I can only think of 7 who have 2 or more league clubs.

Sheffield
Bristol
London
Birmingham
Manchester
Nottingham
Liverpool.

Unless of course you're including non-league then you've got Cambridge and possibly a few more.

Could be any number really. Especially the way the armband is passed about in friendlies now.

Gerrard, Beckham, Terry, Lampard, Ferdinand the most obvious I suppose.

Pretty certain it's Bolton - 72 years in the top flight.

Ok here's one....

Which competition and game am I talking about ?

At the time it was played....

- The only penalty to be missed in a final.
- Had only the 2nd player to score in 2 finals (but not successive ones)
- At the time of the final, losers were European champions and had not lost to another European country for 4 years.
- Had 2nd ?????? to captain a winning side. [PS Just blanked out don't pay any attention to the number of ?]

1982 WORLD CUP FINAL
Italy 3 West Germany 1
The only penalty to be missed in a World Cup final and only the 2nd player(Paul Breitner 1974, 1982) to score in 2.
At the time of the final, West Germany were European champions and had not lost to another European country for 4 years.
Dino Zoff was the 2nd goalkeeper to captain a World Cup winning side.

Good stuff. I didn't know about the penalty but the rest of it fitted into place.

Barnet's part of Greater London.

There was a team called Thames who were around in the late 20's early 30's, I presume they were based in London.

That's them.

Thames Association FC, based in Customs House, were in the Third Division South for only two seasons from 1930 to 1932 before folding. They had a stadium capacity of 120,000 but just 469 fans saw them play Luton Town in Division Three - a Football League record low.

Everytime Birmingham have been relegated theyve been replaced by Norwich?

Very close again but not quite the stat I'm looking for.

They haven't played in the same division for a long time?

Is that their club honours now mirror each others? I know they have both won the league cup twice each now, do they now also have the same amount of promotions and relegations also? Total guess but if it isn't that maybe its time for a clue Les?

Between all the guesses it's almost been answered but the exact coincidence I was looking for is...

In 1985 Norwich won The League Cup and were relegated in the same season and were replaced by Birmingham who finished runners-up in the 2nd tier.
In 2011 Birmingham won The League Cup and were relegated in the same season and were replaced by Norwich who finhed runners-up in the 2nd tier.

Try this one then.

Which player in this seasons Premiership has the most international caps.

I think the last player we actually signed was Kilmore as I think Beagrie was a free agent when  we signed him.

You are indeed correct Biggles. The answer is Vitālijs Astafjevs who won 167 caps for Latvia and made 108 appearances for Bristol Rovers between 2000-03.

I know it's not my turn but there was a good question on FiveLive on Saturday.

Name 8 (possibly 9 - there was a debate on air) players who have played for a Spanish club and two of Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool.

I'll give Michael Owen to make the question clear - Liverpool, Man Utd and Real Madrid.

Hmm, it's bound to be one of the big plastic monstrosities that have sprung up next to a motorway junction. I'll guess the Ricoh.

Alan Wright, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Aaron Lennon and Juninho......

I think the last one will be Emiliano Insua, when he originally joined Liverpool they gave his height as 5'5'', the same height as Wright-Phillips.

Only teams that have won the FA Cup can have triangular flags, as an extra note: Only teams that have won the cup 3 times can have their emblem on the flag.

Right, have a go at this one and try to see how many you can get without resorting to Google.

The Premier League is overrun with foreign players these days but on the opening day of the first ever Premier League season in 1992 only ELEVEN foreign players started the first round of fixtures.

Can you name them and their clubs.

By foreign I mean non UK or Ireland.

I thought Cantona moved from Leeds to Utd in the close season before the Prem started,
Didnt Leeds win the last Div 1 title with EC in it?
Oh well, must be mistaken

I have a slightly different list that doesn't include Warzycha or Rosenthal. The list I have is the players who started the games so maybe they were subs. There's also one name on my list missing from yours.

Correct - Tony Dorigo was the last one, for Leeds.

I'm not sure of the exact percentages but I think it was reported that when Bobby Robson was England manager around 1990 he had over 80% of top flight players to choose from whereas now Fabio Capello has less than 30% of Premiership players eligible for England.

Steve Watson & Alan Stubbs?

And was Moyes Everton manager when David Ginola played his handful of games for Everton a while ago?

Thought me might have been at Newcastle with Dalglish and Moyes at Everton.

I'll think on and get back to you later unless someone else comes up with the other 2.

Kevin. Good call Terry, don't think I'd have got that one.

That would explain England's stellar performance at Euro 88.

And Dorigo played for England so a bit of a dodgy one that

He was born in Australia though, that makes him Australian in my eyes.

That alan wright was tiny too wasn't he? played for villa. Proper tiny. He played against us this year i seem to remember.

I was there, the day Bradley Wood scored a 35 yarder!

From the black and white striped shirts
To the fish in the sea
You'll hear us singing
Coz we are Grimsby.

You won't hear us crying
But you'll hear us shout
Coz we are the Grimsby
And this is our chant.......... Grimsby! Grimsby! Grimsby!
