Get an album by Longview called Mercury. I've recommended this to many people and they are all very happy! You may not have heard of them but this album is quality!

I love both the Arcade Fire albums, just that Funeral is in the current loop. Would agree about them live as well. I saw them at Leeds festival a few years ago and they were amazing. New Super Furries album due shortly. Can't wait.

Saw Queen at the Gardens in 74 (at the time of Queen 2 album) They made everyone sit on the floor. Thought they were the absolute highlight of Live Aid. Radio GaGa was absolutely brilliant. Having said that the only Queen album I own is "Night at the Opera".

In 1983 when he sacked Mick Jones he went into a huge decline and only got his creative shit together in 1999 when he formed The Mescalaros; they went on to produce some excellent albums - worth checking them out.
A DVD of his life story came out a year or so ago, called "Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten" - absolutely worth watching that.

Very true. Psychomodo is a great album and the live version of "Tumbling Down" on Face to Face is up there as one of the best live tracks of all time (IMO). Did you see them at the Central Hall in the early 80's? Bizzare venue but a great gig.

I'm not too far behind you barralad and I think it's a good statement the the music of the last 15 years or so is of a quality that it can still be appreciated by silly old gits. I think the only period of music that really did my head in was the rave scene late 80's. I have not seen one mention of any of that music on this thread. I have been to see a few of the newer bands with my nephew, and my neices' boyfriend and have thoroughly enjoyed the concerts despite being one of the older ones there. They just don't like it when I throw a few wicked shapes on the dance floor though

I think thet were supported by Dirty Tricks.. the next big thing in 76.. they now tour as a Led Zep tributeband called Stairway to Zeppelin! Theres some good vids on UTube of the Streetwalkers circa 76 that bring a few memories back!

The Gardens in the 70's on a Thursday night was THE place to be. Only now can we truly appreciate how lucky we were. Most of the gigs were pay on the door if I remember rightly.
Saw Queen, Edgar Broughton Band, Sparks (their first ever British gig), Manfred Mann's Earthband, Cockney Rebel, Be Bop Deluxe, Stranglers, Sex Pistols etc. Utterly superb stuff!!!

This is very true. A friend of mine recently opined that this is the first "generation" where kids and oldies are virtually listening to the same music and it forges some links between the generations. There is no way my parents would have listened to anything that I was listening to.
If you go to a concert no-one bats an eyelid if you are older. Equally I was impressed by the younger turn-out at Billy Bragg at the Engine Shed in Lincoln.

I somewhat pride myself on my memory but freely admit you have got me doubting myself now. It could have been 76. According to Wikki they only formed "late 73". Definitely don't remember them playing more than one gig at the W.G.

I somewhat pride myself on my memory but freely admit you have got me doubting myself now. It could have been 76. According to Wikki they only formed "late 73". Definitely don't remember them playing more than one gig at the W.G.

Well not wanting to drag this on too much, but I went with a guy who had his leg in plaster and I can relate that to him playing cricket, or rather not playing cricket in 1976 because of that. I can remember that but I can never remember where I put my glasses!!

But mainly agree with anyone who mentions Oasis, Stone Roses, Arctic monkeys, Charlatans, The Strokes (is this it), ...and the Bluetones debut album was a corker!! Beatles - Rubber Soul, manics - everything must go, ...........i could go on...courteeners album is good also!!!

Neil Young is having something of a resurgence in popularity. Was in HMV on Saturday and of the three people in front of me, two were buying After the Goldrush and Harvest.
"Only Love Can Break Your Heart" is one of the greatest songs ever especially the descant refrain !

Saw Thin Lizzy last year, or the bastardized version that wheels itself around these days as Thin Lizzy, I sacked it off after they opened with a rubbish version of whisky in the jar. At the moment its all about Boxer by the national, Grey Britain by Gallows and Boys and girls in America by the hold steady.

He's my all time musical hero. Aside for the dodgy eary 1980s Geffen years, he's been consistently superb for 40 years.
So many near perfect albums; After the Goldrush, Tonight's the Night, Rust Never Sleeps, Sleeps with Angels, Freedom, Ragged Glory, Weld, Everybody Knows this is Nowhere, On the Beach, Broken Arrow, Harvest, American Stars and Bars etc etc etc
Amazing.
Also so many superb live gigs that I've been to over the years; the next being in Nottingham in 3 weeks time...

Must agree...Joe Bonamassa is very very good! Saw him in Wolverhampton in April and he gave a great gig, good to see some of the audience were under 65 though! Songs like Mountain Time and Happier Times are more than good blues songs. I see he had Clapton joining him at the Albert Hall last month!

Yeah, shame really. It would have been great to see them live again. I saw them at The Winter Gardens in the early 80s. I didn't even realise they were still going. Another fave band of mine that have been going for years are Stiff Little Fingers. Still going strong today despite a few line up changes but still with their original lead singer Jake Burns, and had their 30th Anniversary gig in 2007 when they played Inflammable Material in track order and then a medley of favourites. "At The Edge" was my theme song when I was about 15.

If you're picking a Streets album it has got to be 'Original Pirate Material'. Nothing he has done since has been in the same league. Likewise 'The Libertines' is a sorry, sorry imitation of 'Up the Bracket'.

Original Pirate Material is a good album, i just prefer the story thats told in A Grand Don't Come For Free. As for The Libertines i just prefer more songs in The Libertines than Up the Bracket.
