Surprised at that. Thought we would stick with 5 at the back. I guess it’s to facilitate Green coming back in.
A more attaching line up than anticipated.

Head says we lose and lose comfortably tonight. No great shame in that given it’s the second looong trip in the space of 4 days away at the league leaders.
Heart says it’s going to be one of those classic Town, backs against the wall, score our only effort on goal away victories.
We’ll find out soon enough.

Tonight's a bit of a free hit isn't it? Performance and how much guts we show against the early league leaders are probably more important than the result.
When was the last time we won 3 League Two matches in a row? Depressingly it was January to February 2019 when we won 4 consecutive games.

Fair play. It’s bold. Hope it works.
Feel unusually relaxed about this game.
Expect us to lose away to the leaders. Would be delighted with a point and ecstatic with another 3 points. Maybe it’s because being in comfortable mid table allows you that little bit more sense of perspective and a bit less of the alarm.

Tharme not being fit enough to play twice in 4 days is probably part of it too.

I do think there is the potential for us to get an absolute rinsing 4,5,6 if we do that ‘not bothering with basics’ defending that we’ve been prone to at times. Fingers crossed we don’t get a spanking.

Gillingham have scored 12 goals in 8 games- the same as us. However they have conceded just 2 goals in those 8 matches whilst we have shipped in 14.
So hopefully we won't get embarrassed.

I'm not too concerned if we don't get a good result but I would like to see the game being a close one with us having spells in the game where we compete and have chances of our own. It almost sounds defeatist in a way, that we're here as a raffle winner when we're actually in the same division on merit, but if these are top - and they've proven to be a good side so far - and we can go toe to toe with them and not look out of place then it gives further evidence that we're moving the right direction.
I think over the last few weeks we've started to gain consensus from all viewpoints that we are progressing but it's the rate of improvement that I think is a sticking point for those of a more critical nature. Where we can all accept that we won't win every game, and away to the league leaders as is tough as it can get at this point, then falling the wrong side of a tight game suggests we're knocking on the door and it won't be long before we're in.

The Gills missing a couple tonight, including Bradley Dack.

That’s a minging goalkeeping ensemble for the new lad. Presumably not allowed to wear red shorts and socks as they match our outfield strip, which seems mad given that’s what keeper’s did for about 100 years or so until relatively recently.

It's what you want as an away team. Frustrate the home team and get the fans on their backs. Plenty of teams did that to us over the years.

What the team needs at a time like this with two injured keepers, he's had to come in last minute but looks full of confidence and it allows everyone else to do their job knowing he's reliable. Also that bit of swagger that's perhaps been missing since Max Crocombe where he's willing to stir things up and take a few liberties to frustrate other teams.

In a wierd way I feel like the injuries are benefitting us long term, players like khouri and green, maybe hume and rodgers who might not have played as many games if everyone had been fit, all improving and coming on really well, we could end up with a much stronger squad than if everyone had been fit from the start

His footwork is an upgrade on the other two for sure (the ball out to the right was excellent ) , he's very comfortable on the ball . Not sure about his actual keeping he hasn't had anything to do yet has he.

Chuffed to bits to be 1-0 up at half-time without the Gills really having come close to scoring.
That said, I think we need to reset at half-time more than they do. We’ve looked a little uneasy in possession since the goal, as we did the first 5 mins or so. Take it easy, relax a bit - let them be the ones stressing out.
We can do this.
Posted by: acko338, October 1, 2024, 8:45pm; Reply: 55
Hope our better 2nd halves recently continues tonight and hopefully go on to keep a hard fought win.
More goals would be a bonus, but the clean sheet is vital for confidence.
Notable that Hume and Green seem to have that through ball and run to receive well worked.
Jason a bit quiet so far, so maybe he needs to loosen up a bit this half.
Khouri getting a few hits to stop him running.
Their keeper looks a bit dodgy coming out for crosses.

Head says we lose and lose comfortably tonight. No great shame in that given it’s the second looong trip in the space of 4 days away at the league leaders.
Heart says it’s going to be one of those classic Town, backs against the wall, score our only effort on goal away victories.
We’ll find out soon enough.
I’d say my heart was right, but that would be doing a disservice to how good that second-half performance was in seeing the game out. Did the last ditch stuff well when we had to, but we barely had to. We’ve just done a proper fúcking job on the Gills - top of the league with a fat budget and a top manager.
Well fúcking done to everyone involved tonight. Absolutely fúcking marvellous.

Odd to hear their fans having a go at the referee, as he seemed alright to me.
Really good defensive performance in the second half and it's just a pity we didn't try the odd counter-attack, but I'll forgive them a defensive mindset, given the circunstances. Didn't think a huge amount of Gillingham. I think we've already faced better opponents this season, unless they were really just having an off day.

Great win. Disciplined, kept us shape and made it difficult for them to play their game at home. A little surprised they resorted to throwing on big men and going very direct for a team that's started as well as they have but we were very hard to break down.
Too many good performances to rattle off names, defensively we looked about as solid as we have all season and for a goalkeeper who only knew he was playing in this game from Sunday night onwards he was confident, commanded his box and had good game management to frustrate the other team. Never once looked out of place in the team.

That win was far better than a backs to the wall rearguard. There are times we will still need to look after the ball better and the ball needs to stick up top more, but the resilience and stubbornness was a fresh of breath air and good to see . Mceachran is looking a stronger better player who will only get better. I saw a plan, I saw players who wanted it, and although we need to manage our expectations going forward. That was bloody needed wasn't it?

I've finally seen the goal now. Really good work by Hume again and a tidy finish as well. The fact that the highlights show no real clear-cut chances for them is a credit to the team.
Not bad for a team down to the bare bones due to injuries.

Something may be happening…
Have to imagine the 3 red crosses on this are Yoda, GrimPol and Male Private Nale. How dare we go and win three on the bounce to give us something to be happy about!!

Best move tonight was bringing Pyke on. Won balls, held the ball and drew fouls.

We’d have been in the playoffs tonight if it wasn’t for that meddling Clifton.
Hell of a result. Saturday should be electric,

Superb defensive performance, bodies blocking on the rare occasions they did threaten.
We’ve no one to fear in this league - no one is going to run away with it. Tasty prospect on Saturday…

I'm looking forward to a thread tomorrow on something random from Yoda because he doesn't have performances to whinge about to call for the manager's head.

What can say about that keeper performance. Did everything right from 1st minute to the last, hardly a save to make thanks to all the blocks but he just had that Futcheresque look of cool, calm and collected. Well done everyone though.

Gillingham forum is overwhelmingly complimentary about our defence tonight, rather than just the usual criticism of their own team. Nice to read that as often these things can get rather bitter!

10 out of 10 all round !
A proper professional defensive hold over the current league leaders.
Bookings showed that we were not going to be bullied out of the game.
Great chasing all over the pitch to deny them time to settle and play.
Good double covering against both their wingers.
Every penny earned tonight by the 15 who got on the pitch.
Hope that Green going off is only a precaution - got his steps in tonight.
Just need to do the same on Saturday. Full house expected??
(Please don't boo Harry on his return, he gave everything while he was here !! )

Ref was great, we were great, khouri and the 2CB’s outstanding
Thought Pyke looked slim and sharp too

Absolutely fantastic performance by Town. We battled and pressed them high up the pitch all night. There is absolutely no doubt that we deserved that result. A really good team effort, with a special mention for Smith who must have only met his teammates yesterday.

Superb. We've shown we can play football this season but that was showing the ability to grind out three points in a completely different way. Defensively rock solid.
I know it's early days and it's not going to be rosy every week but really excited about the future of this team.

Great team performance never looked like losing the game.
Jackson Smith looks a very decent keeper he was never in trouble and never dropped the ball .
Gillingham did not look like a team top of the league that's because we would not let them.
Bring on the Donny it's time we spanked them . ;D

One thing Pyke does add to a relatively slight team is some strength. Seems a very powerful lad though he's not of massive size. I wonder if he'll perhaps play a bigger role than any of us expected at the start of the season?
Khouri is looking consistently good so I'm wondering how the midfield will line up when Thompson returns? Similarly, McEachran and Green. Nine of them really deserve to be dropped, but you can't imagine Artell won't play Thompson when he's fit.

I think we will struggle to keep hold of Khouri, McJannet, McEachran and Svanthorsson (ultimately).
Thought the whole team were excellent. Tactics spot on and substitutions worked very well. Pyke did his role well.
Fantastic result.

Tremendous result.
It's not just the result though, it's the performance. The players worked their socks off. To think, it's not that long ago Hume, Green, Rodgers and Khouri were getting a slating on here.
In DA's pre-match interview he acknowledged that Gillingham had had a good start, but there was none of that bigging up the opposition stuff. Instead he said we can give anyone on this division a game. And we did.
I think he has instilled a real positive attitude and team spirit. Can we all get off his back now?
Well done DA and the players.
UTM!

I’ve read quite a few posts on here and on Twitter and, whilst the whole squad deserves praise tonight, I’ve got to heap plaudits on George McEachran who hasn’t dropped below a 7 out of 10 all season and really defines how we’ve played in the last few weeks. There’s no wonder he played for England at several age group levels.

Smith gave me Wayne Henderson vibes. Similar sort of stature. Didn’t really have to do anything crazy in terms of shot-stopping, but just looked really chilled and confident in everything he did. That kind of demeanour goes a long way, and perhaps it’s not a total coincidence that we’ve just seen not only our best defensive performance of the season, but possibly under Artell end of.
Decent kicking too. Looked comfortable and ready receive the ball outside his box.

Agree. Swindon fans didn’t have a single good word to say about him. It’s all about the manager. We’ve seen it before so many times.

Green puts more egg on my face, keep on doing it Greeny I don’t mind you proving me wrong! ( on the plus side I’ve always been a big advocate of Khouri).
Thought it was pretty much the perfect away performance with them having just one goal scoring opportunity all match. Brilliant at stopping the crosses coming in and what a difference that makes to defensive stability with the keeper looking so assured.
In closing a special word for Hume who has now created 3 goals in the last two games and two of them exquisite through balls after beating a couple of players ( and I didn’t think he was an improvement on Glennon). Demonstrated that sometimes you need to give players time to settle in and not be too quick in making judgement.

Not only did town turn in a very solid performance, the sky stream worked faultlessly. Kept expecting it to drop out as we got to the nervous last ten minutes but it was excellent

Which has virtually always been the case. Respect the fact you've admitted a mistake, but the bread and butter is whether you give other players a chance that never really found their groove.

This from the Gillingham fans forum, it wasn’t the only one either.
Grimsby were absolutely excellent today. They just completely shut us down tonight, pressing us off our rhythm, forced us into long, hurried passes which didn't (and rarely do) pay off - they defended their box brilliantly on the ground and in the air. Not saying they are better than us - I don't think they are man-for-man (although I'd take that Evan Khouri in a heartbeat - he was superb) - but there is no doubt they tactically stifled everything. Credit to Artell and their tacticians - the were outstanding defensively and everyone fought for the cause - 21 blocks, 12 of which were in or around their box!

Was waiting for 10 games for thoughts on David Artell but I have seen enough, he is doing a great job. I certainly do not expect to win every week but to not be looking towards the bottom of the league and to have been competitive in all of the games is enough for me fantastic performance tonight, got some pride back in the team and the recruitment looks way better. Looking forward to the weekend but even if we slip up there will be no criticism from me. This has been a start that has way exceeded my expectations and particularly with all of the injuries. A great night for the Mariners. Utm

I think that is a bit unfair. In real time you have to go with what you see, otherwise we may as well just comment after the 46 games have been played.
None of us expected this turnaround in both results and performances (although we all hoped) of individuals and the team.
Fans of other clubs all over the country will bemoaning their club tonight because of what they have seen but they will change their minds later in some cases.

You don't have to. You can say you've not seen enough of a player, but writing a player off after a handful of games is just
excrement, and probably doesn't help with their confidence when they inevitably read the criticism. Some people like to look really clever calling players "competition winners", but these are young kids that train day in day out and have to perform their job in front of thousands. They will all have talent, it's just whether that translates to mens football and playing under pressure. Piling on more pressure actually causes more of an issue in terms of a player establishing themselves.
In terms of expecting a turnaround, I was one of the few here who said DA would turn it around when everyone was calling for him to be out. I don't forget positives, even when I see negatives. I can weigh up positives, and negatives and get a feel whether things have the potential to improve.
Justifying knee jerk twitter reactions because other fans do it isn't good. It's weak and hiding behind others.

When you have been watching football as long as we have (if you are indeed ancient) then you will know it is the case and will always be the case. I've done it myself loads of times - I famously said Kevin Drinkell would never make it as a pro, but I've also seen things in players who were disliked but came good. It is what it is as they say.

Just watched the Gills fans highlight of the game on You Tube, very complementary. Said our game management was excellent and we deserved to win. A fair assessment.

I think it was at scunny away ( it was the night of the infamous Laws wife chant) I said to my mates Rob Jones is the worst player I’d ever seen in a town shirt. How wrong I was .
Gary Jones was also much maligned when he first played for us .
I think Greeny will also be one of those players who will change fans opinions.
I’ve also criticised Hume , who up until the last few games has looked awful in my opinion . However I’ll quite happily eat a big dose of humble pie when proven wrong. If we finish top half I’d applaud Artell if he moonwalks round Blundell Park giving the finger to all the doubters like myself !
What a difference a few weeks and a bit of confidence makes. Long may it continue .

Opposition fans moaning about Artells behaviour on the sidelines, moaning about our dirty tactics in the 2nd half , moaning that their precious team shouldn’t be losing to the likes of Grimsby….
Love it , absolutely love it . I want us to be feared and hated in equal measures lol

Just saying to the Mrs we’re developing a bit of an edge & our housery levels are going up nicely, I like it, we’ve been too soft for ages. When you think of the money they’ve spent they’re right they shouldn’t be losing to us at home on a Tuesday night but at our level (unlike the prem) football doesn’t work that way, thank god.

If you're slowing the game down and wasting time, it's up to the referee to get it under control. We've seen it at BP against us many a time and few referees are brave enough to nip it in the bud. If you get the chance to ease a bit of pressure, it only makes sense to take it. We're not the sort of team to roll around feigning injury from what I've seen and I'm assuming that Smith really did have something in his eye as he was waving the second the ball was cleared after that corner. Probably had something in his eye.
The ref did add 7 minutes, so I don't think they can complain too much.
Posted by: mike_d, October 2, 2024, 8:25am; Reply: 171
There was a point when one of the Gills players threw one of our players to the ground behind the refs back because they were stalling a free kick, which shows our housery but also begs how that wasn't penalised. We seemed to expect and cope with their physical frustrations.
