Artell obviously still has time to try and get things right but people are understandably jittery after the sh*tshow last season. He needs to make some further signings and pronto. No flipping around with kids like Obikwu and Harry Wood. We need proper players who are ready to play men’s football.

Most fans think that he should of gone after the Donny game.
But we gave him a chance but in the closed season Pete Wild became a free agent unbelievably after an epic job at Barrow.
Surely we must make a
move on him, in your heart of hearts we all know Artell is not going to do it he had his chance and failed on epic style.
Pete Wild will be snapped up by another team soon these chances do not come along often.

He’s going to get the start of the season so there’s no point banding names around. But he’s walking on very thin ice with the mass of the fans , there’s no denying it . A bad start and he’s gone .

Wild would be an excellent appointment to be fair, but it's Artells to lose at the moment.

Wild's record in League 2 is 1.45 points per game.
Artell's record in League 2 is 1.40 points per game.
Wild has won Manager of the Month in League Two.
Artell has won promotion from League Two.
Just saying.

I’ll make this really simple for you.
We made a lot of cash out of the FA Cup run. The owners let Hurst blow it and there’s fkall left.

Just looking at Artell's time in Crewe (His first-ever senior managerial position)
16/17 Took over In January, finished the season 17th
17/18 Finished 15th
18/19 Finished 12th
19/20 Took Crewe Up, He was top of the league when Covid stopped play and only didn't keep the position because of points per game handing it to Sindon instead.
21/22 Took Crewe to 12th their highest league position since 2005 when they were in the Championship
22/23 Was sacked after all his assets had finally been sold off over the course of two seasons and he had been forced to try and pick up players on the cheap (this is the view of a couple of Crewe supporting mates).
If Artell can do the same again I'd be pretty happy. He's kept us up, next is steady improvement.

What happy clappers?
Said in another post, there aren’t any fans to my knowledge that are Artell disciples or happy clappers or however you want to coin it , I don’t think Town has happy clapper fans at all, we are measured in how quick we lose our excrement, and right now that’s those who are panicking over friendlies and those who will make judgement over the next few weeks once the transfer window shuts.
Artell hasn’t been popular since Day 1 and I don’t think managing to keep is up really put any varnish on him. He’ll be up against it from the first minute this season, he’s done nothing to earn any loyalty or favour from the fanbase, and the jury will be out on him unless we end up flying out the blocks and maintaining good form.
He doesn’t have the luxury of what other managers have had in pre
-season where there have been proportions of the fan base who are strongly in support of his methods.

He has no goodwill because everybody could see that the style he was trying to implement didn't work as we got hammered on a regular basis.

A few negative posters on the Fishy is hardly 'the mass of fans' unless you have proof otherwise?

I have some goodwill towards him, he came in and tried to do what he thought was right and has since admitted it wasn’t the right time to try and land so much change. Add to that he changed the approach & results improved.
He’s clearly hard working, has time for people & unlike his predecessor has taken time to engage with some local stuff.
David Artell is working within the confines of a club for whatever reason doesn’t have much money to work with and also had to deal with some challenging off field stuff that nobody would want to see again.
Artell wants the same as us, Town to win games & play well.

I tend to agree with this. Artell probably needs this job to go well as much as we do.
I’m still, in case you hadn’t realised, sceptical about owners involving themselves in playing style unless they unequivocally back the manager with the funds needed.
I have no problem with the idea that the club isn’t the basket case that it was under Fenty but I don’t see how you get rid of all of that in such a relatively short time span. In addition, we’ve also got a fan base that is fearful of another trip to non league which would be catastrophic.

Should just be simple mathematics really but how a Club with an average gate of over 5.5k can consistently struggle to finish above teams with around half that figure is truly baffling?
My point here is people are questioning the budget when given the last 3 Seasons ST sales versus the 10-15 years previous we SHOULD be far more competitive. A good solid start and all negative thoughts will disappear ultimately its what happens on the field most fans care about.

Can’t we find a manager who can have instant success and maybe get us promoted straight away instead?
Like Steve Evans at Stevenage. Like Scott Lindsey at Crawley. Like Derek Adams did at Morecambe.

Stevenage had cash to burn
Crawley had cash to burn after a horrific season
Morecombe is the only team of the 3 I believe that didn't just splash the cash.
The way our owners have been larking on Hurst burnt ours but took us the wrong way down the league. Artell is working on a tight budget by the sounds of things

Anyone who thinks there’s even the vaguest, tiny chance that the owners would sack and change managers in pre-season needs to get a fat dose of reality.

Yes, because it happens all the time. The fact you can actually name those that have achieved it is because that rarely happens.

The owners sought Artell and they backed him through a really rocky spell. They're backing him again in what is his first summer transfer window.
He isn't going anywhere unless it becomes very clear we're in relegation trouble. Even if we find ourselves, say, 17th in November, he'll remain in post. I can't see them sacking him unless performances are generally worrying and defeats are really heavy.
He's our manager and no matter what you think of him you have to back him because anything else is just counter-productive. Not saying you aren't allowed an opinion, but come match day we have to get behind him and the players.

It all depends on the style of football we are trying to play. I think he's in big trouble with the board the second he goes pragmatic. If we are 17th but playing it out from the back, I think that the board will try and tolerate that.

However, I’d almost guarantee it won’t be Grimsby Town.

The only style of football I'm concerned with seeing us play is whatever style it takes for our 4th division team to regularly score more goals than the other 4th division teams we have to play against. To do it in style would be lovely, but getting it done on a regular basis is more important. Am I wrong?

And now everyone’s threatening to off themselves over the transfer business (despite the 7 we’ve brought in looking decent acquisitions). It probably bodes well…

That's exciting football to me. Some will probably disagree but I enjoyed Slade Mk I in 05/06. A clear game plan, organised and the closest we've come to getting promoted from this division since ending up here in 2004.

The problem was that Sladeball became about nothing more than percentages, the more the season progressed. Endlessly twatting the ball into the opposition box for your 6'7" central defenders to attack was somewhat limited, especially as we'd played some quick, attacking football at other stages of the season. Obviously, Reddy's struggle for fitness was a big issue, as was the signing of Junior Mendes who blocked more of our shots on target than he managed himself. The odd one was that Woodhouse was theoretically a very capable footballer at that level, but he didn't do a great deal more than take the free-kicks that I can recall. By that stage, I think Slade was only coaching them for the route one style. We actually regressed as the season went on rather than improving. The team's failure to turn up in the play-off final didn't surprise me at all, and we know that Slade was already on his way by then.

It helped that we had some of the best players we’ve had at this level in the last 25 years but I agree. When working it was exciting. The pace of Reddy and Cohen and the brains of Gary Jones, delightful. Problem was it was turgid when not going well. But I’d kill to have some genuine pace in the team again.
